Blaaaa – Ehh, its what you would expect from a bunch of college kids cooking. The food was blah-zay, the guy at the grill was going from texting, to hands in his pockets, to reading, to putting cheese on burger (with hands), to texting, without washing hands in between. The fries were good. The mixed drink (rum & coke) was more like brown water and ice. People were nice and the atmosphere was quiet. I'd give them OVERALL: C/C+
It's definitely slid but it's not terrible.... – I agree with the previous post that Downtime has slid in the last year or so, but the place is definitely not hopeless. Build your own pizzas are tasty ($6 will offer plenty of pizza for one), and some menu items are interesting and above average for local bar food (Bruschetta, Avocado Burger). If you're looking to have a few pints with some quality bar food for lunch or dinner, you'll be able to find something you like. The staff aren't rude and they have been acceptably attentive in the 20+ times I have eaten there over the years, even recently. After happy hour booze is typically not as cheap as can be found at The Library however you get a less pretentious crowd at Downtime and noticeably better service. Many weekend nights have live music to offer so if that's your thing, try Downtime...if you want to hold an intimate conversation with people then it may get a bit loud for you.
Unpleasant gritty service. Terrible oily over salted food. Avoid for lunch or dinner. – Downtime might be a "good place to get drunk" but stay away if you want to eat lunch or dinner.
I work at the U of M and have seen this place slide rapidly downhill. It used to be that you could get a decent plate of pasta or an edible pizza here, but recently I have been terribly disappointed every time I visit.
The service is terribly slow despite a lack of customers, the waiter/bartender is antisocial and the poorly made and presented food could have come from a frat house cafeteria. The pasta sauce is oily. They leave out ingredients advertised on the menu, and they bring you the wrong food, repeatedly. I was there this afternoon and although I was one of two customers, my food was wrong (came with chicken or fish when I ordered vegetarian) and it took forever to reach my table.
I now feel ill after eating a plate of their pasta.
Downtime gets a total thumbs down as a place to eat. For lunch or dinner, eat elsewhere.
Good inexpensive food (not cheap quality) Seriously the BEST happy hour in the U of M area. – Honestly, it's right up there in food quality with the loring pasta bar. So instead of heading to the Loring before a show at the Varsity or Dinkytowner, head over to Downtime to get taken care of.
And the drinks during their numerous happy hours, they pretty much pay YOU to drink their alcohol, its that cheap.
You won't be sorry that you tried this newly found u of m gem. TRY IT.
The parking is validated as well.
You really can't go wrong.
Perfect for a cheap date night, OR if you have more money to spend, shower your significant other with attention, good food and drinks for a lower than average cost.
Adjacent to the Dinkydome and close to University sports arenas, Downtime offers classic American fare in a cozy atmosphere. – In Short
Dark earth tones and hanging decorative lights make this classy bar and grill a comfortable and intimate venue for after-class conversation or a pregame dinner. Northrop theater crowds and Gopher football fans enjoy the window-side seating and pasta choices, while students take the pub-style tables in back during happy hour for tap beer and bruschetta. Hamburgers, sandwiches and pizza round out the menu while three arcade games in the back offer more sources of entertainment.
