Above average – I was excited to try this restaurant after reading a write up in The Tennessean. I had checked out their website and had been dreaming about catfish, hot water cornbread and some banana pudding. Soooo, we settled on this as the place to go for our Mother's Day outing - 1 day early. Apparently Saturday lunch is not their peak time. We were the only ones there at 12:30 which almost kept us from going in. Never a good sign. Glad we did go on in though.
Pros: Catfish and turnip greens were the bomb. (un)healthy portions all the way around. Had to take home leftovers of the catfish as it was just more than I could hold. Others had apples, chicken, and potatoes and said they were all VERY good.
Cons: Atmosphere might leave a little to be desired. Found it to be quite dimly lit. In fact, we weren't sure they were open when we first arrived. Hot water cornbread was not cooked all the way. No white beans, salad bar, fried chicken or banana pudding available even though all of these things are listed on the menu as items that should have been there on Saturday. Really sad about the banana pudding. 2/3 of the drinks were "out" at the soda station. Spaghetti was nothing to write home about. I question whether or not I was charged the same price for my 4 year old even though kiddie plates are advertised and that's what I ordered. You don't get a receipt and there is no price list anywhere so you just kinda have to go with whatever you're charged. I never have a good feeling about these types of establishments. The website says $6.49 in one spot and then $6.49 and up in another. We were charged in the "and up" category and none of our dishes came with the advertised tomato/onion side. No biggie - just stating the facts.
All in all, I would eat there again if in the area but probably wouldn't make a special trip, at least not on a Saturday at lunch. That shift felt like more of an afterthought, perhaps serving primarily as the preparation for a busy night crowd??
