Amaka's International is great salon. The staff is always courteous and helpful. They always are up-to-date with all the latest styles and information on how to maintain healthy hair. Not only hair services they offer spa services from massages to mani/pedi services. This is the ultimate salon. You can leave the salon with a fresh new do and relaxed. I recommend this salon.
They seem nice and try to be professional, but overly confident and I'm not impressed. Hair looked okay, but had to rewash it because ends were brittle after shampoo & style. Called owner to express my disappointment and she told me that I would have to pay again, but will give me a discount..wtf?? I argued that I could do my own hair free, with better results. Then she informed me that the original tech (Brittney) would have to do my hair. She gave me excuses as to why my hair was brittle, and I have been doing my hair forever and it never was it brittle on the ends after a fresh relaxer, and yes I used a treatment. Said she would have receptionist call me back to set up a time for her to redo my hair. Like I said, it wasn't horrible looking she actually did it real cute, but after wrapping it i noticed how dry the ends were. Don't care about getting my hair redone, I'll just take this as a lost and go some where else. Do not recommend.
Worst natural hair experience EVER!!!
Stylist name: Ariel or Aurielle.
She arrived 15 minutes late and didn't apologize. Didn't section my 4c hair during shampoo/condition/blowout process. At home, I section in twist to make my washing process easier. She left me at the dryer for 20+ minutes after the machine cut off to do another client (didn't acknowledge or apologize then). Only added a couple spritz of heat serum and did NOT detangle my hair before the blowout (for naturals that's a NO! NO!). 5 minutes into the blowout I voiced my concerns, and must've upset her because she left for at least 15 minutes without telling me, and came back talking on the cell phone. I asked for a salon manager. One never showed up. Once the stylist returned I told her I no longer needed her services, and clearly there were too many distractions for her to complete my hair. So I left the salon with my hair unfinished.
NOT THE WORST PART!!! The kicker…another stylist scolded a lil girl (during a shampoo) for not informing her that she was suppose to receive a relaxer (the mother or receptionist’s job, not the child). It was too late b/c her hair was already wet. The little girl seemed shy, scared, non talkative but clearly it wasn’t her fault. My stylist told the other stylist doing the child’s hair that it would be fine placing a relaxer on for a short time on the wet hair. O_o I’m not sure whose child was being serviced there on 8/22/12, but I hope her hair turned out okay. I will not return to this salon.
I've had natural hair for over 12 years now. The silk press done at Amaka's (chemical free flat ironing) is AMAZING! My hair is always so light and, well, silky! I have never had my hair look this way from other places or even from doing it myself. The owner (Dedra) has mastered this technique and passed it on to her other employees. The prices are great, especially for the outcome. I have never had them try and press me to get any type of treatment that I didn't request. As a matter of fact, there is a sign that states that you can't add more services to your appointment so as to keep the stylist on schedule for all customers. I've never experienced the "up-sale" mentioned in the other review. This is now the only salon I allow to touch my hair. When I'm around and about in town I can actually look at people's hair and tell that they had the silk press from Amaka's! It's THAT distinctive! Go get it and you won't regret it!
Don't waste your money. This salon is "tricking" clients to come there and patronize them through Groupon deals and then when you get in they try to "upsell" you on what you really need. Who the heck "upsells" on getting your hair STYLED for an extra charge? Would you go to the hairdresser and NOT get your hair styled as part of the service. Poor a$$ service, and false advertisement. There are MUCH better salons in the area that cost far less, patronize Amaka at your own risk.
This Salon is very innovative! They have a very relaxing motif. The staff is very friendly and efficient. In dealing with natural hair, it takes time and patience to give us clients the ultimate experience and outcome. I've been coming to this salon for years and the owner is very knowledgeable of natural and healthy hair. She makes sure her staff is very knowledgeable as well. Not all clients will be please as at times I've witnessed some who come in already having a bad day and would take their frustrations out on everyone, i've also witnessed clients who choose styles that aren't realistic for their length or hair type. Amaka's Stylist and staff work hard to please everyone who walks in the door. A year ago the owner had a vision of making the salon name a reality "international "...she wanted to be able to service all clients no matter the ethnicity. Companies such as GROUPON and Living Social have helped her to do so. Those were some of her toughest clients, some loved their experience and others complained about small things. The one thing I love about the owner is that she reads reviews and listens to client complaints and tries her best to fix it. I always have to remember myself that not all experiences from one time clients speak for the entire salon and it's mission. Being a minority, a woman, and a small business owner and managing over 6 employees is awesome for someone is a wife and mother of two. This Salon has been striving for over 6years and will continue to be there to service their clients and myself. Experience them for yourself;) I did!
I had a pedicure and leg massage from Natasha and it was terrific. I'll definitely go back for another. She has her own private room with soothing music that prevented us from having to listen to what's going on in the rest of the salon. She starts with a wonderfully soothing foot soak with a variety of oils that soften the feet for the work ahead; this lasts for about 15 minutes and affords one the time to relax. Then she started to work on the pedicure, leg massage and reflexology on the feet and toes. Natasha has strong, able hands and she spent a good hour or more with me. I would recommend her highly. She comes from a corporate background but is now focusing on what she really loves to do. I admire her for that! You should definitely try this and be sure to ask for Natasha.
