First, let me state that I joined Private Workout in March of 2013. I trained with Sharon, Al, Patrick (not the owner but a new guy who quit) and Stephen in the 5 months I used a trainer. I purchased a total of 2 of the 3 month trainer sessions for twice a week for around $500 + the Protein Drink package.
So let’s start with the basic concept and the positive of the PW experience.
You have separate rooms with a machine in each room. You are given a sheet with your weights and reps and you take that to each room. There is a voice that comes on and says ‘Go Go Go’ and that prompts you to switch rooms/machines. I am thinking it is 100 seconds. The whole workout takes about 25 min. and does work a lot of your muscles. So if you are looking to workout in private and for a quick workout it does give you that. Now when in the room you do 3 weights; say 18 at 120, 6 at 200 and until you hear prompt 40 (this is an example of what is done in each room). And NO THIS IS NOT A BOOTCAMP!
Now for the downside. There is a LARGE turn over with trainers. There is high pressure to buy into the membership (as with most places like this). The staff is not all qualified or do they fully understand the importance of certain things given different medical issues. The staff is not friendly for the most part. The machines are not cleaned in-between each person; there is no time and I question if the cardio machines are ever cleaned as there was a tissue in the cup holder for over a week (I put a blue mark on it to see how long it took).
So I know you are wondering did I see results. Well I went 3 times (2 times with trainer and once on my own) a week for the most part, I ate healthy, drank their protein drink, I did cardio, I did the pw workout, I talked with my trainer/manager/doctor and are you ready my percentage of body fat went up as did my pounds and clothing size. Now I am not saying that I am like everyone else. Let’s go back to the staff does not understand medical issues and the program does not allow for flexibility in the workout to truly be tailored to each individual person.
I also suffered 2 injuries while working out there. A calf strain and another strain. All happened because the ‘heavy’ was too much.
So why did I buy a second 3 month package and protein drink after no real results. Because my trainer Stephen made some changes to what I was doing (ageist what the program is) and I thought I would give it another 3 month try. Well he left Private Workout and at that point I decided to not do another trainer (turns out they had another girl trainer for about a week that was more like a cheerleader and not a trainer; again not qualified). I requested a refund on my unused drinks and I was told that even though I was not going to do my trainer sessions I could still collect my drinks after a workout. Well they owe me 9 because I just could no longer deal with the mood at the gym.
Now I am not saying the concept is not great. It works for many but I personally talked to 8 people that were much like me. Now I can’t say that those people were not hitting the drive thru or whatever I just know that I was doing what I could for the program to work.
Since not returning to PW I have had fabulous results and the only change was the gym I go too and the way my weights are done.
Went to retrieve my workout sheets to show proof of my 100 workouts in order to cancel without being charged the $199 cancellation fee. The owner, Patrick Kerwin, and the Plano mgr, Sharon, lost half of my sheets. The owner screamed at me, chastised me saying I was the only person who ever had trouble cancelling, threatened to sue me for slander, and kicked me out. All while I was holding my 14mo old baby! He even chased me out into the parking lot where he yelled out to me to, "Look in the mirror." Wondering if that was supposed to be an insult, I asked him what that was supposed to mean and he only repeated himself. He also screamed that I came to the gym today "to start trouble." I actually just came to get my workout sheets and cancel my membership of 3 years! No one should have to go through what I went through today.
Make sure they explain all the terms of the contract and read it thourougly before signing. I originally bought a Groupon for $29 Six week Bootcamp . Owner convinced me to trade it for a membership where I was to pay $29 per month until I completed 100 workouts. After I completed 100, monthly membership would be free. Well I called to cancel and they charged my account $215 because they said I "borrowed" the $199 initial membership fee and since I didn't complete the 100 workouts, I owe them. I liked the concept, just didn't understand the terms of the agreement. Would have kept the six week bootcamp and never signed up for a membership.
Just loved the quickness and efficiency of the workout. Was in and out the door within 30 minutes and I could tell I had worked out! Already lost 5 pounds in just 2 weeks
The gym was always clean. I enjoyed the quick focused workout that got me in and out in 30 minutes with a complete body workout. The music was awesome to workout to.
The privacy was amazing! Each and every circuit performed is so effective!
I liked the variety of exercises that keep things exciting. I really liked the focus on building muscle!
The personal trainer that worked with me is knowledgeable about nutrition & health. She put a lot of perspective on how to work out properly.
