great food,i definitly will go back! – this is the best sushi i ever had,the service is good,and it's not expansive for students.i like it,next time i will take my friends there!
Change in staff has made the service worse. – First of all, the food is good and the portions are generous. The restaurant is also clean and a nice place to sit down. However, the service has gone downhill a great deal.
They used to have a friendly young man and young lady who would take your orders over the phone, or show you to your table. Those two people are currently gone, and have been gone since summer '08. Right now they have a middle-aged crazy lady who doesn't understand English very well and is almost always unfriendly. She must be related to the owner, or work for nothing, because I don't know why they are keeping her. She's also VERY slow, not very bright, and she is easily swamped.
Also, never say "Is it too early to order?", all she hears is "I want two of the following...". Don't use words that sound like numbers. (Even though she answered the question "No" on the phone, the order still managed to double... who knows...)
No longer support them - Rude & Disrespectful! – SHORT VERSION: Good sushi, terrible service. Rude, deceitful and possibly discriminating. I have been disrespected by them several times.
LONG VERSION: I was thrilled to find a place that delivered sushi at such late hours within such a close proximity. My first orders went great, but the third time a woman told me they didn't deliver to my address. Mind you, I live near Buford & N. Druid Hills -less than 15 mins away so I ask why and she gets upset and hangs up. I call back and she repeats that they don't deliver (according to her "owner" ... but when I asked to speak to him/her she said she was the "owner"). She then hung up on me again. I call a third time to make a formal complaint and she says she can deliver but it's a $5 charge. Again, I attempt to explain that I had ordered before just fine and she begins yelling and hangs up again. I was so upset!!
So I did an experiment - I called back from another number and switched my to sound like a giggly valley girl. I use my apartment address (which is different from the complex's) and they take my order with NO issues and NO extra charge. I did this several times with no questions asked.
The last time I ordered from them it took them forever to come and they were again rude on the phone. So I tipped the minimum (15%). After paying, the delivery man angrily yells at me to not call anymore if I am only going to give him a "low tip". I believe I was maybe...10, 20 cents below 15% and I was shocked. Especially since I had generously tipped before. So to see if they would shun me again, I called gave my name and address and was told "We are not delivering at this time" and was hung up on, AGAIN.
I couldn't make this up if I tried. I had to share my experience in hopes that others will not support a company that treats their paying customers this way. It is extremely unacceptable and I have been really upset about this as you can tell from my extremely long, but passionate post LOL. Thanks for reading.
Terrible service – A friend bought me a gift certificate to this restaurant a couple of years ago. When I moved, the gift certificates were misplaced, so when I found them recently, I was pleased to find that there was no expiration date. I went to the restaurant (the food was decent), and when I submitted the gift certificate, was forced to wait at my table for 15 minutes while the server called the owner, and he drove to the restaurant. When the owner arrived, he went into the kitchen for another five minutes, so we asked the server when we would be able to leave. She told us we would have to speak to the owner about that, so we asked that she go get him. When the owner came back, he informed us that he was waiting for the other owner to return his call. When she did call, he again went back into the kitchen, without saying a word to us. At that point, we had been waiting for over 25 minutes, and, with no end in sight, we left. The owner ran out into the parking lot after us and accused us (in front of several people) of creating fraudulent gift certificates, because the restaurant has changed ownership in the last year, and his current gift certificates look different than the one my friend purchased. Despite the fact that I explained how old the gift certificate was, and it had a registration number, and the signature of the previous owner/manager, he insisted that it was fake. I have never been in such a ridiculous situation, and would definitely NOT recommend this restaurant. The food isn't even close to being good enough to make up for the terrible service and embarrassment I experienced.
Great service, great food – I went with my friend to Yami Sushi for the first time on a Thursday night, and the atmosphere was very low-key and relaxed. The service is great - friendly and quick. The portions are pretty big. My friend and I shared a Dragon Roll and a Crispy and Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Dragon Roll was okay, but the Crispy and Spicy Tuna was really amazing - one of the best sushi I've tried (and I love sushi and eat it quite a bit). My friend got the teriyaki chicken (which she said was good), and I got the tempura udon (which was also pretty good). All in all, I would recommend this place.
Absoutely unbelievable portions, quality average – I have never in my life seen a sushi restaurant anywhere in the country that can provide portions like Yami Sushi's at a very, very reasonable price. For example, the Sashimi Appetizer could honestly be an entire meal, as the pieces of fish are twice or three times as large as anywhere else in Atlanta. Likewise, the fried rolls that are five pieces of sushi (such as the tuna crunch) are meals in themselves. I could not finish mine. The downside is, at least in the experience of my wife and me on a Friday evening, that the quality was lacking compared to other Atlanta sushi. The sashimi was tough and the tuna crunch tried to be a gourmet dish but fell way short in breading and texture. On the other hand, a (non-sushi) asparagus tempura appetizer was enjoyable. Perhaps there was a new sushi chef on the night we visited, but I would urge you to bring a big appetite and try various simpler dishes to test the quality first.
Great service, great sushi! – I have visited Yami Sushi many, many times and have never been disappointed. The sushi was always fresh, the staff was always kind and friendly. The Rainbow Roll, the Atlanta Roll, and the Volcano Roll were three of my favorites.
I moved to New Jersey in May of 2007, and have yet to find anything like Yami Sushi. I miss it!
Really great food and staff – We have eaten here once a week since discovering this gem. After trying several restaurants in the area and finding them horrid, we tried Yami Sushi. Although we're not big sushi people, we do love other dishes, like teriyaki chicken (my partner) and hibachi tofu and vegetable udon.
We have found the service to be quick and friendly, and the food to be really delightful. They are wonderful about special orders. Really nice place, and I'd recommend it to anybody!
great sushi, terrible service – I've tried alot of sushi restaurants in Atlanta and Yami definitely is one of my top picks for freshness. Their sushi menu and combinations are very unique and the best part is you can create your own sushi roll! Whatever type of fish you want in a roll, they will make it for you. The prices aren't expensive at all- you won't pay more than $10 for 8 HUGE rolls of sushi. Their crab stick tempura is the best I've ever tasted!!! It's real crab not some imitation crab. And their ginger salads are to die for- the best ginger dressing ever, tomatoes and cucumbers.
But there are definitely some cons.
First of all, their service is TERRIBLE. I'm a regular customer, they already know what I'm going to order when I walk in and on more than one occasion I waited 45 minutes before getting my sushi. AND THERE WERE NO OTHER CUSTOMERS IN THERE! They put delivery and take out orders before their in-store customers, and when you ask whats taking so long they are quick to be rude. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt by going again but every time their services fails. Also, their "hibachi" hardly tastes like hibachi, its not even spelled right on the menu and you cant see the grill, its in the kitchen so who knows if its really hibachi or what. It doesnt taste good at all!
Great location for Emory students/Decatur residents. Don't waste your time eating there, just order it to go. Don't knock it all together because it is DEFINITELY some of the freshest sushi I've had.
terible food – oh my god.the teriyaki was terible, eggroll was grisy,the place was smelling very bad.i will never go to that place again.
