The only place I go for sushi – Barracuda Sushi is just about the only place I go for sushi these days. It's on Market street, near our house. I like to eat the sushi. The dragon roll is great. I like unagi. I prefer my edimame warm. They have a great Sauvignon Blanc from Australia that matches well.

trendy scene ... lousy sushi – I like a thumping techno soundtrack and $10 cocktails as much as anyone, so I thought Barracuda might be worth a try.

Unfortunately, the sushi at Barracuda is just not that good. The saba was dry, and the ebi smelled bad enough that I couldn't finish my piece. Most of the menu attempts to be "innovative" were jarring and overwhelmed the subtle flavors of Japanese cuisine, such as the lemon-chili-salt edamame and the nasty, heavy, tonkatsu-based dipping sauce for the soft shell crab.

Service was fair at best. After joining my wife at our table, I waited for 15 mins before a waitress offered to get me a drink. Even though we were there early and the restaurant was nearly deserted, the food came at a glacial pace.

Do yourself a favor: go to one of the other excellent sushi joints within a block, and leave Barracuda to the party boys. It's not worth it at half the price.

Great unique rolls – I went there with a group of six. The place was packed and we didn't have reservations. But the host promptly, found us a table for six within minutes. The food was excellent. Everything was so colorful and very good. We kept on ordering more food and more sake. Our server was excellent. He was great at recommending some of the popular rolls and cold sake. Overall, the food, service, and the atmosphere was perfect. The price was average compared to other sushi restaurants.

This neo-Japanese bar and restaurant draws on Peruvian and Brazilian influences to create a playful menu and cocktail list for the Castro. – Painted in bright red, orange and electric blue, festooned with criss-crossed bamboo and moving to the steady thump of techno, Barracuda is clearly not a destination for sushi-purists, nor does it try to be. There is a definite scene here, mostly made up of Castro couples and groups who come as much for the cocktails as they do for the Neo-Japanese, Peruvian and Brazilian-influenced food. Traditional cuts like nigiri and sashimi are offered, but the focus is on what they call "gunkan" sushi: raw fish matched with fresh fruit. The signature Barracuda roll contains (ready?) dried pineapple, red tuna, salmon, kaiware, avocado, wasabi-tobiko blueberry and mango sauce; that should give you an idea of the playful, almost iconoclastic treatment of sushi here. A few beers and sakes are offered, but the bar also shakes up negronis, sidecars and caipirinhas, the better to match the flamboyant décor, unique apps, and fruity fish.

Great new sushi bar in the castro – I love this new place, right along the same row as 2223...Great decor, and service...nice sushi rolls, and upbeat, fun music. A must try.
