GREAT!!! – Place was clean. I love the fact that they actually want you to sample the icecream before you buy it. (chocolate oreo is wonderful) The chicken torilla soup was great. Me and my husband got differant sandwiches and they both were great. The staff was so friendly. It is so nice to see young people so helpful and pleasant with good cutomer service. We would definantly recommend this place to others.
Fresh, Home-made, DELICIOUS! – Try the West Side Sampler! I chose their chicken salad w/ provolone on wheat berry for my half sandwich, the broccoli salad, and their tomato basil soup. All three of these were super fresh tasting, and had wonderful flavor to them (especially the soup!!!). This dinner was a perfect balance of flavor, amount of food, and it even had some nutritional content--not always so easy to find with all the fried food out there. I travel for my job and throughout the past 10 days I have eaten at about 12 different restaurants in Knoxville. The only regret I have, is not trying this place sooner!
GREAT soup & ice cream – I've been to this restaurant a couple of times in the past year, and I'm really surprised by the previous reviews. The place is a bit run-down looking, especially compared to national chain restaurants, but I didn't see anything that looked too unsanitary - and I've worked in a restaurant before. I have to wonder if they've made some changes or have new owners or something, because the restroom looked fine when I was there (although it was a bit weird walking past the storage shelves to get to it!), the tables were clean, and the staff was friendly.
I like their selection of EXCELLENT soups & ice cream, and I'm willing to deal with the nothing-special atmosphere to get it. The soups are made fresh & are some of the best you'll find anywhere. My personal favorites are the chicken tortilla (complete with crispy tortilla strips you can add yourself) & the white chicken chili. They're reasonably priced, and they have like 6 or 8 choices. The sandwiches are so-so regarding if they're worth the price, but I like that they'll make them however you want - toasting the bread or adding extra ingredients or whatever.
They also have a ton of ice cream & sherbet flavors (I can't remember how many... it's got to be 30+ !), including unique ones like coconut, cinnamon (yum!), caramel, and several coffee flavors. It's a very dense, hard ice cream and the flavor is usually REALLY good. I spoke with the guy there (not the previous owner guy, which is why I'm wondering if they have new owners or management now) and he said they supply the ice cream & sorbet to several local upscale restaurants. I wouldn't be surprised if that was true, because the quality is good enough.
Personally I think this place is well worth a visit if you want some GOOD soup, ice cream, or other home-style food (like chicken salad, broccoli salad, etc.) that you don't find at too many other restaurants. I live in another state but make a point to stop by whenever I'm in the area.
avoid at all Costs or regret it – This place was absolutely nasty. The tables were gross and never cleaned, they had a few good employees but as far as I could tell the lady owner was a hag. She sat at a customer table and did paper work and was a horrible boss. Back to the Employees I really liked the Manager she was extremely helpful in every way possible and the younger man probaly in his 20s dont know his name but he had to quickest person and when he did something it actually tasted decent. There was a teen guy that worked there during the early summer i know that made me a nice wrap but other than that i have never had a good experience there. I have had to go back so much because of my boss he loved there birthday cake ice cream for some odd reason i found it to be revolting. I went into the restroom once and it was horrible there was stuff in the sink on the toilet and all over the floor. I highly disreccomend this restraunt to anyone who is thinking about it.
Avoid at all costs – This restaurant is owned by Vern Lindsay of Charter Cable Company's "Cooking with knoxville Celebrity Chefs" fame. The employees working here are anything but pleasant, and serve food that is actually of less quality than that a child could cook at home. I am very reluctant to ever write bad reviews of any restaurant, as anywhere can have an off day. However as a public service I wanted to let people know of the numerous health violations such as not using quaternary sanitizer to clean tables and surfaces, the fridges that never stay at the right temperatures to maintain safety, re-using disposable plastic containers for months such as those used to hold margarine or cookie dough. Even beyond those is the microwaving of cold soups in styrofoam containers, and leaving used knifes and scoops in bleach water allowing food particles to gather and firment for a whole day before cleaning. Please as protection of you and your familys health do not eat here.
