Overpriced, scant menu, terrible service – Our group of six was looking for dinner at 10pm on a Saturday night which is surprisingly harder than it would seem. We stumbled into Vignola, and were pleasantly surprised to find they were still serving. Our waiter took our drink orders, and when we told him we were ready to order, he said, "well I'm not ready yet" and left the table. He came back about 15 minutes later, took our orders with a curt and surly attitude, and left us again for another 15 minutes without bothering to check on us. Not sure what he was doing, as the restaurant was only half full and there were four waiters. He almost took my head off when I held up my wine glass to be filled, snapping at me to "just put it down on the table." Fortuntately for him, it was a good bottle of wine, can't complain about their extensive wine and cheese selections. The menu, however, is a bit sparse and I felt backed into a corner, finally deciding on a pizza which was decent but overpriced. All the meals came at different times, one of our friends who is pregnant asked for the dessert menu, as she wanted chocolate cake for dinner. Our meals came and went and no cake for her. My husband got up to address our waiter's poor service, and found said waiter enjoying a glass of wine in the waitstaff section of the restaurant. I guess the restaurant policy of adding 20% gratuity to all parties of six or more bought him immunity from having to be prompt or pleasant. Will never dine there again, and will make it perfectly clear to all fellow diners to avoid this potentially charming bistro at all costs.

Eat before you go! – I was thrilled to enter this Italian eatery and be seated at a corner table away from drafty entrance on a cold night in February. Little did I know that the lofty space would be just as chilly seated next to the large windows. I had to order a cup of hot water to keep my hands warm! While our waiter graciously tended to his other tables, we were seemingly shunned every time his gaze would turn in our direction. And when he did approach our table,we had the unfortunate displeasure of viewing his behind as he attended the diners seated next to us.

Our appetizers of small baked clams seemed to take on the waiter?s mousey demeanor: cold, bland and a lack of attention to detail. Since our waiter also neglected to bring our complimentary breadsticks and/or ask how our clams were, we spent the next 20 minutes trying to scour for breadcrumbs baked onto the cold clamshells.

The finishing touch to our already unacceptable service was the fact that we were still waiting for our entrees over an hour later. Our waiter finally came over to the table and said our dinners would be right out, but he trembled back to the kitchen after my boyfriend insisted that our entrees be served hot, since our apps were not. Fifteen minutes later and no sign of our waiter or our entrees. It was time to make an exit and try to find a decent meal in Portland, ME before all of the kitchens hunkered down for the night.

While the chef came out to at least apologize and pick up our tab, we left there with grumbling bellies. I have to admit that the food did look appetizing and no one else seemed to be having a similar experience. Vignola probably deserves a second try, but it?s certainly not at the top of my list.
