Avoid at all Costs – My girlfriend and I recently moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and decided to go out for a nice romantic dinner and we decided that the meal should be Italian. We chose to go to Fratellos in Brier Creek Commons for our nice evening. What I thought was going to be a nice evening turned out to be a disaster from the moment we walked in the restuarant. We ordered mozzarella caprese salad and that was okay but as the meal went on it got worse. Next, we ordered a caesar salad and it tasted like something out of a brown paper bag that was made 24 hours ago, so we do not recommend that selection. After that we ordered penne alla vodka and that was awful. The pasta was overcooked and sauce tasted like something out of a jar, not to mention if you put both of them together it tasted like cardboard. We opted not to go for dessert and we will never go back there again. If I could have given this place a half of star I would have and this would be very nice of me.
Fratello's misses the mark – We didn't set off to eat here; we were just in the area and remembered that it was a place on our list to try.
Just like another reviewer, we arrived at 5:20, the sign said they opened at 5 and the neon "OPEN" sign was on, but the door was locked. (Edit, I found another review on Chowhound, same problem with the door being locked). After a few minutes I spotted a waitress and knocked. She did apologize for the door being locked - but if this has happened on 3 posted reviews, you really have to wonder.
The menu is strictly old school italian; lasagna, chicken parm, etc. We were dissapointed with the menu prices. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, my wife ordered chicken piccata. They were able to go "off the menu" and accomodate my child's request for penne with butter and parmesean cheese.
They seem to have a fly problem. We counted 3 buzzing around our heads. The other issue is that the place faces west, and has big plate glass windows. The curtains were tied in the middle; no shades - so we were subjected to very bright sun through the meal.
My wife's chicken piccata was pretty good, very tender with a balanced sauce. I make fabulous meatballs, so that's the bar I judge others by. These had very good texture, but no flavor. They were devoid of any seasoning. The pasta was cooked fine, and the sauce was just OK. It did not in any way justify the $14 price tag, even though the portions were huge.
Service was decent, neither rising above nor falling below my expectations.
Neither of us ordered drinks nor dessert, and the bill was $44 before the tip.
I don't see this place surviving without some major changes. They need to figure out who unlocks the door and when, get some shades on those windows, hire an exterminator and halve the portions/prices.
It wouldn't hurt at all to revamp the menu either, It would be a shame too, if this place were to close - nothing I've dinged them on is unfixable and Brier Creek doesn't need another chain.
Great Italian Food. Great Service. Great Atmosphere! – What an excellent meal! Responsive service & perfect ambiance. After reading several less-than-flattering reviews of Fratellos, I felt compelled to offer a different perspective. I'd eaten at the restaurant before and afterwards read the reviews. So, on the second occasion to dine at Fratellos, I notified our waiter, Kenny (a self-proclaimed Boeing Brat from Seattle, WA), that his task for the evening was to refute the prior reviews. To his credit, he was aware of them and provided a credible explanation.
Bad reviews notwithstanding, Fratellos is a "must-do" for any lovers of Italian cuisine. The menu offers a wonderful variety of Italian favorites that are served in portions enough for 2. Add to that, a soothing atmosphere with old standards playing in the background and you've got the makings of a very pleasant evening. Kenny's service was exemplary as he went the extra mile to keep us apprised of the NY Giants/NE Patriots score at acceptable intervals! (He was also sufficiently attentive without being a pain in the tail, if you know what I mean!)
Check it out. I think that you will have a good time!
Fratello's in Brier Creek – I've been to Fratello's a number of times...this past weekend was the worst experience I've ever had, not only at Fratello's but at any restuarant in the area.
Poor Service-- had to ask for refills, some people's plates were cleared off the table while others sat there for 20 mins. Checks couldn't be split.
We were there for a birthday dinner...if they couldn't accomodate, they could have declined the reservation up front.
Entire dinner was about 3 hours, for a party of 10. The majority of the time was spent....WAITING, being Ignored, and Rude service. I assume since they were charging us 18% gratuity (as most places do) they didn't feel the need to have to work for their tip.
Very Dissappointed and will not be going back.
Never go there – We friends went to this restaurant having high expectations as being in Brier Creek .
This restaurant does not qualify for anything. They have awful service, waiters seems the be confused and unfriendly. We had to wait long for almost everything, even for our check. They do not have good Drinks menu. One thing which is above all is the owner, he was loud and rude.
