Cork Factory = Awful – I'll start with the positive - I liked my actual apartment.
Now, the rest... every interaction with the office staff was unpleasant at best! When I moved to Pittsburgh I was in a bind as my original housing plan fell through as I was en route. I visited the Cork Factory and took the tour and was immediately turned off by the snooty tour guide. I mean it's a cool enough building but come on...she just was not that cool. Like I said, I was in a jam, so I took the apartment. The entire rental process was painful capped off by the day I actually signed the lease. I had an appointment but was made to wait almost 2 hours because the same snooty tour guide was out giving tours. At this point I had given them deposit checks and committed to the apartment but yet I had to wait. Give me a break! I don't get to schedule appointment and then show up 2 hours late and then act like a jerk on top of it! No one does - except Alison at The Cork Factory. Then, as I was reading the lease I realized the termination date was wrong. Alison caused a scene and treated me like I didn't understand our conversation. I'm sorry but I feel confident that I'm a little smarter than an apartment leasing agent. So, after telling her it was unaccepatable she further continued the scene and finally called management so she could get approval to correct the lease. An hour later I was out of the office and I couldn't have been more relieved. Then it came time to actually move in and the office staff struck again. I was slated to move in during one of the blizzard days last winter and my movers were late. I was bummed but it wasn't a huge shock given the road conditions. The staff was completely inflexible with the timing of the move (which was delayed a couple of hours) and actually tried to kick my movers out of the elevator!! All so they could move rental furniture out of a unit - their model unit!! Give me a break! My movers and the rental movers were grown up enough to handle the coordination and it went fine - without the Cork Factory staff involved.
The Cork Factory advertises itself as a pet friendly building. This is hilarious. What this means is they are happy to take your additional pet rent but will make your life with a pet miserable. Also, you pay a deposit, monthly pet rent and then an additional non-refundable pet deposit to cover additional pet damages, however, they don't actually use that to cover any pet damages. That's just an extra source of income for them. When I moved out there were a couple of TINY spots in the second bedroom but I was specifcally told NOT to have the carpets cleaned. I had spot cleaned and had the apartment cleaned and assumed they cleaned all carpets prior to the next tenant. They do, but they ensure that the previous tenant pays that. The two tiny spots in the guest bedroom cost me $168 out of my deposit! You could have an entire house cleaned for that much!
The whole experience with the office made it feel more like they were RAs in a college dorm, rather than property managers. Most of the other tenants were pretty great and most that I spoke to shared many of the same feelings as I had. There were, however, several older tenants that were absolute nightmares. They had nothing to do so they loved to take it upon themselves to report any infractions to the office staff. The staff refused to even have a grown up conversation about things that actually occured but chose to take the old geezers word so that they could have an excuse to fine you. It was absoultely maddening!
The whole experience was awful and I could not wait to get out of there! It may be one of the 'cooler' buildings in Pittsburgh, and the location is great, as are the grounds BUT it is definitely not worth the aggrevation!
