Best Umbrella Drinks Ever! – I have wanted to try this place for a long time based on the recommendations of friends. From the outside, it looks like a tacky little storefront, but once you open the door, you step into a tropical paradise and could be anywhere warm and breezy. The decor is great, they have every "umbrella" drink you've ever heard of, and give a very nice history and description of each, and the bar snacks may not be very diverse, (tropical fare, the pu-pu platter is really big and really great) but this place delivers what it promises, a tropical getaway. Service was great too. I read some other reviews that kinda dissed the place, and I have to say they must be old or maybe the reviewers had different expectations than me, but as for me, I'll be back and I'm telling all my friends to go too!!!
A step into another world – The made-from-scratch tropical cocktails, like the house mai tai was so tasty! Not too sweet, but just the right amount of rum & juices. Found out Mondays in "Mai Tai Monday" which means their $8 cocktail is now $5 all night! What a deal! We had their vegetarian egg rolls and it was very good. We both wished they had a better menu.
We will go back! Great vibe, staff was friendly & such a nice break from the everyday work world. Dark, tropical, mysterious & of course great drinks!
Always Good – I have always found the staff to be friendly. For those complaining earlier, I know they have changed some staff. The grumpy old guy is gone. The food is the fried, got a buzz on munchies. Happy hour is great. A couple of their Mai Tai's, and it's best to think about walking, not driving home.
Rude, terrible service, and overpriced--4/24/10 – Our bartender was so rude, we will never be back. She was yelling from behind the bar about a concert at the place next door saying..."Those Christians are rocking out again, can we turn up the music on here?!?" Regardless of the religious or non-religious band next door, this was completely inappropriate and uncalled for to be yelling across a bar full of people who just wanted to enjoy their drinks. On top of that, she was very very rude, and did not even attempt to smile, or ask us how our drinks were, etc. She also let us sit at a dirty table that was sticky the whole time, after saying she'd "wipe it off for us when she could." Being in the restaurant industry for years, I looked around to try and see if she had a lot of drinks to make, etc because it took her so long to even say hi to us at our dirty table. Everyone had drinks, and a lot of people were even cashed out waiting to leave, and she was just standing behind the bar complaining. She was NOT busy. Great atmosphere, but unfortunately we will not be back due to the overpriced drinks and very rude bartenders.
Changes – We've gone to Thatch many times over the past couple of years, and always had a good time, and frequently recommened it to friends. The atmosphere is cozy, no TV, no video poker, and lots of good tiki decor. We particularly liked the eclectic drinks on the menu, like the ones with cucumber and fresh squeezed juices. The last time we went, we found that Zorn, the bartender who'd been there since they opened, had 'moved on'. His name is still on the menu, however, as he designed some of their signature drinks. We ordered a couple of our favorite drinks, and they were served up promptly by the perky bartender, but they were no longer the good drinks we'd had before, both of them were too sweet/sour without any hint of good rum. Some of the juice in our drinks was poured out of a plastic gallon milk-type jug, so maybe they're not doing fresh squeezed juices anymore either. The food's always been limited, so without the great drinks, it's not really worth it anymore.
TERRIBLE Service! Get double charged for your drink! – Loved the atmosphere, super tiki aloha!
The service SUCKED! We got double charged, fought it out with the bartender over the cost of the beverage (he was wrong by double charging us), ordered a tiki mug got double charged, waited over 20 minutes for our full food / drink order (there was maybe 6 other people there), and then got double charged at the very end of our bill for the meal, AGAIN... Twice with the double charging.. Really, your drinks are not that strong...
F- YOU Thatch! You are running a SCAM!
We had a great time – The service was very casual but excellent. It is a fun venue. Every time I go we are generally with a large party and they never bat an eye about separating the checks. The food is limited but very tasty and every time I bring some one new to Thatch they have good time.
Lousy service – I went there because the bartender was smoking outside and solicited me to come inside. I was looking for food but was disappointed to see they only had lousy fried bar food. The only reason I stayed was because it was happy hour. After being served (at the bar) I was promptly ignored so that the bartender could bullsh*t with his fellow employee. I was out to celebrate that I got a job but the bartender could care less. I'm not the kind of person who needs to chat all about my personal life but have never been to a bar where the bartender was so utterly disinterested in his customers. I was not impressed, although I might go back just because the drinks were really strong and cheap during happy hour, otherwise, I will be sure to steer clear of this place.
Fun time – I've come in several times on a Sunday night to find many locals and regulars. That's a good sign in my book. The bartender takes the time to welcome everyone even if she's busy.
We recently brought some friends from out of town and fortunately the good service and vibes were still there. The bartender made some drink suggestions for each of us and it wasn't all about the money. The place got busy and even though we had to wait for service the people there really kept us in conversation and made it fun. My friends really liked this place.
Glad it lived up to all our hype.
never again – I must tell you, I love this place. It's in my neighborhood and it's a pretty quiet place to have a cocktail and a conversation. THE PROBLEM IS ACTUALLY GETTING A COCKTAIL. I was joined at Thatch by some friends recently and we didn't get the cocktails we ordered nor did the semi-regular bartender make any attempt to rectify the situation. We were served the wrong drinks and basically told to deal with it. I was mortified.
The food has greatly improved and if they could get the service down. Thatch could be a great place. However, as of now, it's not even pleasant.