Horrible Customer Service, Huge hastle. Poorly run restaraunt – A group of friends went to Fratellos for a preplanned birthday party for one of our friends. The restaurant was decently decorated. Mind you, we?ve eaten at a lot of Italian Restaurants in Raleigh-Durham Area.
The bathrooms where a bit messy. The food was not up to par with other local Italian restaurants and chains. We also got drinks which were well over priced. The food took forever to make. We looked around the restaurant and it was mostly empty, not sure what the deal was and why it took over and hour to make it. Our waitress only filled our drinks twice during our whole meal and both times we had to ask.
Our biggest complaint came when we needed to pay. All 9 of us ordered different things and different drinks. We kindly asked for the check to be split in groups of 2?s for what we ordered. Not one of us had been to a restaurant locally that could not do this. The waitress huffed and puffed and then disappeared (Note: we never saw her again). Another waiter came by and made a fuss over it stating they could not split checks. They never told us upfront or listed this anywhere in the menu. He went on saying he would bring a calculator for us to do it ourselves. Taking the insult we agreed. The owner came by after yet another 20 minutes making a scene and talking loudly asking us what we were planning on doing(He made up some excuse that people from New York talk loud, when we asked why he was yelling) Finally the 2nd waiter came by to ask us what we ordered and split the check for us. The subtotals where wrong and most of us where over charged for our meals. At this point it had already been 45 minutes since we had asked for our bill so we paid it just to get out of there.
This was a very disturbing experience of poor customer service, all the way down to the owner. The owner didn?t try to make things better for us in anyway. Not a single one of us would recommend this place again. If you want good Italian food go to Biaggis in Cary,
Not to true to hours posted on the door – As much as I wanted to try this place, it was not open for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. The hours posted on the door said 11:30am. We got there at 11:45 and the door was locked. We were not the only people standing outside waiting. So instead of waiting around, we went up the street to Johnny Carino's. I made a call to managment when I got back to the office and was told that they did open at 11:30. Then the young lady proceeded to tell me that they opened a few minutes after 11:30, which was not true. She didn't offer an apology or an invitation to come back. As a potential customer, it upsets me to think that restuarants, who are providing a service to the public, could act so nonchalantly about opening on time. These days time is valuable; so before you visit this establishment during lunch hours, I would definitely call first!
Excellent Food, Questionable Cleanliness – I visited Fratello's for the second time in a week. The first time I went - at 11:30 last Friday afternoon - the restaurant was closed. I waited with a friend for about 10 minutes, then went across the street and had a great Greek lunch.
I decided to try out the restaurant again last night for an early dinner with a different friend. I got there a bit earlier than the friend and was seated promptly. The server was extremely pleasant offering bread (which was served luke warm and a little hard) and beverages while I waited. I noticed that the table cloths - while covered with white paper - were dirty. When I looked around the restaurant, most of the black table cloths were speckled with food from previous meals. I also noticed that there were a few large flies and several fruit flies buzzing around the place. I know that with people coming in and out, it is hard to keep flies out of a restaurant, but it was a little disconcerting.
My friend showed up - just in time to keep me from suggesting some other restaurant in Brier Creek - and we each ordered a glass of wine and an entree. I had a the Frutti di Mare Alfredo and she had the Eggplant Parmigiana. BOTH dishes were EXCELLENT. It was the best seafood alfredo dish I've had in years. The portion was huge and the taste was phenomenal.
I might visit this restaurant in the future based on the food - which I would give 6 stars if I could (just based on the one dish I had alone) - but I hope that they pay a bit more attention to details around cleanliness of the restaurant.
Great food and friendly staff – Fratello's is a great little Italian restaurant in the Brier Creek shopping center. This shopping center is plagued with so many chain restaurants, so if you are looking for a unique dining experience than Fratello's is the much needed answer. My husband and I have been a couple times so far and the food has been exceptional. The portions can be pretty large so it is also conducive for sharing. They serve liquor, beer and wine and offer some wines by the glass. However my only complaint is you only have a choice of one of each varietal when ordering by the glass. The service is fantastic, everyone that works here is like one big family. The owner is typically seen walking around the restaurant and talking with the diners. He has a great time visiting and laughing with everyone. We had such a great conversation with our server that we now know each other by name. The restaurant is small and very simply decorated, casual dress is not a problem.
Very good Italian – My wife and I ate at Fratello's and came away thoroughly enjoying our respective meals. Portions and service were good. Price was reasonable. We will be going back again.
