Bad Experience – We ate on the patio, it took a long time to be waited on, waiters need to go through the restaurant, walk on the sidewalk just to get to the patio to serve. We sat by smokers, when asked the waiter to ask them not to since we could not move and there was no designated smoking area, the waiter blamed us so they made comments and gave us dirty looks. We should have left then. The food was ok, not worth waiting for.
Give it another try! – My husband and I went here on a Saturday early evening this summer and were so surprised at how good it was. I love Mexican food, and I loved this place and it's food. We sat on the back patio, that had a lot of character, the waitress was wonderful- very attentive and the food was SO GOOD. HUGE portions, and I finished every last bite. I hope it sticks around for a long time, because it's different and different is very good!
Not authentic Mexican at all. – We tried Nacho Mamas this evening for the first time (and last). We sat out on the patio, which was nice, but the waitress kept forgetting about us. 3 different people told us that they would bring us chips and salsa, but no one brought them until our food came and we asked for them. The entrees are huge, but the flavor is strange. The beans taste like hormel canned chili beans, the chips and salsa were the worst I ever had, the tacos were only okay, but not worth going back for. A very disappointing experience. Very slow, inattentive service, and blah food. We will not go back. For great Mexican food, go to La Cocinita in Bayport. The food there is authentic Mexican, I especially love the chicken enchiladas with red sauce, and their refried beans, rice, chips and salsa are great as well.
We won't go back – We visited Nacho Mamas on a Saturday evening around 7pm, so it was bound to be quite busy, as Stillwater always is in the summer. This restaurant has very little square footage and the tables were small and very close together. The chips & salsa brought before the meal were good, though we had to ask for water after 10 minutes or so. The entree portions were HUGE, but overpriced for this type of food. We eat Mexican food all the time, but didn't care for it here. I had a cimichanga that was too salty (our waitress even agreed it was salty). My husband had some type of steak sandwich which he disliked because the bread tasted strange. The drinks were just okay. The waitstaff seemed friendly, but rushed, and thus somewhat inattentive.
Also, Nacho Mama's had a coupon published in the Happenings Book which stated it was "valid anytime," but they had a sign posted on their restaurant door retracting that and refusing to honor the coupon on the weekends. Not cool; they should have stuck to their decision they made when they first listed the coupon.
Disappointment – If you are looking for freshly prepared authentic Mexican food this is not the place for you. Nothing tasted homemade or fresh for that matter. The chips tasted like salted cardboard and the beans tasted "fresh" from the can. The fish tacos are from a package- Our server told us that they couldn't be ordered ala carte because of the package they come in. My ala carte taco with a side of beans was $11. A ridiculous price for less than mediocre food. As a Stillwater resident I will make the drive to St. Paul (El Burrito) for delicious Mexican food.
OK Mexican food, but nothing special. – Hope they pack folks on the outdoor bar during the summer because with the sparse crowd they had on a January Saturday evening, they won't for long be able to afford Stillwater rent rates. There were plenty of empty tables on the Saturday night that my wife suggested we try Nacho Mamas. We were surprised how small the place is. There is no bar to camp out at. Service was prompt and courteous, however the waiter was incapable of offering an opinion. We were given a never empty basket of decent chips and some very good smooth salsa to munch on while we enjoyed our also decent house Margaritas. Our food servings were huge. I got the Stacked Enchiladas (pork) and my wife, the Smothered Burrito (beef). The Enchiladas were the typical bland Mexican food taste. Not bad, just nothing special. The Smothered Burrito had more taste. I guess avoid the pork? Prices were ~$13 per entree.
I see no reason to come back, especially with La Cosinita just a few miles south in Bayport
