Scream V – The experience was so poor that it would have made you scream!

They push you from one station to another each hosted by a different operator. Prices are usually $40 higher than what you were quoted on the phone as if they make up charges as they go along. Nothing is consistent there.

They try to impress you yet it is poorly run and over charged.

The staff is always late and constantly engaged in gossip about the other staff members. For a simple rinse, I was in there for four hours.

Owner and staff promote relaxer-free, natural hair styles and how easy it is to take care of. Yet you go back and the owner has shaved her head. Hmmmm.

I won't go back.

Horrible Experience!!! – I was new to town and went to Selah Salon because it was right around the corner from my apartment and looked like a nice place, never again!!! I got a bikini wax and it was awful! The stylist was almost 45 mins late, and then proceeded to tear my skin apart. I could barely walk for two days!! On top of that she didn't even do a good job, I had to go to a different salon about a week later to get it re-done! Never again.

Damaged! Damaged! Damaged! – I am a black woman with very coarse curly hair (or with what is know in the african-american community as natural hair). However do to my profession and the fact that I love to change my style every once in a while I like to have my hair straightened without having to use chemicals. I made the mistake of going to Selah to get my healthy natural hair straightened for an event that I was attending the next day. Usually when natural hair is temporarily straightened it will return to being curly and coarse after a couple of washes. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE AFTER I LEFT SELAH! After waiting for about an hour to see if the woman I had made my appointment with would show up this other woman said that she would only shampoo my hair in order to get me "ready" for the woman I made my appointment with. After a very rough shampoo where it felt like my head was being handled like a basketball and the shampoo suds gathered in my ears this woman proceeded to straighten my hair. Again, as she said to get me ready for my appointed stylist. 2 hours had gone by. Finally the woman who was originally suppose to take care of my hair walked in and began to vigurously straighten and cut my hair. I must admit the hair was cute after all of the chaos but the real test came when it was time for it to return to its natural state. After numerous washes (which is suppose to return my hair to its original state) all I am left with is a head full of half straight and half curly hair. I look like a mix between a chia pet and sammy davis jr. I am highly disappointed in the service that I received. the gossip at the different stations is also rampid at Selah's. I am afraid that I may have to cut most of my hair off to get rid of the damage. I left feeling tired and over charged. Never again will I step foot in Selah's Salon and Day Spa in St. Louis, MO.

Pretentious – If you have the patience of a Saint or a day to waste, then this is the place to get your hair “did”.

I wonder who wrote those positive reviews; the owner? I will never recommend another naïve person to the pretentious place again. I am just blown away by the rudeness of the owner and staff (they have to go along with her or they’ll be looking for another job). At any rate, if you make an appointment with the owner (who is really good) be prepared to wait, because she may have to conduct other business, eat her lunch, go next door and visit awhile, or talk to the staff (about other staff members who didn’t show up), all before she will get to your hair. However, if you chose to leave, instead of wait for her, (after all you may have a life, and your own business to conduct) be prepared for avenge. Should you be stupid enough to believe that you might want to give her the benefit of the doubt and try her once more (like I did), you can rest assure the avenge will come at the most inopportune time. Stupid me made an appointment with the owner a week in advance; I showed up on time, only to have the owner look me dead in the eyes and say “Can’t do your hair, won’t do your hair, I gotta go; my other stylist will do your hair”. As I turned to leave, I informed her that she could have called me. Her and her staff stood there with smirks; however, then I understood it was about “payback time”. I was hurt; however, I needed to find someone to do my hair for my Aunt’s viewing and funeral the next day. Praise be to God! It all worked out and I found a wonderful stylist. I should have listened to all the ones that I had recommended to the owner of Selah in the past. They all came back and reported the same experiences as I had had; but I try to look for the good in people and I thought she could use the money. Because of her, I now know what maliciousness is, and God do not like anyone treating one of His children evilly; with that being said, I want to see how her business is holding up a year from now. All I can say is pray before you go!

