Thomas Bike Shop has been in operation since 1907 and has been in the same South Park location since 1937. It's phone number has never changed, it has only been expanded. My favorite expansion is "Belmont 2-0674. It's zip code has grown from "2" to 9-"2"- 102. The original cash register is still in the shop, and in use. That's history.
Don and Jinna Albright bought the family business in 2001 from the son of late Mr. Thomas. They have continued the South Park tradition by repairing bicycles other shops won't even touch.
Jinna and Don have taken romance, life, and history and kept alive and well. The proof is in the decor; the furniture, the historical photos and yearly awards on the wall, the professional riders it has sponsored. It looks like a hippy encampment too. Perhaps it is that Don Albright used to buy and get his BMX bike serviced here in the 80's (and I do believe that is Jinna's pink racing bike their too) It is what keeps them going. Prices run low (Taiwanese imports) to high (made in the USA).
The Albright's not only fix, repair, and sell new and used bikes, but get involved in the community. They donate bikes, helmets, gloves, water bottles, bike goody bags to numerous organizations around San Diego. It is a very important part of their business.
There are rumors of ghosts, perhaps it is Mr. Thomas knocking rows of tires off the walls…as if to say "Get back to work, and clean that spill up."
