Has Taken A Fall – The Happy hour food is very good. Potstickers, eggrolls, sake bombs...mmmmm. The cocktailers are pretty good considering how busy it is, but weve had a couple of bad experiences with service, but who doesnt.
We use to go there all the time for happy hour because of the cheap drinks, but lately with the Yardhouse opening up, we would just rather go there. The crowds are more mature, and they have a huge selection of beer. Plus one of our favorite servers that was at Kona is now at the Yardhouse. He was very friendly, even during the busiest of times, which I know can be hard.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a cool place to go, but it's nice to know that there are finally other options.
I would recommend Kona Grill to anyone and everyone! – I went to Kona Grill for my 38th birthday on January 29th...we had reservations at 8:30pm...got there at 8:15pm and were seated within 5 minutes. Our waiter immediately came to our table, got down to below our eye level...something that made me feel immediately welcomed and gave us his full attention....he made excellent food suggestions starting with the appetizers all the way down to our drinks...we started out with sushi...it was amazing...the flavors were incredible....we also tried the avocado egg rolls and the potstickers as appetizers and were immediately impressed with the fact that everything we had so far was outstanding...our entrees came...we ordered two entrees..the Sweet-Chili Glazed Salmon and the Macadamia Nut Chicken...there are no words to describe just how delicious our food was...we could not stop talking about it....during all this, our waiter came by several times to make sure we were enjoying our meal...another gentleman who appeared to be maybe the restaurant manager also came by to make sure we had everything we needed...everyone was so attentive...I was sipping on a raspberry martini...something that I normally would not care for but it was suggested by our waiter...I actually ordered three of them by the end of our meal...they were that amazing! This was the best birthday meal I have ever had. Our waiter made it an amazing experience. I recommend this place to anyone wanting a fantastic meal and excellent service.
LONG WAIT, BAD SERVICE, POOR MANAGEMENT ATTITUDE, NO ORGANIZATION – We visited this restaurant very often, and at first it was terrific, but it has really lost it's luster. I have no complaints about the quality of the food, it is the wait staff, the management's attitude and the lack of organization. If you want to go for a quick meal, forget it! If you want to plan ahead, forget it. Either way, we may get seated in an hour or hour and a half. While waiting, forget getting a cocktail or appetizer, the bar is so packed you cannot move, and there is usually 1 bartender during the day and two at night for the entire restaurant, and they cannot keep up. They will not get to you if you are not sitting right in front of them. The wait staff are snotty, young kids who feel you should be happy to be in their presence (with the exception of two waiters we know). The drinks usually come out right as you get your meal, so if you have been waiting awhile--you are parched! The Expresso or Cappicino machine is never in service. If you complain about anything to management, they do not seem like it is a big deal. I have had it with them. NEVER WILL RETURN.
Red Flad - dont eat here – The restaurant is billed as fine dining, but the atmosphere is that of a cheap night club or meat market.
Do not bother making a reservation - they will have a record of it when you arrive.
Our dinner actually arrived before our drinks. That is not to say that the bartender took an unusual amount of time to fill our drink orders. Rather, the food came out within 7 or 8 minutes. That may not be a red flag to the younger crowd, but anyone that knows fine dining, or has ever cooked a chicken breast or piece of halibut for that matter, knows that it takes longer than that to prepare.
Even the banana pudding we ordered was watery and most obviously reheated from a frozen state. It did not taste good at all. Between three people, we could not finish it.
The signature dish, the Macadamia Nut chicken was pitiful. It is obviously not fresh, the meat was dry, and had little flavor. The creamy sauce was too thick and tasteless, and the mashed potatoes tasted as if they were instant.
Two thumbs way down.
Best Sushi in San Antonio – The sushi here is great...one of the few places I would even eat sushi at in San Antonio unfortunately. The prices are probably comparable to most other sushi places except during happy hour. There is a wide array of things to choose from which are discounted around 50% during happy hour including sushi, pizza, and appetizers as well as drinks of course.
Happy Hour Schedule (from their website)
Reverse Happy Hour**
Service is good most of the time, the waits are rarely more than 20 minutes for entrees, the tuna wasabi is a favorite of me and my girlfriend for an appetizer choice and both of us love the Las Vegas sushi rolls for its different taste and ingenuity. This is definitely one of our favorite places to eat in San Antonio for the dim lights, friendly staff and delicious food among the already mentioned great prices during happy hour. I would not recommend this place for large groups though because it seems as they wait a long time to clear up enough tables. Great place overall.
