Best lobster roll in San Francisco, period. – I spend mid-May through mid-Oct in midcoast Maine every year. The annual Aug lobster festival
is held about 10 miles away from home. I've had lobster rolls at Red's in Wiscasset, where more than
an entire lobster goes into a roll. Well, the Lobster Shack puts more than the whole tail, properly cooked,
into a roll, surrounded by drawn butter and/or mayo, cole slaw, sweet pickles & chips. The clam chowder
is chock-full of clams & can compete in the chowdah contest in Camden any year. No alcohol for now,
but hey, one can have Capt'n Eli's blueberry pop or organic Maine Root beer from Portland, ME. Please
be realistic: an excellent lobster roll does NOT come at a Mac price, but you can't get lobster at a Shack price
Mmm...lobster rolls...sooo gooood.... – I can?t give a much better review than the above, except to add that merely typing that and thinking about them got me salivating. This place is awesome! As good as, IF NOT BETTER THAN, any I?ve had at fav places in Boston, Maine & Nova Scotia. I know them?s might be fightin? words?;but seriously, if you like lobster rolls or even just lobster, this is the place in SF for you. Also, they have killer chowdah, some great local Maine beers on tap, and excellent crisps served on the side! Oh yeah, the ?Maine? style of lobster roll is my fav; but, if you?re a lobster purest, go for the ?Neked? (replace the "e" with an "a"- darn Citysearch detection of inappropriate words, even when their use is appropriate).
Hmm?think I?ll pick up one for dinner on my way home. :)
Never knew eating lobsters can be so fun! – We ordered the lobster bisque, the fried day boat scallops and the lobster dinner for two. This was my first time eating a whole lobster with bibs and all. I'm use to just having the tail end of the lobster served to me pre-cracked with a pretty bed of sides. So ordering this whole lobster and learning how to eat it was an awesome experience! Yes, you get the juices all over yourself, thats why I recommend wearing the bibs, and yes, it might be hard to get to the meat but it well worth it! This is definitely not a first date kinda of scene...unless you're both in the mood to look messy in front of each other, lobster juice dripping from your mouth and arms and have fun going at it!(the lobster)
I love the ambience of the place. It's really low-key with great customer service. It's a great place to bring your big family and a bunch of your friends and have fun cracking lobsters together!
The lobster bisque was so delicious! We order a cup of it and the portion is quite big. There was chunks of lobster meat in the bisque, I loved that.
The fried day boat scallops were good, too, but not as impressive as the bisque. Unless you like fried foods, I wouldn't recommend it for the price it is. ($16)
The soda fountain selection is different, too. But it's great to see a soda fountain without a Pepsi or Coke in the line. They serve RC cola, Dr. Pepper, Ice Tea, 7up, Squirt and Lemonade. Sweet!
Checking out this place is a must! Only if it's a one time experience.
If you like real east coast seafood – I have to say, I am one of the pickiest seafood eaters on the planet. I have only had lobster once since moving out here............When I first visited the NBLS, I thought to myself that this was just another place pretending to be an east coast place.
Wow, was I wrong. Talking about being right at home...The panic tables, the walls, and even seing lobster traps made me feel like i was right there in New England.
The food was just like restaurant itself..............the chowda, lobster, etc..........try it and you will see for yourself
Lobster Rolls were great! – I was introduced to Lobster Rolls many years ago on the coast of Maine and search for them any time I'm in a coastal city. I found North Beach Lobster Shack and their recreation of the Lobster Roll superb. Casual and friendly, speedy service. I also visited very sophisticated restaurants along Fisherman's Wharf and near our hotel, but none were better than the Lobster Rolls and Clam Chowder at NBLS. We ate them two days in a row. Wonderful food hidden in an obscure place but worth searching it out.
Being a New Englander and all.... – i should know a bit about, "chowdah" and "lobsta" rolls. I'd recommend them both at the North Beach Lobster Shack. The chowda was creamy and full of clams. Most places give you a bunch of filler and not many clams but not the NBLS. You get clams and plenty of them. I had the lobsta roll and that too was fantastic. Nothing but pure Maine lobsta piled high. The staff was very attentive. Next time it's a steamed lobsta for me.
Craving Satisfied! North Beach Lobster Shack is here... – As a regular customer of the Old Port Lobster Shack in Redwood City, my husband and I decided to check out North Beach. While it's a little smaller inside, it's still the real deal from New England.
I was craving their Ipswich full belly clams and they arrived at our table, perfectly crisp and golden. Hubby had day boat scallops, another favorite - grilled with a slight touch of Maine maple syrup. We also split their signature lobster roll - the "naaaked" (city search is not letting me spell it correctly calling it inappropriate!) version served with drawn butter and mayo on the side.
The only drawback was they don't have their liquor license yet so instead of a nice chilled glass of Sauvingon Blanc, we settled for ice tea. The gal behind the counter said it should be here within a couple of weeks. Overall though, there is no other place like this - a real winner!!
Slooooooooooooooooooooooow – I know its a new restuarant but they do have a sister one in redwood city so they should know how to cook by now. They didnt have the lobster bisque or rice. And it look 45 minutes to get our lobsters. Then the owner said sorry and that he owed us one, but that was it. no coupon or discount or incentive to return
Im sure it will get better and the food was good. Id wait a few months before trying this place.
Editorial Review – New England-style seafood eatery features picnic tables, a monster lobster tank and dishes ranging from lobster rolls to boat scallops.
