I Love Thai Food – I went to Sticky Rice with my friend for the first time for Happy Hour. We were surprise how good and inexpensive the food was. we ordered from Happy Hour menu which is only $10( Padthai noodle, chicken satay and Thai beer), My friend ordered Margarita Sampler, which we think Yuzu flavor is the best.We enjoyed food, beautiful decor, and the service. We definitely comimg back.
Terrible service! – I will not recommend anyone to go to this restaurant ever again!!! I called once and asked about the ingredients of the dish I would like to order. The girl on the phone was not helpful and rude! She did not bother to find out the ingredients and said she got to go and hung up the phone. What kind of service is that???? BAD!!!!!!
Quite a disappointment – I went to this place last month and the food stank (literally). Somebody order a beef stew and it literally smelled of a cow in a shed. We initially thought it to be caused due to detergent remaining on the plates, because everybody else had soapy entrees. On getting it the second time, it stank even more.
The appetizers were good, but the entrees left much to be desired. Also, I struggled to get the slightest hint of alcohol in my drink. Overall, the food wasn't worth what we paid for it.
This could have possibly been a one-off experience, since it was my only time at the restaurant.
Usually Love it, Terrible time! – Ok, so i've eaten here about 20 times, and normally i LOVE it...I nomally think that people who complain when a restaurant gets really good reviews are just people who had one bad experience and are uptight. Here is why I didn't like it, and will likely cease all future dinner parties:
My boyfriend decided to throw me a party there a week ago for my birthday. I had over 10 friends there, and at first, everything was fine. We were allowed to order off the regular menu instead of fixed price, which was nice. I, along with another friend, ordered the Ginger Chicken, whch I've had (and loved) there numerous times. I had friends order other things off the menu that they would have ordered at other thai places. Ginger Chicken, to me, is fairly simple. not spicey, veggies chicken, can't go wrong. In the menu, it did not say anything about spiciness nor lead me to believe it was any different from any other thai place on the planet, including theirs, which I've had before. When it came out, it was covered in little peppers that resembled jalepenos. They were spicy as all hell and were literally so hot that my tongue started swelling. Both my friend and I couldn't even eat it.
By the time our waiter checked in with us 20 minutes later, everyone else had finished and we were no longer hungry. When I complained (which I rarely do being a waitress myself), the guy basically said I had to order something else because they werent going to take it off the bill. They refused. That was their policy. (and let me tell you, I know how a micros system works-anyone can take anything off of any menu at any time, so don't give me that you can't). Although in no way, shape, or form, did I know that this normally unspicy dish was going to burn my mouth off. There was an opportunity to make it right, and they didn't. And I get that in some cases, an order may get screwed up, a reservation lost. Things happen. But this was thier POLICY. Meaning that even in the future, should the same situation arise, nothing would change. That even though, a ginger chicken item on the menu did not come out as it said it would it was not their fault. It was mine (I even grabbed a menu again to see if I missed a little chili pepper symbol or an asterik, or an ingredient-but NO WHERE did it say spicy). So I ordered a pad thai to go (I was told I was going to pay for something), walked outside, and gave it to a homeless guy. I wasted my money, I might as well waste theirs a little too! My friend didnt get anything bc the spiciness made literally made him sick. and they chaged him for it. Its really sad because like I said, I've given them a lot of business in my time as a NYer, and because of their management and the way they handled a situation, its unlikely I will ever spend another cent there.
Good food, good times. – This restraurant is great. It's so cheap and the food is good. I got five appetizers to go for about thirty dollars. What's also great is that if you dine in, you can bring your own beer or wine which is different for sure.
Overpriced Thai – The Lower East Side is a great neighborhood to live and work, but there is a lack of healthy and yummy food for lunch. It is difficult to find a meal under $15 and I ask myself what am I paying for?! To go cartons? - maybe....
So Sticky Rice has decent Thai food (myself being part Thai), but their lunch special only applies if you sit in, not pick up or take out. I probably would sit in too, if I weren't working a few doors down, but even still it is freezing at their establishment, during this time of year (December) and nothing is worse than eating in the cold. The large and heavy draped curtain over the doorway IS NOT HELPING.
I have ordered from them a handful of times (for pick up), but could not take advantage of the Lunch Special ($7.50). So the waiter told me they have Daily Specials, which were $6.95. I happily ordered these for weeks, to then be told today, they no longer offer it for take out. What is the deal? I would be happy to order from them 3 or more times out of the week, but because they cannot make up their mind on how much they want to charge their local patrons for lunch - I will give them my business no longer.
Overall they are a bit snarky and rude. In a time where businesses are failing - they could try a little harder.
OHHH! And I forgot to mention - their Christmas decor is dried up and in need of changing. They have a large branch in a vase with mildewy water, but refuse to clean it, change, or buy another fixture. So please don't eat at the bar, as a glimpse of the putrid water may turn your stomach. The last time I went in they had a piece of cloth loosely tied around the vase to obviously hide the filthy vase - UNSUCCESSFUL. I hope they read this and make some changes; customers are not blind and do really care and notice.
yelled at – apparently they differentiate their weekday staff vs friday staff, b/c i called to make a reservation for friday at 830pm on tuesday and called again on wednesday to add one more person to my party, and on friday 2hrs before my reservation, someone at the restaurant called to tell me that they should've never made me the 830 reservation and apparently that they only do 8 or 10pm and their weekday staff had made a mistake. and then the hostess made it very clear to me that i needed to be out by 10 and i replied saying I think that should be ok. but the hostess insisted on saying no we need you to be out by 10. and i replied again i think that should be doable but i am being told this now. and then the hostess got irritated and said we don't want any problem tonight so i am going to cancel your reservation and hung up on the call.
avoid friday – the first time i went there, it was a really enjoyable experience. the food is pretty good. the second time i made it for friday night which i guess is pretty busy time for them, the hostess was pretty rude.
Cute, cheap, no A/C – Went here on a Monday night with a friend, and it's a small restaurant, but nicely decorated. I don't know if they just don't have A/C or if it wasn't strong b/c it was a little sticky (no pun intended) and humid inside. We started with the Mango Flower Dumplings which were amazing. I would go back simply to eat these again. For entrees we got the Cashew Chicken and the Spicy Basil Noodles, both of which I would recommend. It's a cute, cheap spot, perfect for a first date or a trendy-ish dinner with a friend.
Great value for money and tasty – Liked the funky decor and enjoyed sitting in one of the booths (although they're smaller than they look!). Had the spicy salmon lunch box which had a delicious tomato sauce which tasted like an italian and thai fusion. Service was a little slow but we were in no hurry on a lazy Sunday. $26 including tip for lunch and sodas for two - great value.
