Here's the thing about a lot of "classic" restaurants, especially in picturesque cities like New Orleans: they aren't always that good. Unlike Willie Mae's, which is fantastic, and serves a fried chicken so perfect it could serve as a standard for all future generations.

If you want fast food (chicken)go to KFC.but this is worth the wait – We had just returned from a cruise and we had seen Willie Maes on Food Network. So we decided to try it before we went back home.We had to wait 30 minutes for our food but I didn't mind at all if I wanted fast food I would have went to KFC.The food was great and the people were friendly too. We went back and talked to the grand-daughter of Willie Maes and I think her son. We enjoyed it and we will be back sometime soon!!!!!!

Gotta Love It! – I don't know about the other people who wrote reviews on this, but all I have to say is this. I have been visiting New Orleans since 2001 and just love the city and the people. It wasn't until 2004 I had the chance to eat at Willie Mae's and it was love at first bite!!! Since then I ALWAYS make it a MUST to stop by and get some good cookn'. Yes, I do have to say it was hard to get a table, but just like other restaurants...sometimes you have to wait for a table. But when I got the chicken and red beans (like I do on every trip) it was worth the wait! Now everyones taste buds are different...but obviously the people who wrote the other reviews obviously don't know good food. And if the food is just "so so" trust me...the lines wouldn't have been that long and you wouldn't had to complain about the wait. So someone is doing something right!! *lol* The food was great, the people were friendly...everyone that I know that has been or wanting to visit N.O. I always tell them to stop by and they are happy everytime with the suggestion. So, God bless the Willie Mae family and keep doing what ya doing...cause alot of people appreciate and respect the art of soul cookn'. Much love and respect from a Kentucky Girl

the greatest fried chicken in the world – I guess the self-centered slime writing these reviews are too stupid to realize that this restaurant was all but destroyed by hurricane Katrina and is barely keeping it's doors open at all. so sorry FOR YOUR inconvenience. sickening people!

Way too long a wait for very average food – Like a previous poster, I visited Willie Mae's after seeing it featured on the Food Network as having some of the best fried chicken in the U.S. The food would have had to be spectacular to overcome the incredibly bad service and long wait, but alas, the food was average at best. We arrived at 1:45 on a Thursday afternoon, were seated around 2:00. After 20 minutes of trying to catch a server's eye, I got up and found a busboy so that we could at least order our drinks. We got our drinks and were promised that the server would take our order soon. We continued to wait to order, but had some company, as many other tables were waiting for 30+ minutes just to order. At 2:55 (when the staff had posted the "closed" sign in the door), I finally made eye contact with a server and we were able to order. The restaurant's approach seems to be to wait on one table--serve drinks, take orders, serve food and clear empty plates before even appoaching the next table. We saw two other parties give up and leave after trying unsuccessfully to be served. To be fair, I believe that there were only 2 servers, with perhaps 17 tables in two rooms, but I've never been to a restaurant where you aren't even offered water and a chance to put in your order within 20 minutes. By the time we ordered, they were out of red beans and rice and cornbread. Willie Mae's doesn't have too many other options for sides, so we got an order of green beans and potato salad with our chicken. After so much wait time, we were quite hungry. Unfortunately, the food lacked any distinctive taste. The chicken was average--with very little flavor. The green beans tasted suspiciously like they had come out of a can. The best part was the potato salad, but even it wasn't too different than what you can get at a grocery store deli. All in all, very disappointing. I'm not sure what kind of meal that the Food Network folks were served here, but it could not have been anything like our meal.

Not Worth My Time Or Money! – On 4.22.08 I visited the restaurant because of a T.V. show on the Food Network. So I entered the restaurant with the mind set of tasting the best chicken in New Orleans. Boy was I disappointed! First the price was unusually high; $10.00 for 3 pieces of chicken and one side. Secondly, the wait was far too long at over 30 minutes. Then the waitress was so involved with one table that she forgot about me and another patron. And finally the taste??! The taste?.. (chuckle) What can I say?

The Beans: Tasteless.

The Chicken: Well it tasted like run-of-the-mill fried chicken. It wasn't bad, however neither was it spectacular enough for me too visit again. This is the same chicken that I?m sure many of my fellow New Orleans Residents grew up tasting within our own relatives? kitchens.

So as with everything in life, it?s a matter of choice?. Just not mine!

HOURS OF OPERATION – The hours of operation are Monday - Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It took me about two hours to find that information, so hopefully this is helpful to anyone else looking it up.
