Happy Hour hang-out spot with friends.. – Kona never fails for happy hour! You do need to be there earlier than the happy hr time because it is elbow to elbow finding a table or even by the bar. For happy hr, their calamari, atlantic roll, avocado wrap, chicken satay and pizza mergharita are the best! and Of course SAKE bomb! For dinner, their salads are all good and my favorite salmon with spinach and steamed veggies are good!
Great Happy hour and Hamachi – Love the crowd at happy hour and the hamachi appetizer will melt in your mouth. Best deal I've ever seen for a sake bomb. Large beer and small sake for $7.50. Can't wait 'til next time.
kona really is one of my favorite happy hour spots... but the downside is that a lot of people think so too so you will have a hard time finding a table. otherwise the food is great the drinks are good and the price is pretty awesome so check it out if you have a chance.
Happy Hour is pretty nice – Their happy hour is pretty nice. They have a reverse happy hour as well, which is convenient if you can't make it to the typical happy hour. Their food is nothing to brag about. Having lived in Hawaii, I knew their take on Hawaiian fusion probably wouldn't bowl me over. Their sushi is well priced during happy hour, but I probably wouldn't go there for it otherwise. Just make sure you get there early for happy hour, or good luck getting seats!
Horrible experience – A friend of mine was having her going away party at Kona Grill and invited approximately 20 people. When I arrived, the majority of our party was already seated outdoors (on the patio) eating and drinking. I sat down and waited to be served. The waitress approached our table and my friend had to remind her of the margarita she ordered but never received and the waitress replied with "oh. I don't think I ever brought that out." When she asked me what I wanted to order I said a water and then she immediately asked me for my ID. I told her I just wanted a water, not a drink, and she told me I still needed to show ID. I am 20 and was planning on eating food while my friends provided Kona with plenty of business buying tons of drinks. The waitress proceeded to tell me I was not allowed to be on the patio after 9pm because it was a bar. I told her because they served food and advertised their establishment as a restaurant that I should be able to stay. I asked for a manager, hoping for a more competent employee. He explained to me that they had had an incident in which underage customers were served alcohol and the restaurant had to fire their bartender. Sounds like the restaurant's problem to me if they were dumb enough to serve underage kids. The manager told me I was allowed to sit inside. What is the difference? Food and drinks are served both inside and out on the patio. He did not offer to move our party's table indoors and explained that the rule of 21+ after 9pm was a mix of restaurant/TABC policy. Apparently (as stated by the manager), TABC has such little confidence in Kona Grill that they continue to check in on the restaurant and "test" them by creating underage drinking scenarios to make sure the restaurant is complying. The manager did not offer me a giftcard or a free meal but instead told me where I was and was not allowed to sit. I told him he just lost a customer and left.
13 People Received Horrible Service from Kona Grill – On 12/03/09 my party of 13 people went to Kona Grill at the Domain for Happy Hour. The temperatures were freezing outside, the outside heaters were not working at full capacity. We asked to be seated inside the dining area and management/and hostess refused to accommodate us. We were told Happy Hour customers had to sit outside as the dining area was not a Happy Hour area location for discounted drinks. We explained many of us would be having dinner, again the Kona Grill refused us - so we called McCormick & Schmidt, they told us to come down the block and they'd take care of us (and they did). Kona Grill obviously didn't want our business. I'd not recommend this place ever again.
Best service I have ever had. – I recently went to Kona because my 7 year old son wanted a sushi roll. I was excited because I used to love the Diablo Shrimp. When I asked about the shrimp I was told it was no longer on the menu. I was disappointed but I just ordered some coffee and let my son enjoy. I was quickly approached by the Manager Scott Mathews and he was asking about me wanting the shrimp. He said that has been off the menu for a year. I told him no big deal to not worry about it. He said they didn't have the ingredients to make that sauce but he would go back and play around with some things to try and get it as close as possible. He came back with a huge plate of Shrimp, very elegently presented. It tasted amazing. The then said that the waitress had asked him if he could do anything. He then presented me with his business card and said if I was ever coming in to email him and he would personally go to the grocery store to get the ingredients needed to make this. WOW... All this to get me an appetizer that is no longer on the menu. I don't remember the waitress' name but between her and the Manager I have never had service like this anywhere. I just want to say thank you. To top it off he came out and said the shrimp dish was on the house. If that is not going above and beyond, I don't know what is. Thank you thank you thank you...
good variety – per other reviews, maybe it's not the best food in the domain but i like the fact that I can get sushi and creme brulee at the same place. it's great for a crowd that wants different things or if you're indecisive like me and not just going for the sushi. again, i'm sure there are better sushi places in austin but i'd recommend if you're an amateur like me and just like the veggie rolls.
Take my advice and go to Jasper's instead.... – I told my husband that we were going to drive north to a place that had a good reputation and as soon as we sat down we knew that this was going to be a place we would walk out of - we were not acknowledged for more than 5 minutes after being seated. We were outside on the patio and it was about 65 degrees outside - very pleasant - but they had all of the outdoor fans on high with the fan lights on as well - it was very windy and distracting. We asked out waiter to turn off the fan above us (pull the string idiot!) and he said that all of the fans in the area were on the same breaker. We got up and left and walked over to Jasper's where we had never been before - take my advice and go to Jasper's - promptly seated, waited upon in a timely manner and the food was fabulous!
