Surprisingly Good for the 'Hood – We're new to the Portage Park / Jefferson Park area and when Christmas Eve rolled around w/ nowhere to take the in-laws, we stumbled onto this place.
Smelled great on the outside, tho once we stepped inside, it was more than a bit smokey. No separation between the bar and dining areas. Tho after the Jan 1 smoking ban takes effect, I presume this situation will be resolved.
A steakhouse with a Greek twist is how I'd decribe the Veranda. We had a Saganaki starter and ordered a variety of dishes, from fish to the Greek salad. I got the prime rib and it was very good - and as a fan of Smith & Wollensky, Wildfire, et al., that's saying something. Entrees in the $12-25 range, from the salads to the steaks, with some cheaper sandwich options.
Service was attentive and friendly to our party of 6, including 2 kids under 3 years of age. Coffee was refilled numerous times. The Appletini that I had was big and good, decent for $7. Booster seats and high-chairs were available, tho lidded cups were not, so bring your own sippy.
Can't quite give it 4 *'s but probably would, once the smoking issue is resolved.
Veranda Char House – This was our first time here and we were unfortunately disapointed with the food. The grilled Calamari were rubbery and bland, the garlic salad dressing, steamed veggies and the chicken seashell soup appeared to be the store bought, institutional type. The Special of the House; BBQ ribs, were not very meaty and the sauce had a peculiar, almost musty taste. The Athenian chicken breast was "so so"at best . The decor was fine, it is basically a large room with an open bar area, with tables and chairs throughout. The lighting could be a little dimmer. The music; an FM radio station which played 80's dance music, combined with the volume from the TV's in the bar was too much, not to mention the smoke from the bar, made the entire place seem like the Smoking Section. Our server was friendly and attentive. I suggest, in addition to a new Chef, an investment in some ventilation to contain the cigarette smoke. some nice dinner music, and softer lighting with candles on the tables.
Editorial Review – Steak house serves sizzling steaks and chops in a warm atmosphere.
