Great seafood! Excellent lobster roll -- killer view – I just got back from Sam's Chowder House. Another great experience. I had 6 kumamota oysters and a lobster roll. I'm in heaven. Everytime I go to Sams I tell myself I'm going to try something else but I just love the lobster roll. I did try the hallibut with corn and truffle butter the other night. That was to die for. So good. I'm a creature of habit though and the lobster roll is my favorite. I like the fact that it has no mayo but just a little bit of butter -- yum!!!! The outside if really nice to as they have these cool heat lamps that look like palm trees and I love sitting in the chairs outside, drinking my beer and watching the harbor. It's a great place to go, the food is excellent and I'm always treated nice. I highly recommend it.
Give me a break! – Sam's Lobster Roll was touted as one of the best in the nation? Pleeeeeeease! Sam's is a nice enough place right on the ocean. It sits next to a small man-made harbor and a not unpleasant place to have a meal. The wait staff was very nice. Service was good as well. No complaints on those points. The Lobster Roll? Although not prepared badly it was virtually flavorless. The roll itself was OK. The size of the roll, lobster all included was not very big considering you pay $19.50 for it some potato chips and some equally nondescript cole slaw (maybe 6 forks full). I live in San Jose and my girlfriend and I traveled there because my girlfriend was all excited about the place. What are you going to do? I'm not saying Sam's is a bad place, but this recent today show piece claiming the lobster roll at Sam's was one of the top five in the nation is beyond ridiculous.
In other words, go ahead an go, but think twice about spending 20 bones on the roll.
Great seafood with a view – Just ate here for the first time on Friday with a group of friends. We had a fantastic lunch. Didn't hurt that the weather was warm and sunny, so we got to eat outside on the patio. Actually, even it's it foggy and cool out there, it looked like they had enough heaters to keep the patio pretty toasty. We were seated right away by the hostess and water and bread appeared quickly. I don't remember out server's name, but she was professional and very friendly. We had come picky eaters in our group and she was great about giving completely explanations of some of the dishes and handling lots of "on the side" requests. 2 of us ordered the lobster rolls, one ordered the tuna poki appetizer and a bowl of the chowder, and the other had the crab louie. I have to say, that Sam's has one of the best lobster rolls I have ever had. None of that heavy mayo lobster salad - this was pure chunks of lobster in what tasted like seasoned butter and some celery for crunch. The bread was grilled just the right amount so the whole thing would hold together when you picked it up. It tasted like it had just come out of the shell (which it probably did since I noticed a whole tank of lobsters when we walked in the door). This is what a lobster roll should be! My friend loved her tuna poki - said it was nicely spiced, and said the chowder (red version) was also very good. The crab louie also got rave reviews - lots of big pieces of crab. We ended up hanging out there for a while (girls afternoon out!) and eventually ordered dessert. We got one tiramisu to split, but it was so good that we had to order a second. I highly recommend this place. The food was great, service friendly, it has a nice kick-back vibe (ok, maybe our bottle of wine helped out) and beautiful views. Enjoy!
A bit leary... – This was our 1st visit to the restaurant. The food was good, service was great, cocktails wonderful. However the middle of the night after eating here I became incredibly ill. Doubled over in sharp stomache pains, vomitting & extremely loose stools. We had oysters, mussles & clams. So doesn't really narrow it down, being as it was all shellfish.
Food only Fair. Price High – I just returned from a lunch at Sam's . The lobster roll was terrible, greasy and had no flavor. The service was very slow I had to ask for water refill 3 X and they were not even that busy, The only time we really saw the waiter was at tip time. The location is great but the food and cost is not worth a return trip.
Questionable service – My girlfriend & I always drive down the coast on Sunday's and the parking lot is always packed, so we were excited to finally eat here. We walked in, one of the the hostesses promptly seated us and there was a lot of smiling faces abound. The menu looked great and we ordered from Sean, our waiter. We were stoked about trying out their namesake chowders and for the entrees of grilled shrimp salad and the ahi tuna burger. About 10 or 15 minutes later, Sean came out with our entrees. He placed them down abruptly and even spilled most of my meal off of my plate. All I got out him was an, "!Oh!". He just walked away. Walked away? No apology? No spin on it and make the situation humorous? I've served tables before in my college days and in situations like this, I would, at the least, have made light of it. Something to compensate for my flub. I was so shocked that I didn't get to state the even more obvious; "Where's our drinks and soup?! Those things come BEFORE the entree, right? It took a bit to flag down one of his fellow servers and he came out with our soups. I told him I wasn't happy with his walking away after he poured half my plate on to the table, he apologized and then realized he didn't have our drinks either. The food was OK but now I had to scarf down our soup. He didn't even offer to keep the entrees warm for us. We had our soup and then catch up to our entrees before they turned cold. The server did come back to check on us but very uncomfortably & told us that our soups were comped. I thanked him reluctantly. Another 15 minutes passed and strangely enough he brings out two soups to go. We finished our meal and he brought us our check. No offer for dessert, no refill/ offer on my drink or water. I tipped him $8 on a $50 lunch (including tax). We threw the soups out later. Who knows what he did to those. All in all, the food was OK but a bit pricey. A nice setting and handsome staff. Other places can have my money.
Over-priced mediocre food – Although the view is beautiful, it doesn?t make up for the average food. The ?New England? clam chowder wasn?t at all, and the dressing for the Caesar salad was oily and bland tasting. We were disappointed with the food and to top it off, found it to be too expensive for the quality we were served.
Finally HMB restaurant with a view and great food – A typical day after Thanksgiving in Northern California has always meant a visit to the beach. While several ocean view establishments exist in Half Moon Bay, the food has been a trade-off until now. What a pleasure to find Sam's, owned by the folks who have brought us Cetrellas in town. Just past the Beach House in the old Anchorage location, the inside is spacious with big picture windows. The food is even more impressive. We had the perfectly done salmon with artichoke hearts and a squash puree. Also tried the crispy calamari appetizer--very light and good. And the New England chowder which was a little thin but very tasty. Can't wait to return for dinner. Plenty of outdoor table seating (with heaters) or relaxing in Adirondack chairs. You can bring your dog with you outside, and walk along the ocean path below. Service was excellent. Wine choices included a Tattinger brut rose, something you don't see that often.
Great place -- tasty food and fantastic view!!! – Just went to Sams Chowder House and it was outstanding! I really enjoyed the Clam Chowder and the fish and chips were crispy and not greasy. I had a couple of oysters as well and they were tasty!! I liked the fish market cause you can eat dinner and then pick up fish for the next day and you handle two things at once. The view is fantastic and the wait staff were really nice. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back.
It's all about the view – It was a beautiful, sunny day when we had lunch at Sam's, so the highlight was definitely the view. The food was pretty average and the service left a bit to be desired. Having recently relocated to the Bay Area from the East Coast, I'm still getting used to the slower, more relaxed pace out here...but this place took it to a whole other level. We waited a long time for our chowder appetizer, although I'm sure the stuff sits in a giant vat in the kitchen and is ready to be served anytime. And we waited absolutely forever for our entrees - all told an hour probably passed from the time we ordered to the time our entrees arrived. No big deal if you're having a leisurely brunch with nothing to do afterwards, but we started getting a bit impatient. I'd also agree with some of the other reviewers that most of the items on the menu are a bit overpriced - but given the size of the place and the number of people working there, they probably need to charge for their food in order to make profit. I haven't explored Half Moon Bay that extensively, but I'd imagine there are much better seafood restaurants in the area - and some probably have an equally beautiful view.
