Great food & great service – My group of friends goes out once a month, to a new place. We pick some place we have never been. This location and the atmosphere was very nice. Very cozy.

The food was amazing! Great flavors.....

I will say the only bad thing, is the later in the evening, they run out of fish and lobster. So if you want a lobster, apparently you have to reserve one.

All in all...would eat there again

A great hang out in a fun neighborhood – My husband and I have been to Max Gill & Grill several times. First, if you want seafood, or rather, if you want fish, go Mon.-Friday. This is true of most seafood restaurants. Having read several of the reviews, I wonder what day of the week they went. Keep in mind this is Denver. Fresh seafood is hard to come by let alone on a weekend.

'One of the best times to go to Max Gill and Grill is early on a Sunday evening. If you go before 6pm, it is happy hour and the appetizers and drinks are discounted. The reason to go on Sunday is the Prime Rib special which is excellent. You get a 10 oz. cut with mashed potatoes for $10 or a 16 oz. cut with mashed potatoes for $16. For about $4 or $5 more you can add soup or a salad or something else. Among the appetiezers, we are especially fond of the Carribbean Calimari which includes the unexpected twist of fried baby corn and fried Pepperoncini rings along with the calimari. We've had this several times and have never been disappointed. The steamed old bay shrimp and the

blue crab dip are also good.

They have good specials on a nightly basis which ar worth trying. They also have good bar specials. They serve fairly strong stiff drinks. I had a margarita once that I wasn't impressed with, but some of the other drinks have been quite good. The wine and beer are good.

We've always enjoyed the food, but I did give it a 4 instead of a 5 as the service can be unpredictable. Mostly, it is very good, but once in a while it is slow though we have always found the waitstaff to be quite friendly, and I do know of others who haven't had good service at the bar.

Overall, the menu has a little of something for everyone with a good atmosphere. Expect to pay anywhere from $10-$40 an entree depending on what you get. Definitely try the prime rib.

5280 dinner average – Went to Max Gill & Grill tonight (remember this as the old Hemingways) and the 5280 Specials were below average.

The Calamari was filled with vegetables and very little calamari and the breading was heavy and greasy. The 4 oyster on the half shell option was good and above average.

Ordered their Sole special and I think I saw these wrapped fish pieces either at Costco or Whole Foods.

From the taste, I believe they were from Costco. the asparagas had a good smoky flavor from the grilling and they were cooked perfectly.

The Ahi Sashimi Salad was their chopped salad (very good but boring) with 5 - 1/8" slices of Ahi on it.

Very uninspiring.

Deserts were the Tres Leches (3 milks cake) which was divine and the Key Lime which after having been to the Keys, was flavorless and boxed.

Had a Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc for $45.00 and it was well worth the trip. Great wine at a fair restaurant price.

Overall, there seemed to be no difference between Hemmingways and Max and Grills although I will go there every night but Monday for Happy Hour 3-6 for $1.00 oyster.

If you go here, avoid the 5280 menu and order off the menu. You may get better flavor and excitement that way

Max Gill Kinda a Thrill – While atmosphere and service in any restaurant can vary, I find the "Gill & Grill" to be a great hang-out spot. Right? The drinks are stiff and the food is great. Happy hour sometimes is like a classic dive bar, only safer and cleaner. There's a guy downing oysters and chasing them with beer, a few captivating ladies at the next table (who may or may not want you to buy them a drink) and the proverbial dirty old man...who doesn't love a dirty old man? I've had more fun just having a drink and hitting up tasty happy hour appetizers and quietly sitting at the bar, ominously writing in my notebook and observing the dynamic of a neighborhood pub. Makes me miss home a wee bit, but not enough to leave Denver.

Outside of happy hour, I've taken my love, my lady, my....well, my everything....for quiet dinners there and have never been disappointed. Especially in the Summer, make a reservation for the Tiki/Back Patio area and it's like being on Vacation for a couple of hours.

Ultimately, I really dig this place. You can't be up tight, you have to be open to a fun experience and just be prepared to meet some kind and interesting people. I recommend sitting at the bar or in the bar area for happy hour. Honestly, anywhere for dinner but the back patio is fantastic.

Order the Old Bay Shrimp appetizer, get some oysters (Kumamoto are the best) and my personal favorite, the Oscar Steak (I think that's what it's called) it's a filet mignon with some sort of lump crab sauce over it. Culinary Ecstacy. As far as dessert, I can only imagine they're great but I'vce never made it that far.

Check this place out. Just go blind. No expectations, observe and enjoy the crowd, really focus on the amazing food and drink you enjoy.

If you don't like Max Gill and Grill, don't hate on me. It's just a place I like. Honestly, if you don't like this place, chances are we will never meet of hang out anyhow. However, I do hope that one day we'll have the opportunity to meet at the bar one day, while we enjoy good drinks and friendly company.

Repeated FAILURE on Service – I love the specials that this place runs, & I love the atmosphere, but I have finally had it with this place. Please take the time to read this as I seriously have loved the food & tried repeatedly to put up with the BS service of this place.

