You will not find anything that relates to Batman inside this Gotham Tavern. What you will find is a HH menu that goes till 7 then starts back up again at 9pm. Typical bar food like wings, burgers, quesadillas and dips reign over this menu. Unique "jenga" like booths and modern art create coziness in this tavern. Incidentally it's name is derived from the building it is house in, The Gotham Building.

The best value at Gotham Tavern can be found during the hours of four and seven in the evening for the happy hour menu--a long list of chips and dips and shrimps for mere dollars. And the drinks are stiff, sometimes a little too stiff.

This place is amazing! – I try and frequent the Gotham whenever I am near down town. I find the service has always been great and the staff very friendly and accommodating! I have NEVER had a bad meal here! And I eat out alot due to my business. I think Barry is one of the finest Chefs in Portland. In one instance that comes to mind, I was talking to him about a summertime meal I was jonesing for since the weather had been cloudy and rainy longer than it seemed it should...he asked me if I wanted him to make the dish for me. I said yes and it was even better than what I make at home! Right there, out of the blue - he heard my culinary desire and he made it happen. Now that to me redefines service! Just for your info - the meal was a grilled chicken breast over a salad with a Thai like peanut sauce dressing...is your mouth watering yet?

Because it should be! It was a wonderful pick me up and totally off the cuff for Barry to make.

Julie, the bartender, is always smiling and quick to get your drink.

I find this place is like Cheers and I feel like Norm from the TV series - they make me feel comfortable and cared about. That is rare in this city from a neighbor hood tavern!

Holy hot sause – I've been to the Gotham a number of times as a customer and as a performer. The staff (Barry and Julie) is always cheerful and up for conversation. They have a great open-mic on Thursday with Steve or Chris at the helm and a happy hour menu that's hard to beat. It's quiet, cozy and the Lincoln log decor is unlike anything else in the city. Overall I'd say the location isn't ideal but if you're up for the short drive it's more than worth your while.

Eek - just me? – Here's the deal. Arrived near the end of happy hour with two pals. Inspiring light fixtures and low booths were fun to check out, and the bar is definitely unique. Our service, however, was slow from initial greeting to presentation of the check. Turtle slow.

I'm a pretty patient diner, and in general I have a lot of empathy for my waitstaff. But I shouldn't be seduced by provocative decor and delicious food (more about that later!) only to be neglected by my server. She wasn't pretentious or cold, just aloof and slow moving. The restaurant is fairly open, so I got to watch my fair server mill about aimlessly. There was no sense of staff comraderie--- her colleagues didn't bail her out when she obviously missed the ball. The manager flashed a friendly smile, but it was the only one in the course of the whole meal.

Despite the service, the food was great. We started with spicy buffalo wings and hot artichoke dip. The spice was right and the dip was great (though Chef, a little more warmth in the chips would be super!). Salads were next, and while two of us embraced our usual bleu cheese, definitely go for the house dressing. We all tried it--- what's bad about a bacon gorgonzola balsamic vinagrette? Nothing, from where I'm standing!

Aaaah, the entrees. We opted for Cajun Chicken Linguini, Honey Bourbon Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Sweet Potato Fries and Mom's Meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Again, we sampled each others dishes with wild abandon. The linguini was tasty, and the presentation was beautiful. The tenderloin was cooked just as was requested, and the glaze was *absolutely* worth it. While I could've used a little extra drizzle of glaze, it was divine overall. The sweet potato fries were also fantastic. The meatloaf and mashed potato dish was likewise great in presentation, and pleasing to the palette. It didn't strike us as "above and beyond" but something called Mom's Meatloaf didn't need to be a recreation or abstraction.

One of the best kepts secrets in Portland! – Great friendly service is just part of the experience here, from the extremely helpful waitress, the cook checking to make sure everything is up to par, and the interactive music. The food is easily some of the best for the price around. Quite and comfortable tables make this place great for a first date or group outing. Hand made salads show just how much care goes into your meal. Drinks are more than reasonable and well made. Highly recomended to anyone looking for a relaxing outing.

