Avoid at all costs. – I heard they closed down. It was probably for the best.
The owner wasn't cut out to have a business. He treated customers like dirt. I knew he treated the musicians like dirt. He treated his staff like dirt. He wanted Pappadeaux prices for warmed-over microwaved slop. 24.95 for a warmed-over plate of cajun shrimp alfredo? Forget it. Food was absolutely horrid. Did anyone ever look up at that horrible, disgusting roof? And drink prices? Outrageous. $10 cover charge? ...he was out of his mind.
The place was literally a gigantic hole-in-the-wall. Houston NEEDS jazz. It is STARVING for the jazz genre right now. Unfortunately, we have to see GREAT potentials for a slammin' place go up in flames due to bad advertising, bad management, and bad customer service. Right in the heart of the Galleria area, too - what a shame. He really could have advertised about the place MUCH better by way of online, paper, radio, or any other venue.
Houston NEEDED a place like 57 West Jazz Cafe to be successful. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until someone out there with excellent marketing skill and great business sense can come along and open up a place for every jazz lover in Houston. If you REALLY want good jazz, we'll just have to stick with Red Cat Jazz Cafe until something better comes along. Sorry it didn't work out, 57 West. You had your chance. And you blew it.
Thursday's are the Hottest in the City at 57 West – I went on a Thursday; they have Networking Mixer every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. After 9pm; you have to pay to get in. You will not be disappointed. You should bring your business cards; because that will allow you to meet likeminded individuals.
Great Ambiance, Amazing Customer Service – I visited 57 West in March of 2008. The club was packed and we were actually seated in the VIP area which was a pleasant surprise. The band performing this Saturday night was exceptional. What I most enjoyed was the level of customer service from the moment we walked in the door. The food was average at best, but we went for the music and were more than satisfied.
Decent – Relaxed, upscale place to hang out. Friendly service as well. HOWEVER, I agree with the comments made about the food not being very good. The first time I went I ordered the Spinach Dip and it was very bland and the chips were like doggy biscuts but when I told my waitress, she took it back without a problem and did not charge me for it. The second time I went, my waiter reccommended the Crab Cakes and they were actually great. Both times I went, it took a long time for my food and drinks to come out (I think they forgot about me both times). As for the music, I enjoyed the bands that played on both Friday and Saturday.
This Number is Wrong!!! – I bet this place rocks, cause I get calls for it all day long! The number 713-874-9222 belongs to a company called MHD OFFSHORE GROUP, I know this because I work there... I have sent an e-mail to this site trying to get them to change the current number, hopefully they will soon. SO, if you want jazz and food... this number ain't gonna do it.
However, I do play a little guitar, and I can always order pizza...
Hope someone actually reads these reviews before they call...
Glad to have 57 West Jazz Cafe' – Nice intimate setting. Not a bad seat in the house. The night I was there Stephen Richard was playing. That young man is fantastic...very entertaining and he knows how to make you feel the music. Marcus and Warren the owners, aim to please. I think this will be one of the premier venues in the city. Drop by and give it a try. I believe you'll enjoy yourself.
Music Great! Food & Sercvice horrible! – "Richard" who was playing the night I went was great. The food was disgusting, the grilled shrimp I ordered tasted like it was boxed shrimp heated in the microwave. Whoever their chef is, should be embarrassed for serving food that taste like that. My 12 yr. old niece could have cooked better than that! They need to decorate because it looks like they just opened the place up and put up several tables with candles. Not appealing to me at all. The host was loud and talked too much. I went to listen to music, not to someone talking!! The service was a turn off, after my friend and I were seated at an oversized table that could fit 5 people, we had been there for about an hour and were asked to move to a smaller table with some other woman. WHat the heck!! That was not cool at all. I don't think I would go back just because there were too many negatives versus positives. The only thing they have going is the music and that's it and that is not enough for me.
The music... AWFUL. The venue... AWFUL. The crowd... SCARY. No way I would recommend this place to anyone. There are far better places in Houston to spend your time and money.
Wonderful venue for listening to Jazz with a mature crowd – The music was great! The artist featured Jan 19th was Pete. Rodriguez and his band from Austin. Rodriguez plays a French Horn. He grooved to some Charley Parker tunes as well as some compositions of his own. Keep your eye open for this artist, if you are a jazz buff you will enjoy his CD. Be prepared that the cosmetics of the space are not perfect, but the music more than makes up for it!! I will go back and recommend to others as well. If the owners would warm up the place with a little paint and replace missing ceiling tiles it would do wonders for the atmosphere!
Great artists, Upbeat environment – This place is poised to be one of the premier new jazz spots in the city. Getting up close and personal with top artists is definitely a plus and once people find out about the place it will stay packed. I saw Julie Collier and the setting was both cozy and intimate. The owners Terry and Mark were very gracious and you can tell that they will aim to please. I can't wait to see what the future holds for 57 West and I plan on returning over and over again to check it out.....Priscilla
