To say that my experience at Luxor Lounge was terrible is a gross understatement. First off, the implication of "luxury" is laughable. The tables and seats are sticky, the dark lighting rivals the most obnoxious of Abercrombie and Fitch stores, and the basement-style layout is cramped and claustrophobic.

Upon being seated, our lovely waitress unenthusiastically took our drink order and scurried away. She returned a few minutes later and proceeded to spill two brimming daquiris directly on top of my friend, drenching her pants and shoes in the icy concoction. It was a disaster. Daquiri coated our table, the floor beneath us, and my friend. Without saying a word, our waitress vacated. About ten minutes later she finally came back. She returned bearing three napkins and a half-assed mumble of an apology. She set the napkins on the table and took off again! We were left to clean the mess she had made! About twenty minutes later our waitress FINALLY replaced the drinks she had spilled, the table and floor still sticky from her blunder.

When it came time to pay the bill, it was in full, with an added 20% gratuity. I told the waitress I did not feel comfortable paying for the drinks in light of my friend's damaged pants, shoes, and experience. She took my bill and marched away wordlessly. Ten minutes later she returned with her manager. He was very rude, and if there had not been witnesses, I quite honestly think he might have killed me. "It was a mistake," he kept repeating. Yeah, a mistake we had to pay for and will continue to pay for in dry-cleaning bills. He refused any common courtesy or decency. I will NEVER return to this establishment. This was—HANDS DOWN—the worst NYC service experience I have ever had. Thanks a lot, Luxor Lounge, you just lost four potential returning customers.

The hookah was mediocre and the service was terrible. Our waitress was rude and lazy and I thought that the owner was going to punch my friend when she said something about it. The drinks were overpriced and we were forced to give 20% gratuity when the waitress truly did not deserve a cent of our money.

Liked it then, still like it now. – I took an unexpected trip to the Luxor Lounge a few years ago, and I enjoyed my visit, so I went back last night. First off, I don't know what bouncer everyone is talking about, there was no one. I'm guessing the place is a madhouse on Fri/Sat., so maybe they need one then? Secondly, they have signs up that say the bathrooms are for customers only, and you need ID, so don't try marching in there like a total a-hole expecting them to just take it. Be nice!

I was surprised by the renovations, which seemingly cut the original lounge in half, but it still retains it's coziness despite being small. It undoubtedly gets crowded on busy nights, so watch out during peak hours Fri/Sat or you might get squished. The decor was relaxed and the seating comfortable (but somewhat sparse once all the Valentines started coming through the door), the music a mix of modern electronica, hip-hop/reggae, and some Eastern selections, creating a chill and sociable atmosphere. Our waitress checked our ID's as soon as we sat, and took some sort of notes on them, so I doubt I would've been served any liquor. Still, there's a one drink minimum and plenty of non-alcoholic drinks to choose from. I'm a picky eater, and although I didn't eat anything because I had eaten already, I was tempted to order something due to their somewhat "Americanized" selection. The hookahs were very nice, good quality tobacco, the coals didn't ruin the flavor, and we were served what we asked for promptly despite the fact that there were only two people running the place.

On the busy nights, you may only be allowed to stay for an hour (for capacity reasons obviously), some of the minimums go up slightly, and arriving with a large group may incur other fees. Their selections of tobacco flavors (I recommend Mint if you like hookah) and alcoholic beverages are pretty good, and I believe drinks are a dollar cheaper some nights if you pay with cash. I'm not sure if that was a Valentine's Day special or something, but regardless don't be afraid to rub some elbows! I would recommend you give this place a try. :D

Great Place – I'm not too sure why a lot of people are giving bad reviews for, every time I go there I have a blast. All the employees are great and the owner is always there making sure everything is ok. The only issue I had with the place was its nasty bouncer but last weekend when I went I found out he no longer worked there. Thank God, he was such a jerk, every time he checked my ID he blew his cigarette smoke in my face. The waitresses that work on the weekend are so friendly and very attentive. I would definitely disregard these bad reviews and give Luxor Lounge a try.