Hip, Romanitc, The best – The atmosphere of this place is one of a kind. Whether you?re out for drinks, on a date, meeting clients, or just plain hungry, this place fits the bill. Live music in the evenings is quiet and pleasant. The candles on every table are nice, but the room?s still lit well enough to read the menu which is packed full of amazing food.

?Classic dishes with a modern twist? is the way that I?ve described it. The chicken sandwich has added flair with panko breading and served on a ciabatta roll; the risotto is the best you?ll have anywhere in Portland, and the appetizers are a sure thing. In fact, my only complaint so far is that the artichoke dip is too small. Order it, but order two. Or try the lettuce wraps, wings which please both me and my fiance, who has a very different tolerance for heat and idea of what a good wing is, or ask any of the friendly wait staff for their recommendations.

I?ve been in several times now and had a total of four different servers. They?re sociable without making you feel like you have an uninvited guest at your table and they know how to please. I?ve never had to wait too long for my food, or felt rushed to leave. One server bought a round for my table after a small spill and Barry, the chef ,let me wash up and cook my own food!

Great meeting place with good happy hour. – Great place to meet up with friends or business associates. Good happy hour, great food and drinks. They have a couple of "pods" for semi-private meet ups. Casual with class.

Great Ambience and Delicious Food! – We had a bunch of friends head over for dinner and drinks ? I think between all of us we ordered just about everything on the menu! I loved the polenta and I had the ?catch of the day? ? Halibut on a mushroom risotto . . . it was heaven! Great food ? loved the ambience, perfect music for the mood ? the only thing that lacked was the wine ? 3 choices . . that was it! Their chef drums up killer food ? they should ask her to pick some wines to pair with the food!

1of4chicksonfood – A group of 8 of us slid into the coolest (and fairly private) booth/table at Gotham Tavern lastnite - we felt as if we were inside a wine barrel beautifully made with reclaimed woods. Our waiter kept our drinks full and the chef (you go girl!) kept our mouths full and our tummies very happy. The food was wonderful. I had the Cuban Sandwich with very yummy hand-cut fries. But of course I sampled everything else on the table. The frisee salad was amazing, the herb roasted potatoes were to-die-for and the cauliflower soup was delectible!

Not only was the food good but the atmosphere was very welcoming. The finishing touch was the check - their entrees are very well priced for the amount of food given. It was a great experience overall!

horrible experience – my husband and i try a new restaurant every weekend; we always refer to the citysearch to help confirm our decisions. upon recommendations from friends and excellent reviews on this site, we thought the gotham would be great. the only good thing i can say about it is that our waitress was nice. my husband ordered a mandarin salad and added chicken (per the menu option) and i asked if i could add chicken to a veggie pita. the waitress said she wasn't sure, so i said okay, let me know and if not, i'll order something else. she never said anything, so i assumed i would get a veggie pita with chicken. instead, 30 minutes later (after being out of drinks for 20 minutes), i received a piece of pita bread wrapped around broccoli and cauliflower that seemed to have been boiling in butter all day; it was not even edible. and my husband received a small plate of lettuce with a few segments of mandarin on it. we were curious what had taken so long since their were no other diners there and we didn't even get our chicken! so the waitress returned the salad to the kitchen and brought it back with about three chunks of chicken on it . the real problem was that this side salad was $10. as was my inedible "veggie" pita.

on top of that, the cook looked stoned, the kitchen was filthy, and i saw the cook drop a towel on the floor and then wipe a counter with it!!! yuk.

all told, we were there over an hour, were only offered drinks long after having finished them, our bill was $30, and we had to go eat when we left.

i guess maybe we didn't look cool enough to be there.

in summary if you like overpriced appetizers disguised as dinner, dingy kitchens, and you don't like to have drinks with dinner-by all means try the gotham.
