New owners, great wings!!! – My girlfriend and I just went out to O'Dwyer's after learning that the old owner had recently sold the bar. I noticed a great improvement in service and we had a real fun time. Nice to have a local place to go again to get a beer and some good wings.
I have another place to go... – It's called (familiar to most) Tir Na Nog--218 S. Blount, downtown Raleigh. Because.....O'Dwyer's is one of the hugest disappointments since I've lived here (5 years). I went when they first opened and although the food was not much to write home about, especially considering they call themselves an "Irish Pub", but they were friendly, and the food came fairly quick. On THAT day, I would have given it maybe 2&1/2 stars. Fast forward to Feb. 2007, I brough my parents who have never been to NC, my Dad likes beer, Mom's part Irish, and it's close to my home. BOY was that a disaster!! Apparently you have to pay upfront for anyone to smile and be curtious, it took 5 minutes (this is 3pm) just to get our drink orders in, 10 minutes later we order food, 40 mintes later it comes, we took a couple bites and asked for doggy bags. It wasn't the worst, but my 8 fingered Uncle could've drummed up a better nosh!! The food was better when we reheated the next day adding some of our own finishing touches. The kicker----My father is obviously not a youing man, has trouble hearing, and needs glasses. When we were getting ready to leave, standing, he went to grab his beer (his third) to take the last drink, and a waitress (not ours) walked by and took it out of his hand and said "OK, I'll take that". My Dad said "I'm not done", she said, "Sorry, think 'ya are". My Dad being a proud and sweet gentleman didn't say a word, but he swiped his tip off the table and I didn't blame him one damn bit.
Sorry so long but I just had to vent about this horrible place. Please let us know when it changes hands!
Under new management – I frequent O'Dwyers on a regular and up until around November of last year, I had to agree with all the reviews written, The male bartender was RUDE at best and the owner is a little grumpy. However, they must of finally wised up and fired all of their rude staff members and figured out how to train servers correctly. I have been told that they completely changed their management team and the new managers seem to really have their stuff together. The food is consistently good and the service is very friendly and efficient. If there ever is a problem, you can talk to any one of the three managers and they will always more than fix the problem. They still have live bands on Saturdays and DJ on Fridays, also they have hospitality nights on Sunday and Monday and ladies night on Tuesdays. They really have turned things around! I am so impressed with the new changes and will continue to spend all my money at O'Dwyers.
Poor Excuse for an Irish Pub – I would not recommend going to O'Dwyers Irish Sports Pub, lets look at that word "Irish" Is O'Dwyers an Irish sports pub? In my opinion NO a big HELL NO, this place doesn't even serve Shepherd's pie an a regular basis, when they do it's only on THURSDAY, that's if your lucky enough that the mexican chef showed up for work without a hangover and the slop they serve as Shepherd's pie at the very least would be considered a poor excuse for cottage pie.
I feel the owner of this wantabe "Irish Pub" has a lot to learn about running a restaurant and needs a swift kick in the bullocks by reality as I'm sure it is long over due, SOMEONE PLEASE CALL Gordon Ramsay because this place would surely make Kitchen Nightmares.
Staff are under trained and just plane rude and I can see why if you have ever met the owner you would reply "what do you expect", what a low grade bunch of misfits trying to pass of as an Irish Pub, just gives you a sick feeling deep down inside knowing that customers are getting the wool pulled over their eyes every time they step foot in the doors of O'Dwyers Irish Sports Pub.
My advice is to take the time and travel the distance to a real "Irish Pub" and try an authentic Irish dish, trust me it will be well worth the drive into Raleigh.
O'Dwyers Irish Sports Pub good luck to ya ratbastards as I don't see you guys being around much longer.
I go here at least weekly, more often twice a week. I usually love this place. The food is fantastic. Usually the service is a little slow but the food and attitude makes up for it. Tonight was the worst!! We waited 45 minutes for our food, had to go to the bar for drink refills 3 times and when the food finally arrived it was wrong and there was no dipping sauces or condiments for the burgers. We waited another 15 minutes before the waitress came and asked us if we wanted anything else and when we told her condiments for the burgers and sauces for our sides she rolled her eyes and walked off. She brought some condiments and sauces to the table but she tossed them onto the table and walked off. At this time I was ready to leave and just wanted my check. She finally returned and she was annoyed that we wanted to pay and leave. I finished my food at home and it tasted great. Maybe this would be good for take out from now on but I don't even feel comfortable walking through the front door after this experience. FYI I'm sad about that because I really loved this place. If the chef ever leaves he should advertise that he worked here because his food is fantastic and I would follow the food, NEVER THE SERVICE!!!
O'dwyers the new? – I recently gave O'dwyers a second chance and was quite suprised, it was alot less smoky the new staff was very friendly I would deff say to do O'Dwyers
Enjoy yourself here! – This sports bar is one of the last remaining great places to kick back, have a great time, do some dancing, listen to some awesome bands, eat good food, have service with a smile & a laugh or two, and best of all, light up a smoke! Highly recommend for having a good ole' time, ya just don't find that much anywhere, anymore!
Gets worse everytime I go there – I have been going to this place for months and it gets worse every time I am there. I am done with it.
If you are interested in a restaurant where you can go hungry, or a bar where you can go thirsty then this is your place. All the regular patrons talk about the lousy service, so its no secret. Everyone just rolls their eyes. You have to ask for everything twice here if you really want it.
They finally got rid of the mean nasty waitress only to replace her with incompetent wait staff. The last two visits I put in my food order and never got my food. No kidding, the girl waitress did not even put in my sandwich order last week and this week the guy did not put in my order either. They check the computer and its not even in there.
I have seen people sit with empty glasses for over an hour without even the offer for a refill from a waitress. I saw a the waitress talk to a guy with an empty glass in front of him for over a minute and walk away without offering to get him a drink!
The food is not particularly good, the evening staff is incompetent and the service is just plain lousy. Forget this place exists.
Smokey air/great food – I loved the food but was miserable due to the poor ventilation system. There is no such thing as a non-smoking area in this
restaurant. They should get a better system so non-smokers don't have to suffer as they enjoy the food.
RUDE AND NASTY OWNER – I will drive further for a REAL pub. This place will not be getting any business from my family and friends.
My kid was having an 'emergency' and need to use a bathroom. The staff refused to let my daughter use theirs - they were insolent, nasty and treated my wife like she was going to rob the place (if I had been there, I would have tried to get my kid to go on their floor, just for kicks). I understand not wanting the general public to use your restrooms but there is no reason to be rude and nasty about it. There aren't many stores in their little stripmall so I doubt they have a large problem with people trying to use their restrooms. Apparently, they feel it is more important to keep potential patrons out of their restrooms and GUARANTEE no future business than it is to show some good will to a neighbor. NOT a good business decision by a neighborhood pub. There are too many EXCELLENT Irish pubs in the area to waste your time with these rude idiots.
I eagerly await their demise (and, by the sound of the other reviews, it won't be long) so I can stand in the parking lot and applaud their departure. Hopefully, someone with some class will use this excellent location for a real neighborhood pub. Hey O'Dwyers, you asked for the karma that's coming your way, deal with it!
