COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE – We arrived 10 minutes early to meet friends who were staying at the hotel. The greeter in the lobby bar stood in our way to block our entry. I asked for a phone, and called our friends to let them know we had arrived. Then I asked to be seated. The greeter showed us to a seating area only after quizzing us as to who our friends are: what are their names? How do they spell their names? He was both obsequious and obnoxious. I am glad I went as I got to see my friends, but they have been having similar experiences there. We agree that we will not return. Comfort and ease are what we want. Ill mannered staff decline to provide that experience.
Moron Bald Host – Hey idiots - if all your tables are open, don't tell me they are reserved for guests. It's bad business, plain and simple.

Too cool for anybody --- don't waste your time. – I was born and bred in New York and never saw a place trying soo hard to be soo cool. We went on Saturday night (10 people) and tried to get in for drinks. The place was probably half filled and the bouncer, behind his velvet rope (shocker), turned us away. Will never try again, of course, who would? Just can't figure out what brainchild would turn away 10 people for drinks in an half filled bar, in this economy, to look what? cool? exclusive?
To cool for school – Flat out bad!! From the bellboy to the front desk I felt like I was competing for who was coolest and who could do the least. Nice design, style and appointments, but outside of that the staff is a joke, management an even bigger joke. Restaurant is about the same as the hotel. I don?t think our server could tell us what prosciutto is or what animal it even came from let alone explain anything on the menu. It was a good attempt to copy the likes of Balthazar, Otto restaurants where servers actually get taught what the food is!! They spent a whole lot of money making it look like an old Italian trattoria, which they did a pretty good job, unfortunately they forgot to add a staff and food to the restaurant. I would recommend sticking with the restaurants mentioned above and go to one of the hundred other high end hotels in the area (aka. Mercer Hotel, SohoGrand etc.) I would skip this one unless you want to feel like the staff is trying to prove how cool they are to you throughout your stay.
Horrible boring place, rude staff – Dong go, stay away, staff rude and bizaar, they prefer only hotel guest!! so why no lock your front door!!!

Turned away from Restaurant and Hotel Bar – Unless you're a guest and white, don't bother. My date and I went to the Hotel Bar around 11 pm this past Saturday. We were stopped in the lounge area and told we would not be able to go to the bar, they were at capacity and the lounge/bar was for guests only. My friend kept walking and looked inside only to notice that the lounge was no where near full capacity. When called to speak with a manager, his response was that the lounge/bar are for guests who spend "A LOT OF MONEY TO STAY AT THE HOTEL." He then backtracked to add that unless they are not at full capacity will they let "outsiders" in. Least to say, that was a lie because they were not full at all. Also went to the restaurant a couple months ago on a Monday night at 10 pm and we were turned away because we were dark skinned. The host and hostess turned their backs to us when we walked in and refused to acknowledge us. When we finally did force them to acknowledge us, they said they were overbooked and could not accommodate us (on a Monday night no less) - ignoring that the restaurant was half empty. The same manager had no resolution for the matter. Unless you're a guest and white, don't bother. Like the manager said, they cater only to people who spend a lot of money to stay at their hotel. How sad. DISGUSTED!
Rude service – The place is oddly set up with a large table service area out front and a tiny bar area tucked around the back. My boyfriend and I dared to step foot outside the bar and take our drinks into the table service area to look around and enjoy the scene. Immediately, we were approached by a very rude little man who said that we weren't allowed to be there and ordered us to leave and step back inside the bar. It was very strange. So then we asked if he could let us know when a table opened up. We went back inside the back area, ordered another round, and never heard from the staff again. As we were leaving, we noticed that the place was half empty with plenty of available tables, but were never notified. Of course, we had been banished to the back area bar, so we weren't able to go out and look for ourselves to see that that place was dead. The policies at this place are just plain strange, but the staff apparently really enjoy enforcing them. Definitely not worth the $15 drinks.
Beautiful decor, horrible management – An interesting experience, to say the least. The decor of the bar is absolutely gorgeous and they have a fantastic outside seating area. The drinks, however, are way over priced and the service is a bit lacking. In total, we had 3 different servers which made for an interesting bar tab when we were finally settling up. Knowing that the drinks were expensive, me and my friends took note of the prices on the menu when we were ordering. I ordered a $12 vodka drink and someone else ordered a $16 glass of scotch. When the bill came, I was charged $14 for one drink and $15 for another (same exact drink, mind you) and the scotch was $17. Out of curiousity, I asked our last waitress why there were the differences. She blamed it on the fact that we had 3 different servers and they all put the orders in differently. I didn't buy this...being that HOW differently could the orders be put in...it was straight forward...a vodka with club soda, Dewars on the rocks with a splash of club soda and a beer. Our second to last server came out to explain that there was an ice charge. An ICE CHARGE?!?!? Have you EVER heard of anything so ludicrous? And why was the ice $1, $2 and $3 for different drinks? Of course, we asked them to take off the ice charges as we weren't going to pay them. It took some time for them to sort this all out, but needless to say, I will NEVER go back there. Charging for ICE? You have GOT to be kidding me! But to be sure, we stopped in to another bar just to ask the bartender (who has been a bartender for quite some time) if he had ever heard of an establishment charging for ice and he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
Excellent – A fantastic place for a date or whatever. A dopey staff BUT great management makes up for it. Shit*y bar but a great outdoor space. OPT for a room with a patio
Fantastic decor, terrible attitude – First of all the decor is completely reminiscent of old New York -- it feels like an antique lodge. We loved this! HOWEVER the attitude of the staff and the management leaves much to be desired. When we first arrived my wife and her friend went to the restroom -- as my friend and I waited for them to come out we were ID'd by the bartender. I showed my ID & my wife's (I was carrying it for her). My friend ordered a patron margarita with pineapple juice as a substitute for sour mix. the bartender turns around and says "So basically you just want tequila and pineapple juice". My friend says no, he wants what he asked for. (I should mention that all 4 of us are bartenders.) When the bartender chuckled (in a snotty, know-it-all kind of way) and repeated himself, I said "No, he wants tequila, triple sec, lime juice and pineapple juice. A margarita with pineapple instead of sour." At this point a man at the end of the bar (who I can only assume is the manager) points at us while in other people's company and loudly commands the bartender "make sure you ID them" while our ID's are still on the counter. This man had watched us come in, get ID'd, order drinks and then decided to be truly rude and announce that we need to be ID'd AGAIN. I'm 39, my friend is 34, my wife and her friend are 28. We were well-dressed for my wife's birthday and all of us had only had 2 glasses of wine at 5 points (fantastic by the way) for dinner. We finished our drinks and asked for our tab (4 drinks in total: 1 margarita, 1 beer, 1 shot, 1 vodka/cran) which came to $48 and I tipped $8. $2 per drink While we gathered our belongings the bartender slammed his hand on the bar and said, "Yeah, thanks" -- with an inflection reserved for bad tippers. I don't know what he is used to but among 4 bartenders w/about 35+ years of bar experience between us, we can all say that $2/drink is generous and appropriate. I am shocked & disappointed by the service and attityde at the Bowery Hotel.