horrible: will never go back – I wanted to support downtown businesses, so I made an appointment for a cut and color at Selah. When I got there, everyone was very nice. The owner started to work on my hair, ensuring me that the color I wanted was attainable. Then everything went bad. She pawned me off onto an 'apprentice'. That means this girl was not in beauty school, had no certification, was just beginning to learn. I was upset, as I had requested the owner to do my hair, and was paying the price for her skills...not a student. This girl was instructed to mix the dye for my hair and apply it. I was very uncomfortable with her doing this, but thought the owner would be supervising. She didn't. I was there for over four hours while random people messed with my hair. They had no idea what they were doing. AT ALL. My hair turned out horrible, and they were so careless that they stained and ruined the back of my shirt with the dye. My hair was so bad at the close of business hours, we worked out an agreement that I would come back in the next morning at 6 AM before work so she could fix my hair. The next morning, she only made things worse. I was there for another four hours that day...to finish only with bright purple hair. And a horrible cut. The owner, who was supposed to be doing my hair, but instead had just intermittently glanced at the progress of the students...apologized for the way my hair turned out and told me she would not take my money. Good, because I was not going to pay her anyway. My hair was literally purple. When I went to my office later that day, my co-workers suggested I take the day off and get it fixed. I had to do just that. And my hair was in horrible condition, as they had no idea what they were doing and overbleached and overprocessed it. This is a horrible salon, unprofessional...beware...the stylists are not all certified and will mess up your hair!!!! Very unprofessional and disregard for people's time, hair and money. I will never go there again and have dissuaded many from trying them. My hair did not recover for a long time.

Very unprofessional – I had read the good reviews for Selah and decided to use them for my hair on my wedding day (I was not getting married where I live so I couldn't use my normal salon). While the trial run was okay -- we got the right style after a number of attempts -- they ended up being one of the most unprofessional vendors I can imagine working with. At 3:30 pm ON THE DAY BEFORE MY WEDDING, they called to inform me that the stylist who had done my trial had left the salon 3 weeks before. They then flat out lied to me, saying they'd tried to get in touch with me -- they obviously had my cell phone number but had never left a voicemail message with me, and I searched my phone records and never found a missed incoming call from them. They said they were still free to do my hair the next day and understood that I might want to do another trial, but when was I supposed to do another trial when my wedding was less than 1 day away?!?!? In the end, my day of planner was able to find another vendor for me to work with, so I canceled my appointment with Selah. This may have just been an instance in which something went wrong at the salon, but this was the one real stress of my wedding weekend, which is NOT was any bride needs.

Excellent Service – From beginning to end I had excellent service at this salon. I was treated very well and I would definitely recommend any of the services they have to offer. They were quite knowledgeable about natural hair care and I will continue to utilize their services.

Selah could teach San Francisco salons a few tricks. – This week I was attending a high school journalism conference with four of my students. To reward myself for taking the five days out to support the students in their news endeavors, I scheduled some much-needed salon services on my first day in St. Louis. The Renaissance concierge directed me to Selah, which was just six blocks down on Washington Street.

From the moment I arrived, the aestheticians were welcoming and friendly, calling me "Miss Lisa," which was a charming introduction to the way that St. Louis people talk to each other.

Ondre greeted me, set me up in the spa chair for my pedicure, and attended to every last detail: the temperature of the water, conversation about who I was and what I enjoyed, confessions about his plans to retire in Puerto Rico . . . I feel as though Ondre provided the most wonderful, friendly introduction possible to St. Louis residents. I truly enjoyed my time in the salon because of him!

The quality of both my manicure and pedicure was impeccable. Though for some reason, my manicures normally begin chipping by the next day (I know! Isn't that annoying? I think it's because my nails are soft), my current manicure is still perfect three days later.

I also got a brow wax, and was scared when she suggested that we "take some off the middle," but was pleasantly surprised by the results.

My biggest surprise happened at checkout when the woman told me that Selah was a "no-tip salon." I had never heard of that before. It makes sense, given the prices of the services, which seem to incorporate a generous portion to be allotted to the service providers, but there is something uniquely satisfying about getting to checkout and knowing exactly what you are expected to pay. When she directed me to write a review as a "gratuity" for the aestheticians, I promised that I would, because I had been treated so well and received such high-quality service.

San Francisco's salons could borrow a page or two from Selah's book!

Most Salons I've been to are the same old story....wait for hours on end to receive a hair do....not to mention horrible customer service. Well, not yesterday. Selah has opened my eyes to what REAL customer service means. The staff didn't treat me as if I were privileged to be there, but the staff treated me as if they wanted me to return again and again. I had excellent service from not one person but the entire staff, and they were truly genuine!!! I can honestly say that this is the first time I've seen a team in a salon and the Best Service Yet.
