I never get weary of the neighborhood vibe of this place. The wine selection is stellar and the advice top-notch.
Chill vibe, cool people, great time – I've driven by this cute wine bar several times, thinking, "I need to try it," and am glad I finally got a chance to this past Tuesday for their famous Tuesday cupcake pairing. They pair a cupcake with a small pour of wine for $10, a nice indulgence, and a great excuse for some 1 on 1 time with a friend. I arrived while it was still light outside and stayed until the sky turned dark. While it's light outside, you can see all varied paint colors (greys, peaches, seafoam green) on the walls. The bartender, a girl, was gorgeous and knowledgeable. Thanks to her, I tried a really light and fruity sparkling Austrian apple wine, the Apfel Cuvee, a perfect summer sip. The little bites were great; a plate of cheese, some yummy olives, almonds that you could munch on while sipping and chatting. I sat at the bar and was able to share in the chatter of some of the regulars and resident foodies who come every Tuesday for the cupcakes. Fun, fun. By nightfall, the candles light up and the warm glow of the lights gives the wine bar a cozy intimate feeling. The perfect place for a tete a tete, I like the relaxed environment, and the fact that it is not so packed that you can still hear yourself talk. I will definitely be back.
Mike really gets it! – We love this place! The wine selection is excellent and affordable. Our first time there, Mike, the owner, offered us multiple tastings before we made up our minds on a bottle. We've been several times since, and seen the wine list change and diversify. Mike is very knowledgeable and has continued to be very helpful. The rest of his staff is perhaps not as motivated or passionate about what they do. The food selection is very enjoyable. There is an increasing number of items to choose from, all very well executed. They choose fine ingredients, and keep the selection simple, sticking to what they know best, with flavors truly reminiscent of Europe. And serving wine at 13 Celsius makes perfect sense in Houston! The decor adds to the charm of this place, although the outside seating is very inviting! Caroline Street is relatively quiet, something rare at other outside venues in Houston. In general, the place is busy enough to be lively, but not so packed that you can't get seating or service. We will definitely spread the word!
Excellent wine bar with a classic European feel but with local comfort and friends – I've been going to 13 Celsius, a trendy yet laid-back european wine bar, for a little over a year now. I first found out about it in the Midtown Newsletter via e-mail and was among the first to venture out with friends to the tucked-away location that is very convenient yet several blocks away from the packed & boisterous part of Houston Midtown that most people are familiar with.
The wine list is very impressive although if you're overwhelmed, the extremely friendly & social staff members are always happy to ask a few questions about your tastes in order to lead you in the right direction. When I'm not in the mood for a glass of wine, my favorite options are either their unique beer selection or their very popular sangria. I actually haven't tried the coffee or tea selection, but judging by the amount of activity I see from the coffee maker, they have some popular hot drinks as well. If you're hungry, there's a deli with fresh meat & cheese selections that are regularly changing along with a variety of dessert specials.
Not to toot my own horn too much (toot toot!), but the customers are always great and very friendly. It's generally locals like myself from midtown or surrounding areas. If you go enough, you can pick up on an eclectic crowd of regulars that have made 13 Celsius their regular hang-out spot. If you're in the mood for chatting with some randoms, it's amazing who you come across and it's never hard to find good conversation.
13 Celsius tends to do pretty brisk business on weekday evenings and gets pretty busy Thursday - Saturday as you might imagine. However, it's usually possible to snag one of the uber-comfortable booths, but there are also great alternatives at the huge bar or outside in the courtyard (back) or the front on a quiet street.
Nice architecture, nice wine, and nothing else. – I was underwhelmed by my visit to 13 Celsius, perhaps because of all of the hype I had heard and read prior to my visit. Yes, the architecture is interesting and "preservation-mod cool." They left the cieling and walls and floors "untreated" to preserve the character of the drycleaners it was once. Too bad it is probably just as loud now as it was then, too. My wife and I visited on a Friday evening after dinner. Place was packed with lots of loud talkers in "business casual" trying to be heard over the tinny music with no bass sound (we heard a lot of high-hat and snare, with the occasional yelled lyric). The lack of soft surfaces turns the place into a hard amplification chamber. The bar staff reflected the hard surface of their workspace - no engagement, no warmth, no interaction even to check how we were doing. Not at all what I had expected or hoped for. I won't go back, despite (or because of) how much I loooked forward to liking the place I had heard so much about. Maybe the name of the place reflects one's reception - cool, too cool.
Great place for small office party! – The wife and I went out exploring one night and came across this cozy little wine bar. We stayed for a couple of hours at the bar and the staff was tremendously friendly and the recommended wine was great! Now we've been to a couple of local wine places and this one just felt right to us. Unfinished walls, exposed bricks, nice lighting and the background music was lively without being overpowering.
We had so much fun that I called up a friend of mine who was trying to coordinate a little office happy hour the next week and told him this was the perfect place.
The next Friday our little team came out and everyone was impressed with the place. Not pretentious, had friendly service, worked hard to accomodate our group of about 15 folks. Exeryone commented how great the service was and asked how anyone knew about this place.
In fact a few of us got to hang out in the courtyard when the happy hour was dying down and enjoy a rare cool spring evening here in Houston.
Love the place, love the wine and the beers went over well with the team also. Only drawback is what I'd consider a limited food selection. So you may want to eat first and then go there if you're really hungry. I do wish the selection includeda few more South African wines(maybe a nice Pinotage). Otherwise - enjoy!
Great new spot! – This is a nice new spot in Houston. I decided at the last minute to throw a wine-tasting party for my boyfriend, and the owner was extremely accomodating. A wine tasting typically takes a week to prepare, but he was able to get things together in one day! Everyone was impressed and we had a great time! Please visit this new spot...you will not be disappointed!
Doesn't feel like Houston. – I love that' it's "hidden". It can get a bit noisy becasue of maintaining the integrity of the building but the wine selection is outstanding and Ian is the best kind of proprietor. I'll bring my "big city" firends here any time! Hurry though because once the word gets out, good luck getting a seat.
just opened – Just opened but had a good experience. The atmosphere is nice. Lots of plush couches vs the usual hard wood chairs in wine bars. The list is already looking decent. The truffle cheese was fabulous. Although and we got a corked bottle of wine they claimed was just an ?unusual? bottle from the case. But all in all a nice hang out spot. They also offer sandwiches and beer if your not in the mood for vino.
Amazing cappuccinos! – I love this new spot! I especially like their cappuccinos and go back at least 3-4 times a week. They also have free wireless internet access so I can bring my laptop and do some work over a nice glass of wine and a cheese sampler.
LOVE IT! – As a couple who love wine and are known to frequent wine bars... we have enjoyed becoming regulars here! The fabulous service, wine selections, amazing food and relaxing atmosphere keep us coming back for more. Try the torta - it is out of this world!
This Midtown wine bar and retail shop stores its wine in an actual cellar, maintained at 13 degrees Celsius. – In Short
Housed in a 1920s Mediterranean-style building in Houston's bustling Midtown district, 13 Celsius is modeled after the cozy wine bars and hangouts of Europe. There's an al fresco courtyard, a long white marble bar and a windowed-wine cellar stocked with a great selection of limited-production wines. They also serve fine meats and cheeses, plus fresh espresso.
