Jin is located around the corner from a supplier to Sushi restaurants and as expected had some of the freshest Sushi and Sashimi I have tasted. Jin is also located on the site of an old bar, the type of place most people would call a “Dive”.
The most universally accepted feature of a Dive is dark lighting and its unseemliness. The windows of Jin need a cleaning. I almost walked out when I was given a greasy, dirty, almost unreadable menu.
The focus of Jin is on its Sushi bar and it is delightful. The chef is fast, efficient and knowledgeable. I am sorry to say that is not the case for the wait staff, who’s English is minimal.
I ordered smokes eel in my dinner sized bento box ($ 18.95) and I received a single beautiful large piece of eel, but no knife to cut it. I asked for a knife, but none came. Japanese food traditional comes with green tea, but ours was missing. We both asked for tea, but the waiter delivered only one.
The fish is great, but there are other Japanese restaurants

Good Food, Good Vibe – Volcano roll was great and beer prices are very reasonable. $15 for a pitcher of Kirin, Hoegarden or others.
Prices are very reasonable and the staff is attentive. Would definitely go again.
great sashimi – This place is great--fish is always fresh, almost all of the chef specials (definitely check out the seafood dynamite) are super tasty. Service is nice and friendly and the sake menu is wonderful. Not too crowded and the ambience is really inviting. I've definitely had my fair share of mediocre sushi in new york so if you want some quality, come here.
Give it a try – I was out last week and got lured into this restaurant by seeing a sign 'free house sake w/any order.' I figure you can't really go wrong w/free alcohol so I figure I'd give this place a try.
The kitchen menu wasn't that big and since the place was pretty quiet, I asked if the chef could make me some of his specialities. They were kind to oblige and I (and my date) ended up with a glorious array of appetizers - FYI, the seafood dynamite was AWESOME! The portion was actually HUGE.
Give the place a try, it can't hurt - especially since they're new and they're promoting their place by giving out freebies like alcohol and even appetizers!!
Superb sushi on the LES... – Introduced to this place by a friend, and have had two very pleasant meals here. Attentive service, with delicious special rolls. We shared the Tuna Amazing, Lower East Side, and Black Angel this evening all of which were exquisite. Plus their draft beer was on promotion, $3 for a large glass of Hoegarden.
I have been waiting so long for a good sushi restaurant in my neighborhood, it's here. Jin is just right. The sushi was delicious, as were the other dishes. The salmon tartar was great. Our whole meal was the best quality and we will definitely make it a weekly spot. They have good specialty sake drinks. I highly recommend this place.
Delicious sushi at a convenient location – I have been to Jin sushi numerous times and the sushi is always fresh. I love the atmosphere with the natural brick walls and high ceiling plus ambient music. The entrees they give you a big portion and oh so yummy but my fav. is of course the sashimi and sushi. It just melts in your mouth! haha... I would totally recommend the place... they deliver too... I'm feeling hungry already... =)
They serve beer & sake now! =D
hands down the worst sushi I've ever had – They clearly skimped on buying good quality fish as the sushi was tasteless. The salmon tasted like the tuna which tasted like the yellowtail. You can't shortcut quality and they clearly do. The hot dishes weren't much better as they were all poorly prepared, bland or overcooked, and underseasoned. The service was terrible as well as the appetizers came out when the sushi did and were lukewarm at best. The whole point of ordering edamame is to snack on something before the other dishes arrive. Bottom line, go to a real japanese place rather than this imitation.
Great Sushi in the Lower East Side. – Jin opened a few months ago around the corner from me. The first thing I thought to myself was "Oh great, another restaurant. Just what we need." After opening, I decided to try it, since I love sushi and Jin is a sushi bar. The first thing I noticed about Jin was its beautiful decor; Think House of Blue Leaves from KillBill Vol. 1. Immaculate dining room with the sushi bar right in the middle of the restaurant. My friend and I were one of three tables on a quiet evening. Hot Tea was brought to us immediately along with the menu. The best part about Jin is that they have a lot of entrees in addition to their extensive sushi and roll list. I like sashimi, especially when it is cut thick and I was very pleased to see that Jin serves it's sashimi very thick. It's very, very fresh fish. The salmon sashimi was delicious. The rolls I ordered were also excellent. I believe I tried the spicy tuna roll and the yellowtail jalapeno roll. Jin offers fresh, large pieces of sushi and rolls at a very reasonable price. If you're been to Yoshi on Houston St, I would recommend converting to Jin. Better sushi, better ambience, better service than any other LES sushi restaurant. Also, they play satellite radio in Jin, so you'll be treated to some awesome music. Biggest drawback is their BYOB policy, but that's hardly a problem if you know that ahead of time. They also offer a fantastic lunch special with discounted sushi and sashimi. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out on some excellent food.
Editorial Review – The Lower East Side gets a BYOB sushi den with an $80 omakase menu.
