In the East Village, mood and decor make way for what counts: cheap and fresh Middle Eastern fare. – The Scene
A glance through the window at this hole-in-the wall alerts newcomers that ambience isn't this restaurant's strength. Worn and lacquered wood tables fill the dive's cramped seating area, toning down bright orange walls and blaring Middle Eastern pop music. Meals happen near an open kitchen, glimpsed first hand en route to the restroom.
The distinct flavors of the Middle East strike delicious harmony in the starters made for sharing. Babaganough has a subtle hint of garlic, fatoush salad arrives topped with the crispest of pita bread, and at just a couple bucks each, cigar-shaped bourek satisfies cravings for sweet and savory all at once. The chef prepares traditional dishes best (as in the entree-sized shawarma plate) but misses on complex creations. In the chicken pastilla, raisins and phyllo dough overpower basmati rice and jajik sauce, whose honeyed zing comes off better in the rice pudding, daintily topped with chopped pistachios.
Best Baba Ganoush – We stumbled upon this outstanding middle eastern gem. Service was great, food was incredible and the rice was perfect!!! We started with the Baba Ganoush, which was so fresh, and the pita's were piping hot. We had the Shwarma and the Kofka Kebab Plate --- both were perfectly flavored with authentic spices and were accompanied by the best mint tea we've had in the city. The Baklava was by far the best I've ever tasted!!! Not too sweet, pastery was flaky and delicious. We will definately be regulars at Taj Almoulouk ... we can't wait to go back with friends and taste the rest of what's sure to be an amazing menu.
This place defines what Falafel, Mezzes, and Kebabs really are. – I am very certain that, you cannot find a better price/quality efficient alternative to this place in tri-state area. I have been a customer at Taj-Almoulouk for three times already and I?ve got to say that I was impressed by their outstanding food and very affordable prices.
It is clear that the home-made food is prepared by real professionals who are excellent at what they are doing. You can get your falafel or hummus literally at hundreds of different places in Manhattan, but if you have not yet tasted Taj?s falafel, appetizers, and kebabs, then you have missed out on the melting taste of them.
gourmet middle eastern cuisine in this great little hideaway – The restaurant is typical east village - small, quaint, easy to walk by. But the food is far from typical - it was actually amazing at several levels. Moderately priced cuisine right next door - what a gem. Every ingredient was super fresh, presentation detail was there, and all prepared on premises right in front of you. Truly a gem. Go there before you can't get in any more!!
A little gem – This small restaurant counts amongst the best Middle Eastern eateries in New York. It's nicely priced and already got some good reviews. The Lebanese chef worked in 5 stars restaurants in the Middle East and studied under some of the best chefs in Paris. The staff is eager to please, a lot of care is put in the cooking: all the food is made fresh all the way to the pita bread made from scratch and cooked in an oven before your eyes. All the ingredients are carefully picked and the tabouleh was the best I had in years. The falafels are impeccable, crusty and not too salty. The houmous the best around the East Village. The dessert, a rice pudding was a killer. Taste is subtle and fresh all across the line. Highly recommended.
