Not worth it – Judging by the looks, this place should be a gem. But this is really the case of not judging a book by its cover. The tables are extremely cramped together. The couple seated next to us ended up leaving really angry after sending half of their food back. This should have been my clue, but I persevered.
The apps were alright - tiny bruschettas with different toppings were actually pleasant. While the kobe carpacio was a huge disappointment. Now the entrees - beyond generically aweful. I have had better pasta come out of a tin can. The waitress actually came by without asking and told us we should send it back. We did. She was very nice and took half of our meal off the bill, but mentioned that this is something that she's used to by now.
If you like good Italian food, or good food in general, avoid this place like the plague.
SUPPORT A RESTAURANT THAT MISTREATS ITS STAFF? YOU DECIDE! – Dieci has been open for approximately two years. During the past year, four of its staff members have been fired secretly, and without sufficient prior notice. At least three of its staff members have angrily quit as a result of the poor treatment of their friends and co-workers.
A couple of examples:
Two well-meaning and responsible waitresses were axed (literally taken off the books) with no prior warning. As students at local universities, they were left job-less, and consequently, with no stable income to pay their respective rents. When one server calmly informed Dieci's owner that she was forced to file for unemployment, he rescinded the termination and offered her a few much-needed shifts. He promised to contact her to discuss scheduling. In the end, the owner never contacted her.
In another despicable instance, a server was abruptly fired after sustaining undesireable injuries. After attempting to strike a compromise with the owners, she was offered one remaining week at Dieci, where she would train the server replacing her. Understandably, she refused.
Many visitors and New York residents enjoy eating out. They enjoy exploring new restaurants and new foods. However, before you enter Dieci, decide whether you want to support a restauarant that mistreats its staff and adheres to poor business ethics. There are plenty of other good Italian eateries to enjoy a meal at.
Good for Japanese influenced Italian food – Last night I went to Dieci from great recommendations from friends and was not dissapointed. The service was excellent and friendly. The recommendation on the chicken was close to par to what I was expecting. I tried 5 items on the menu and out of those, my favorite was the Crispy Tuna which had an absolutely excellent sauce to dip in and a nice light and spicy slaw to pair. The Aged Prime Angus was also super juicy and cooked to perfection. All the others were nothing spectacular though. Another downside was that the place was basically a hole in the wall where you are seated either corners of the restaurant or on a long table, community style. I would definitely not recommend bringing a group of more than 4 there. All in all, I had a good time and would go back to try a few other items on the menu.
Great Food, Good Looking Space – We were really surprised by the quality of the foo here, especially the pastas. The menu is mostly small plates styles which gives the opportunity to try many different things. Service is attentive and the space is cute, though I could see it getting cramped on busy nights. Will definitely recommend to friends.
Best risotto and pasta! – I love this little tiny Italian place. Great atmosphere. Although people can get really close each other due to a limited space, customers here are really civilized, showing respect to the young chef' (you can see him in the kitchen), and they are just simply there to enjoy the great food. We started the night with specials, carpuccio with argula (but really the leaves were Japanese vegetables, crown daisy), and the creamy, handmade fetuccine with green peas, like hand picked right out of farm, both fabulous! Also, black squid risotto was amazing, can't taste so mature and decadant like that even at the best Italian places around the city. I thought their only Merlot (glass $10) was full-body, sophisticated, matched all the food we tasted. Yes, don't expect big portion, but you can taste everything you want to try as each dish cost less than $10 or little over for main dishes. We had to find out about their dessert , mille feuille, with fresh fruits and cream, what a way to celebrate the Friday evening. The only downside was they didn't serve espresso though the machine was there. Overall, I loved the casual, tapas bar-like atmosphere, and defintely want to go back!
Modernist, Asian style meets the flavors of Italy at this cheap and chic East Village hideout. – The Scene
The East Village's sleek set mingles at this underground black box where sophisticated Italian fare is served on minimalist, Asian-influenced square plates. Half wine bar, half tables, the room provides a seamless backdrop for candlelit late-night chatting and glimpses into the miraculously quiet open kitchen. A black chalkboard filled with daily specials serves as the decor's centerpiece.
Artful Italian tapas arrive at tables in carefully measured time, with the lightest courses, like string beans coated sparsely in tomato sauce, arriving minutes before bowls of delicate pasta, including a subtle and savory lamb Bolognese. The tender Angus steak is tasty but commonplace. More unique is the decadent squid ink risotto, in which buttery black sauce dramatically covers soft rice and seared squid. Dessert options are few, but the smaller-than-average slice of chocolate cake and its accompanying banana ice cream are simple enough to please most palates.
New breed of Italian Food in NY! – This was the best Italian I had in NY!!! The portion is small but reasonably priced. It only means you can explore new dish without paying more or wasting food. I don't know much about wine but they seem to select white wines that pairs very well with their food. Both light and very delicate. My friend and I had: octopus salad, croquette with tomato sauce, crostini with truffle paste, angel hair pasta with italian sausage, squid ink risotto, and homemade cheese cake with pineapple sauce. Although I love and highly recommend this place it is probably not a place to please everyone. If you are familiar with rich, sometimes heavy Italian food (and that's probably the authentic way) this is not your place. One way to find out: if you like red wine with Italian food, you will be happy dining elsewhere.
A new type of midterranean tapas in the east village – Every dish comes in a small plate with a ?small? price tag. The squid ink risotto was amazing! It was creamy and delicious. I could have ordered three all for myself. I also liked their sardine dish and baked sliced potatoes. The banana ice cream that was on top of the chocolate cake was absolutely delicious!!
Great wine and food – Try this little Italian place if you want to explore interesting Italian wines and small plates. Dieci is more like a wine tapas bar rather than a restaurant, yet you can still get full with great food. Try their trippa, which is served with red cabbage that makes it sweet. Also, try squid ink risotto, whose heavenly creaminess goes against its color. Don't be afraid of the black ink, which is actually flavorful. The wine list includes Amorones, but try something different here. They have ones from Long Island as well. I cannot remember which one though. I had some fruity white from Long Island, which was a good starter.
Great Food and Friendly Atmosphere! – As a starter we ordered the berkshire belly, which was cooked tender and flavorful. The lamb pasta was simply delicious. Even for those who don't care for lamb, I would recommend it. And the beef dish was also great with a reasonable price. For the same quality at other "trendy" steakhouses, the price would be as twice as much. They have an interesting wine selection, a combination of Italy and Long Island. I wanted to see more desserts though; there were only two. I like the chocolate cake, which was served with banana ice cream (or gelato).
