New Orleans' oldest barber shop provides good service – The oldest barber shop currently operating in New Orleans, Golden Shears provides good service, a traditional barbershop atmosphere, and is located Uptown on trendy Magazine Street, near Tulane and Loyola universities, beautiful Audubon Park, the Zoo, the Riverview (overlooking the Mississippi), the Poor Clare Convent (w/ unique gift shop), and the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar (although the Magazine Street bus offers the most direct public transit to Golden Shears, with a stop at State Street, only a few steps from the barbershop. It's a 5-chair shop. The five barbers have years of experience, span generations, and two of them are women. Barbers work varying shifts, Tuesday through Saturday. If you develop a preference for a particular barber, you should learn his/her work schedule. My barber doesn't work Thursdays, for example. I've been a Golden Shears customer consistently for over twenty years. It's been very dependable, and I always enjoy my visit there. A friend who lives in Cincinnati -- a visitor to New Orleans two or three times each year -- always makes a point of getting a haircut at Golden Shears when he's in town. Parking in the neighborhood can be challenge, but it's an interesting area for walking, no matter where you park. In short, and in conclusion, I'd bet that you'd appreciate Golden Shears as much as I have. See what you think. Maybe I'll see you there.
Be very very careful – I got the worst haircut of my life here - - so bad that I felt compelled to warn others any way I could. I sat down, told the older gentlemen that I just wanted a trim. He proceeded to not only shave the back and sides of my head down to the scalp - but it was not even straight. He shaved out around my ears about 2 inches above the ear so that I look ridiculous and there is no way to fix it without shaving my whole head. I told him afterwards that "this does not look good. Why would you cut someone's hair like this?" He looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about (or who I even was for that matter). I think he could have been senile. I felt a little bad for him, but come on ? he is employed as a barber! Help - can't go to work like this!