stay away from this place – First let me start by saying the pictures are all bogus. The 1st one isnt even luxor!! All the others are from atleast 2 years ago b4 they renovated. I have been to luxor several times over the years and it has gotten worse, especially since the owners son took over. Recently a few freinds of mine decided they wanted to smoke so i decided to give luxor one last shot and took them there. Boy was that a mistake!! First, we asked the bouncer if we had to pay a cover. He said no but informed us that their was a $10-$15 minimum per person depending on where we sat. It struck me as odd but he explained that they had done renovations. My freinds agreed so he checked our id's and gave us this stupid unhappy face stamp. That shoulda been a warning as to what was to come!! The place was way to dark and didnt have proper ventilation. The 2 waitreses were sitting at the bar talking and smoking. None even attempted to seat us, to involved in there own convo. Finally 1 girl came and seated us. It was a friday nite around 11 and the place was pretty empty save for a bunch of kids drinking!! The owners son was sitting down with them Bsing! After we sat it took the girl another 10-15 minutes to come ask if we were ready to order and she did it with an attitude! We all decided to take the high road and not complain. Some of my freinds decided to go for a smoke outside and the waitress followed them out and told the bouncer to watch them cause they just orderd and hadnt paid yet. That was uncalled for. They asked the bouncer about the 4 shots for $10 and he told them it was at the bar so ask the waitress if they can have them at the table. Instead my freinds just decided to go to the bar and ask the bartender. The bartender caught an attitude with them!! She was rude, unprofessional, and just plain nasty for no reason!! Then when she poured the drinks they gave her $10 and she said "no its $12". They asked why and she said 15% gratuity on all drinks at the bar!! Ive never even heard of that BS!!! We decided at that point to cancel our hookah order, finish our drinks and leave asap. When we called our waitress over she seemed annoyed that we were cutting in to her BS time with the bartender and came over with an attitude again. We asked her for the check. It took her another 10 minutes to give it to us and she didnt say thank you. Another surprise awaited us when we got the check to see that a 20% service charge was added to the bill which again we were not informed of. Im a big tipper, but the girls there didnt deserve a tip! They were terrible servers, the drinks were weak, they were miserable and had attitudes for no reason and one of my freinds orderd a jack and coke and swears that it wasnt jack! It seems as if they are pouring well liquor into top shelf bottles and charging for it!! We left pretty pissed. Since a month ago when this all happened ive spoken to several people that i know go there and they all said they had similar experiences there as of late. I suggest you go to any hookah bar but luxor lounge. The hookahs arent that great anymore and they have a B rating from the dept of health so i wouldnt eat there. The service is the worst ive seen with the girls having attitudes and acting like they run the place, especially the bartender whom im told goes by the name T so as not to refer to her as the black girl. The owners son allows NYU kids, under age, to drink all nite!! In fact, i had my first underage drink in this stinkhole!! I second danid26 in his post that they con u and rip u off and like i stated b4, my freind is positive they r using well liquor in the top shelf bottles!! Im sorry i gave it another shot! By the way, 4 shots of well liquor for $10 is not a deal! You can prob get the bottle of well they use for less then $10 at the store! This used to be one of my favorite spots. But after the BS the last couple of times, i will never go there again!!!

They Conned us - DONT GO THERE! – I went to the Luxor lounge last night with a friend of mine after sitting at another bar nearby. We sat down and got a hookah. The waitress asked if we also wanted anything to drink. Since we both just had a few beers somewhere else, we were cool with just the hookah. After bugging us a few times about the drinks, she comes up to us and says " you know there's a 15 dollar minimum per person?". Now, if she had told us about this from the very beginning I'd be cool with that. But since we already got the hookah and have been sitting there for a while, she put us in a situation where we were obligated to pay more than we Intended. She turns over the menu and shows me that is says "$15 minimum" in fine print in the back. Now that's some straight up BS. There was no way for us to see that. With my friend being uncomfortable with the situation and all we decided to get drinks anyway. So we sat there for a bit with our drinks and then she comes up to us and asks if we'd like the check, and I said no, were good for now. Literally trying to get us to leave ( it wasn't that late like they were about to close or anything). Then she asks again and I finally say " alright, we'll take the check" so she comes back after a minute with the check which included a %20 tip!! the total became $41 when in fact the initial total was $34! Now, i might not be the most generous tipper in the world, but i don't see why I should be obligated to give a tip that high to a waitress who didn't do a very good job. I was very close to putting $40 and leaving but she realized it before we were out the door and told my friend that there's money missing. So my friend gave her a 20 dollar bill, and was expecting to get 19 dollars back right? (the total was 41) wrong! she gave him only $16 back . My friend looked at the change for a sec and when he realized it, he approached the waitress with an "excuse me, I think.." and before he was able to complete the sentence she ran back and got him the rest of the change he deserved. Now either she has telepathic powers or she just realized that she was caught giving the wrong change. For some reason I tend to believe the latter.

To sum it up, LUXOR LOUNGE IS FULL OF SH*&T.

if you want to go to a hookah bar, there are plenty of other decent places that treat their customers with respect. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to spend your night.

WARNING - Violent Bouncer – WARNING - do not go to Luxor Lounge on Macdougal St. I went there last night (May 30, 2009). I went directly to the bathroom.

While I was in there they were harassing my brother to get a drink. He would've got one but decided not to because of the harassment. I got out and we were just going to leave PEACEFULLY. The waitress says I need to get a drink and blocks my walkway, I say we are leaving and try and go around her. The bouncer puts me in a headlock from behind and slams me against a table and then throws me out in a headlock.

Please warn your friends and family and everyone else not to go to Luxor Lounge.

COZY FRIENDLY PLACE – This is a nice place to hang out, very cozy and they played good music. Prices were reasonable as well and they had a crazy selection of flavors. Makes for a good date as the music is not too loud and allows for conversation and the ambiance is really nice. Overall I had a really nice experience here.
