As quick as its name implies but well worth the wait. – First off, do not try to eat here if you're on a tight schedule. My fiance and I arrived around 4:45 on a Saturday, April 12th and clearly the place had just filled up. There wasn't much of a line yet, but the bar and all tables were full. I had been warned about this ahead of time and would've been there earlier had it not been for all the freeway construction in the area. Anyway, the hostess said it would be a 30 minute wait minimum. Luckily, within 10 minutes we were able to snag seats at the bar or else we wouldn't have been seated until about 5:45. The bartender was really hustling and, although it was sometimes tough to get her attention, we never felt neglected. It helped that we decided on drinks, appetizers, and meals pretty quick (bartender took the whole order in one stop). The food did not arrive quickly, but when it did, it was hot and fantastic. My fiance wasn't a fan of the split pea & okra fritters (slightly slimy texture inside) but I thought they were great. I ordered the Hoppin' Jack for dinner with mac & cheese and Mom's green beans. He ordered The Big Three combo with mac & cheese and baked beans. Both entrees were delicious. The mac & cheese was served oven-baked in single size casseroles. Both bean sides had a dash of Slow's sauce mixed in (the mustard sauce is great!). Since dinner was so satisfying, we HAD to order dessert (banana pudding) which was probably some of the best I've ever had. We paid and were out the door by 6:30 (by which time it was wall-to-wall people). And did I mention the beer list? Great selection of microbrew. You can find a beer to go with any dish. I will definitely be going back and drag as many people with me as I can.
A New Detroit Mainstay – As a native Michigander studying out of state, I had heard a lot of buzz about this place since it opened. I had numerous family members and friends recommend it to me. Well finally while in town for the holidays and a little vacation afterwards, I stopped by this place with my parents after the Auto Show. It had quite an atmosphere. Trendy and sharp, while still very authentic. Because I'm sure a lot of other people had the idea to get lunch there before/after the Auto Show, it was quite busy and we coult only find immediate seating at the bar (not really a problem, as it was quite spacious). The place smelled great, I was greatly anticipating my meal. I was a little worried that this place would just have a boring, typical barbecue/soul food menu, but I was pleasantly surprised by the balance between culinary classics and risks. Between layering a Black & Tan and pouring Jaeger bombs for other customers, the bartender took our order. We all ordered sandwiches, as it was lunch time. In no time our food had arrived, dispite how packed the place was. I had "The Reason", a pulled pork sandwich dressed in just the right amount of a vinegar-based barbecue sauce, also with some cole slaw and dill pickles all held together by two flavorful slices of Texas toast. My parents got two other sandwiches (I forget which ones) that I also tried, and were very good. In addition to our sandwiches, we each got different sides and shared them all: baked beans, cole slaw, and mac and cheese, all of which were excellent. My favorite was the baked beans with peppers and a sort of mustard taste. All in all, this was a great meal, well priced, and quite an experience. This has become one of my favorite restaurants in just one visit! I plan to return everytime I am back in town.
Awesome ... even for non-carnivores! – Wow! Not only does this place have a great vibe, it also has actual vegetarian options - that's right, at a Barbecue joint! Okra and sweet pea fritters are to die for, the "genius" sandwich is literally a work of genius (none of my fellow diners guessed it was vegetarian), the mac and cheese and sweet potato dishes were top notch, and the desserts were excellent. My carnivorous friends really liked their meals, as well. While I agree that service was slow (though not the worst I've ever had), the food and atmosphere were so great I'll go back again and again.
WORST SERVICE EVER!!! – The food is pretty good, but even if this was the best bbq I'd ever eaten in my entire life you could NEVER get me to go back to this place. I have never been treated so rudely in all my life. All I have to say is nice people skills Slows' employees. Your mothers would be so proud.
Pretty good bbq – Slows is a pretty good restaurant. I can't say that they have the best bbq in town, but it's pretty good. The atmosphere is fun and the bar is great. It's a great place to go after work or if you are in the mood for bbq.The customer service is pretty good also.
Great food, drinks, astmosphere and service. – Slow's is the best kept secret on Michigan Ave.
The food is great, the bar is usually stocked and there are always smiling faces.
I've been going there for over a year now.
Always call to see how long the wait is.
