This the best place I have EVER been. Sadly enough, due to my Bi-Polar, P.T.S.D., and sever enough depression, death was an option! I was treated with the upmost respect by all the staff, and was shocked how many different techniques they had to work with the individual..not a " group" Can Not Say Enough! Thanks River Oaks....Fort Myers, Fl.
My daughter has been in there 5 days and no one has called me to let me know anything I keep calling leaving messages and still no calls back so I went in and signed a 72 hour release All I can say is they better release my child .. That's sad when they can't call me about my 8 year old child !!! I am very upset and unhappy with this hospital !!! I will never send my child there again. I wouldn't even take my dog there !!!
New Orleans Institute is Outstanding – The New Orleans Institute for Trauma is outstanding. I have been there several times over the years and have come away each time with the renewal I needed to keep going. The therapists are all excellent and all groups are led by professional therapists (which is not the case in many places). They have been doing trauma work for many years and have really developed a seamless program. The nurses are also thoughtful and supportive. The other patients also taught me a lot, and being with people who understood something of my horrors was such a relief. We spend so much time keeping things under wraps; it's nice not to have to work so hard to hide it sometimes. The common space is very nice - large, with a ping pong table, piano, and endless art supplies.
If you are there to focus on healing and growth, you will find it an excellent place. Yes, there will be distractions - the individual rooms are a little ragged, the food is pretty bad, some of the psych techs are less personable than others, and it can be hard to witness other peoples' crisis. If you focus on these things, you won't be happy.
Take your own pillow, a big fluffy towel, comfy shoes (with no laces) and comfy clothes that don't require strings, belts or pins, luxe shampoo and soap, and a willingness to work on yourself and ignore the rest, and you'll be fine.
Too Christian oriented – Was in Blg 5 for Dual diagnosis. Concrete bunker with LOTS of noise and spartan furnishings. Mediocre maintenance, graffiti on furniture. Nothing like being screamed for at 5:30am for vital signs. Then again at 6:30am for 'meditation.'
Fellow campers were great, which is good, because orderly staff were mostly self absorbed and indistinguishable from campers. Doctor/therapist interaction was minimal, though Social Workers did their very best.
Christian symbols, 12 step surrender to God, and boot camp authoritarianism dominated the program. All my triggers at once! My PTSD was ignored in favor of of a diagnosis of alcohol dependency.
Smoking privileges were used to control behavior. I don't smoke. Lots of sugar and processed food, 20 minutes to wolf it down. Basic toiletries seemed to only be available from outside contacts. Better have friends on the outside when you're there.
Was summarily discharged when I was deemed unfit for access to Trauma group therapy. That was a little traumatic.
I did discover, to my surprise, that I am NOT an alcoholic.
Overall, group bonding was the most productive therapy offered. We worked hard on our problems with each other. This may not be true of all groups.
Extremely disappointed in irrespoonible care – We sent an adult family member to this facility suffering the effects of childhood physical and sexual abuse. After a mere 3 to 4 weeks of treatment opening old wounds and reliving past trauma, our family member was summarily discharged due to an insurance issue. The insurance issue was easily resolvable requiring merely time and cooperation. However, the staff of this facility had no discernable interest in cooperation or the welfare of our family member. It seems their beds were best occupied by those with no insurance issues. We were left with the unmistakable impression that our family member
Wrong impression – You both are talking about the psychiatric wing, building 6 i believe......I was in building 3 for trauma and a abuse patients and what I can tell you is this.
Patients can refuse medication. I've refused plenty trust me. And the reason their not chipper and happy to call you is it needs to be remarked in her file.
Ok im not staying the hospital is perfect, they lost my jewelry and my cell phone. Some staff were wonderful to be around others it was just a pay check and they couldn't wait to get out of there and spend it.
But what these people gave to me totally out shine all the bad things. no ones perfect but the staff their i consider them my saviors. the helped through the trauma of my childhood and understand my destructive behaviors. life is tough and nothing is perfect but the provider can only guide the patient not drag.
they have to want to heal and thats all i have to say on that i suppose, i owe these people a lot.
River oaks Hospital – The public needs to listen to Madam Butterflye. I too sent a marginally sick daughter into River Oaks, and got in return an over medicated and thoroughly damaged person. I am not sure what they did to her in only two weeks. Send your loved ones into this poorly run institution at your own peril. There is violence at this institution. Madam is the second person to talk about such travesty against sick loved ones. Madam is absolutely correct about the incompetency of the personnel. I even doubt the sanity of some personnel, and do suspect some may be ex-patients. Please look for a better one else where.
THE WORST POSSIBLE CARE IMAGINABLE – My daughter was kneed in the head by another patient and I was NOT notified. Doctor did NOT convey much info to me; STAFF WAS RUDE & UNCOOPERATIVE in EVERY way. CARE WAS HORRIFIC. VERY LITTLE WAS ACCOMPLISHED HERE -