Good Food-Great Service – My wife and I went to Kona Grill with another couple on Friday night. I had heard several great things about this resteraunt and wanted to check it out. When we arrived there was a 20min. wait (typical in San Antonio) so we went to the bar for a drink. There was limited space at the bar so we had to stand. They made the best mojito I've ever had. Once we were seated our waiter greeted us asked if we had been there before. When my wife informed him we had not he made several suggestions as to what was good. The couple we were with had been several times and had already told us how the Macedamia Nut Chicken was very good. We opted for the potstickers as an appetizer. They came out fairly quickly (about 8-10 min). For our entrees my wife had the Macedamia Chicken and I went with the waiters suggestion of Lemongrass Halibut. Our friends wife had the chicken as well while her husband got the pork tenderloin.. All of the food was magnificent. Everything from the flavor to the presentation to the portions were more than I hoped for. The ambiance of the place was great as well. The lighting could be a little brighter but it sets off the mood. They have an enormous aquarium which hosts an array of fish. I believe it it was saltwater but I can't be certain. I didn't have an opportunity to try any of the sushi but from some of the rolls I saw on other tables it looked pretty standard. Nothing spectacular. My wife and I plan on going back this weekend. The overall experience was awesome. Not at all like the two previous reviews I read.
Good food-bad service – The Pad-Thai and avocado egg rolls are great. The service was not so great. The hostess and the server who gave us our menus weren't very friendly. Our waiter was so-so. It seemed like all the staff was in a bad mood.
AWFUL service, GREAT food... – Kona Grill is the perfect place to take a date you never want to end- because most likely, it won't. We went during a visit to San Antonio, with a couple and their young child. They refused to give us a high chair, for our booth, saying it was a fire hazard, and only agreed after the child fell through the booster seat. We immediately asked the server for bread, to hold the hungry (and EXTREMELY well behaved) child over while waiting for our meal, and the bread alone took 10 minutes, at which point we got only 4 small slices of bread, for 6 people. It took 10 minutes after that (20 minutes after we had put in our order) to receive our appetizer of soup and potstickers (which WERE both delicious once they arrived). It then took 45 minutes after we received our appetizers to get our main dishes- most of which were sandwiches and salads- and even though it was apparent the child we were with was getting impatient and hungry. After speaking with the manager he was semi-sympathetic, but went on to tell us for 10 minutes about the high turnover rate in the restaurant industry, admitting that they were 5 servers short, and he had had to let people go because they were "unhappy with the tips they were making". The whole experience was quite dismal, but the food absolutely did live up to the other reviews. My best suggestions- Go when you're not too hungry, and want to make a day of your meal, don't bring children, and ask them to put the appetizer and main course orders in right away, as apparently that is not standard with Kona Grill. Also, the Tuna Burger, French Onion Soup, and Macademia Chicken were the best dishes we had.
Come Early Happy Hour only in Lounge/Patio – I have been to Kona Grill about a dozen times and well It's really over priced. I normally only go for Happy Hour but I made the mistake last night of going to the reverse Happy Hour. It was a madhouse! There was absolutely no room nor no way I was going to get a Happy Hour special in there. I was forced to dine at the sushi bar and pay full price. The sushi chef was amazing and super fast. The sushi was decent but pricey for the pieces 13 pieces ( 7 were nigri and 6 were maki roll ( cucumber) ) soup nor salad were included of the price of $21. The sake was mispriced on the menu, and the cucumber salad was nice but too much vinegar. This place is more of a Trendy hook up place, not a traditional dining restaurant. I'm sticking to my regular sushi joints but if you want to go for Happy Hour, I suggest arrive there right after work when it starts. The crowd is not so bad at that time.
Trendy Bar with good Drinks but limited seating – I like this place very much - food, drinks, sushi. Their reverse happy hour is one of the best. The only drawback is the limited amount of space at the bar. I just wish they would've made it much bigger with more seating if they knew they were going to promote such great happy hour specials. The sushi is ok but I don't expect high quality sushi from a place that doesn't specialize in it. When you first start going here, the food is great! But I'm the type to try different things and this place does not have a very large selection at all. Overall, it's trendy, average priced, and fun with your friends. It's also great to go after shopping since it's located in the mall!