For the past two years my friends and I have visited many times and sadly the same horrible service continues each and every time. My friends & I will wait a few months or so to go back, only to get the same horrible service all over again.

Tonight, my friend & I got there & the place wasn't even that busy when we got there. At this time, I had to ask for a drink, & the bartenders didn't even look me in the face to acknowledge me. I actually didn't think they heard me since they were so vague in their acknowledgment. This was the attitude all night. I had to ask for a glass of water 3x, which I requested the minute I asked for my 1st drink. The attitude at this place in the bar is typical to this: very aloof and as if you are wasting the time of the bartenders to be there.

My friend asked what the food specials were, and the bartender, with a very flip attitude said that he had no idea and we'd have to get the specials from the hostess. Later in the night he was real friendly with the ladies next to us in going over all the menu options, all of which he never showed an ounce of gusto towards us about. My friend asked about one item in particular on the regular menu to the other bartender & he very gruffly said, "all of the options are fine." Sorry to tax you and your valuable time about YOUR menu! Also, the places I have worked at, your bartenders are supposed to be your rockstar best service people in the house. If this is the case with Max's - SAD.

We put in an order for an app, which came out with my food - my friend & I would have gladly dealt with the food coming out together, but the app was was the baked crab dip and it was BURNED. One of the bartenders saw us looking at it funny & quickly said, "that is the way it is supposed to be - it's baked." Does BURNED dip seem normal? Even the people sitting next to us said it was ridiculous & to send it back.

I have worked in restaurants & I would have NEVER let my table eat something like this. The bartender could tell it was sub par clearly since he was so quick to make an excuse for it. It was blatantly obvious our app had just been sitting under a heat lamp. My friend & I scraped the top off the dip and ate around it. You couldn't even break the top layer with the knife it was so tough.

The people sitting next to us actually commented that the service on crab night was always "crabby," which I experienced every time I have been to this place.

We ordered a 2nd order of crab legs, which typically only takes 10 or more minutes to come out. I had to delicately ask our bartender if he knew where our order was & he said, "it's really busy and probably coming out soon," and went about his business instead of checking on it. I tried to express that we didn't really want to have to wait longer for it. He did nothing at that moment of us pointing it out.

10 minutes later, we asked the other bartender to cancel our order. He acted COMPLETELY put out that we would ask such a thing & said, "he put your order in." Our order came out during the conversation & he sent it back. The original bartender then goes and gets the order anyhow & makes an issue with us about it say, "I just went to take care of this for you & now you don't want it?" Great to make a scene about it AFTER the other bartender had already handled it.

They thankfully took that off our order, but it doesn't make up for everything else with this place. Even the food couldn't sustain me wanting to eat here ever again. I've always gone back hoping the service would weed itself out, but it hasn't.

They don't give a hoot about their customers – OK - so Max's is a local spot. One would think they would take care of their guests since they are likely to live in the neighborhood and have the potential to be repeat customers - nope. My husband and I went in for dinner one night and wanted to use an AmEx gift card to pay for dinner. Long story short - the idiot server swiped it incorrectly so they told us we needed to use another form of payment and the money would be refunded by AmEx after 24 hours. First of all - what if we didn't have another form of payment? Secondly, it took them a half hour to figure all this out and they didn't even offer to take a drink off our bill. Horrible way to end an evening that was decent up until that point.

I swore I wouldn't go again, but was suckered into it by a group of friends this past Sunday. Anyway, I was about the reach the bottom of my second beer and noticed an enormous amount of glass (sharp edges - size of a quarter!) at the bottom of my pint glass. That is SO DANGEROUS! How did a shard of glass like that get into my drink!!!??? A manager didn't even come to my table and apologize. They offered to take ONE beer of my bill. They should have paid the ENTIRE bill We were with a child too! what if he happened to get the glass in his drink? He wouldn't even know to look for it - it could have been such a horrible situation. I HATE this place - HATE it.

The Tuna Salad was incredibly fresh and Tasty – The service was perfect. Our waitress was Sarah and she made our visit very special. Her friendly smile and genuine desire to meet our every need made the occassion most memorable. The food was well prepared and delicious. Sarah brought it to us promptly and served it with just the proper flourish. She seemed to know intuitively what we needed when we needed it.

Needless to say, we left her a large tip. You should request her when you visit.

Go Enjoy Dinner! – We came about the restaurant on accident. We were headed to a different restaurant when we walked by and thought we would try it out. It was busy when we walked in but we were given attention right away. We had a great waitress and felt very comfortable from the start. This is something we look for in neighborhood restaurants even though we dont frequent them much. We ordered a few cocktails throughout dinner and they were great. The only downfall is that they do offer a happy hour but only if you are lucky enough to get one of the few seats in the bar area. Our food was good, nothing extrodinary, but very good. We really enjoyed ourselves. The only other thing I would complain about is that they were a bit overpriced. Our bill was over $100 for the two us and we didnt do anything lavish.( 2 martinis, 2 glasses of wine, 1 appetizer, and 2 entrees) So long story short its a great place, just expect to spend a little. Neighborhood restaurants with good food and service are hard to come by these days:)
