AWFUL! – DON'T BOTHER getting this delivered. I placed an order and did not receive it until an hour later and it was awful; the order was wrong, the fries and cheese were cold and the bread was soggy. (Too soggy to even cut in half, everything just fell apart.) When I called to complain, the woman said they would not reimburse me but would replace the order. I asked that it be delivered as soon as possible since I had already waited an hour. She told me it would arrive "between 10-15 minutes". When the order arrived over thirty minutes later, it was incorrect again. I called to let them know. THEN ten minutes later the woman called back to tell me that my original order would not be reimbursed because I did not send back the original order. I did send back the original order and after she confirmed with the delivery man, she hung up on me. Absolutely ridiculous. How are these people even in business?
Meat and toppings = Win; Rolls = fail – Close to "Authentic," but not quite.
As a transplant from Philly to NYC, I have been grossly disappointed with what local bars advertise as "Philly" cheesesteaks. My fiancé decided to take me to Shorty's last night b/c I recently had yet another bad cheesesteak experience and was craving something like home.
While the meat and cheese were great and very reminiscent of home, the roll was not even close. Anyone who does even the tiniest bit of research, e.g. ask ONE person from Philly, will quickly learn that a true Philly cheesesteak is always, always, always, served on a very soft roll (many in Philly tend to favor an Amoroso).
The rolls are advertised as being fresh baked from Philly, so I had to ask ... "What bakery are they from?" The answer is none. The bartender told me that they get them from Le Bus, a 1-off restaurant in Manayunk -- a cool, but very hipster town outside of the city. Needless to say, they are not experts on a true Philly cheesesteak (think South Philly), so why get your rolls there? After all, you are SO CLOSE to leaving everyone else in your dust, and the roll is unquestionably the single most vital part of a Philly sandwich.
Conclusion: The closest thing to a "Philly" cheesesteak I've had so far in NYC, but still a bit of a miss.
Shorty's ... while your meat and toppings are delish, start serving them on soft rolls, true to Philly style, and this review will quickly change to a 5-star.
Good Philly Cheesesteak & Bar – I have been wanting to come here to try out their Cheesesteak. Somehow, I feel that only Pat's in Philly can deliver quality cheesesteak sandwiches. However, I am willing to give Shorty's a chance since it is right by my work.
I ordered the Chicken pizza cheesesteak in Shortys size, which costs $7. It took a while because there were a lot of people at the bar but our waitress was very attentive. We did get the Mozzarella triangles for appetizer and gosh it was great! I wish there were more!
When I got my sandwich, it was warm and full of pizza sauce. The chicken was surprisingly tender and juicy. I got the sharp provolone with it and it was definitely pretty strong.
I think I had food coma for the rest of the time at work after that!! I will definitely come try their real cheesesteak next time.
Forget Philly – Who says you have to duplicate the Philly cheese steak to make it great? Instead of the puffed up, tasteless white bread roll of Geno and Jim's, this one comes on a cruncher, more baguette-like roll that adds a nice crustiness to the meat, onions, and cheese wiz. And it's around the corner from Port Authority Bus Station, so you can digest all the way home.
Solid Whiz Wit' – I'm a Philly native and this place does the south philly cheesesteak justice. The key to a great steak is the roll, which can NOT be soggy or soft. A hard italian roll is a must in my opinion, and I do not like the steak chopped too finely or too large.
I ordered the Whiz Wit' and was impressed. Great tasting hard roll that was slightly crispy on the outside. The sirloin was tasty and chopped just right. Cheese whiz is cheese whiz - you can't mess that up. The onions were not overpowering, which is something that can ruin a good steak.
To top it off, they have a solid beer selection: Titan IPA, Alagash and some other different choices were on tap when I was there.
I woulda given them five stars, but have yet to try the Cheesesteak Special (their version of Tony Luke's Steak Italian), which I plan to get next time. This place is just a notch below John's Roast Pork, which any Philly native will tell you is the best ever.
A must stop in Manhattan - strong bet you'll be back – One of my favorite joints in NY. I go there or order them 1-2 times a week and I always bring my visitors to NY there as well (which has been many times and they all loved it too). They have quite a few healthy options (my favorite is broccoli rabe), as well as the unbelieveable cheese steaks, great wings, ridiculous Italian fries, and the addictive Mozzarella Triangles. To me, Philly cheese steaks are like NY pizza in that if you have had either of them in their home city you are always looking for that same pizza/cheese steak score you had burned in your brain that first time - that said, this place is the best cheese steak place outside of Philly, by far (and right up there with the Philly places). Evan (the owner) and his staff are friendly, accomodating, and fun. Good atmosphere. I can't say enough about this place.
This saved my life – The first time I had shorty's was during the inventory week at my job. It was either our usual or trying to see what else they had in the area. And it was so good. We order from there every week but unfortunately we haven't been to the resturaunt itself. But even the guy that takes the phone orders is a sweetheart. We get our food fast and their fries are the "truth" They have so many things to try and if you are someone that is very particular about portions ( which I am not) you can order a shorty which is a half of a cheese steak and it will fill you up the same. All in all the menu sits at the top of the pile at our store.
so good. – I love this place. everything is great. the bread, the steaks, the onion rings, the fries, the beer, the staff...you name it. I crave it often and could eat there more than once a week if i allowed myself!
This Philly guy knows best! – I grew up in center city Philadelphia. I even had a summer job at Pat's King of Steaks when I was in high school. Shorty's is by far and away the closest thing to a real deal cheese steak that NYC has to offer. The ONLY ingredient that makes a cheese steak sandwich authentic is the bread, which Shorty's imports from a bakery in Philly and bakes in their own bread oven. Case closed. I am also a huge fan of their roast pork sandwich, which is also a South Philly staple. That said, I would find it amazing for someone to sink their teeth into a Shorty's cheese steak with wiz (my favorite) , american, or provolone cheese and not freak out over how good it is. I know cheese steaks and these guys do it all right...and the beer selection rocks.
PS - Shorty's has the cleanest bathrooms in NYC.
Great place to eat if you like prison slop – I love cheese steaks to the extent that I will randomly road trip to Philly just to get one from Jim's. When this place first moved into town as Tony Luke's I rushed over to try it. The cheese steak was about as bland as a boiled sand. I decided a 2nd visit was not needed. After many Tony Luke's fans informed me, its all about the roast pork sandwich. Last night on a drunk walk home, I decided it was time to try the roast pork. I ordered a shorty with roast pork and sharp provolone. The guy confirmed with me THREE TIMES that I did NOT want broccoli rabe on the sandwich. When I got home and opended the sandwich, guess what I found on it? Broccoli rabe. I pulled it all off and off with it came the cheese. I took 2 bites and tossed the sandwich in the trash. If you have no respect for cheese steaks or your taste buds, eat em' up. Otherwise take yourself to Carl's or 99 Miles to Philly for cheese steaks in NYC .
