The Q Shack is a family run business, located in Raleigh's North Hills Shopping Center. We source our produce and most of our meats from local farmers who farm sustainably and/or organically. We support our local schools and charities through a variety of benefits and programs. All meats are smoked in house and all of our food is homemade fresh daily.
not go back.the female employees are rude to female customers.only nice to male customers. the restaurant was dirty.and had to ask the employees to clean the tables .so could eat in the dining room.the female employees would not give me the full amount of hush puppies on my plate.that would be normal size.had to ask the manager.the female employees try to start fights with female customers.not volunteer to wait on,talk back rude, interrupt female customers while waiting on them, walk away in the middle of waiting on female customer and customers have to ask them to come back and finish job, yell at them, walk away while female customers are talking to them.and noticed the food crumbs on the table.brushed onto the floor and it stayed there.enough not to come back.and female employees cashiers would overcharge female customers.and not volunteer to give correction when short changed. And not volunteer to correct wrong order.
Folks - give yourself a break next turkey day and order your turkey from The Q Shack. We did and it was fabulous. My mom was eating it with a fork it was so tender. For the money and ease (1.5 hours in the oven) you simply can't beat it. Well done Q Shack!
The Q Shack did a wonderful job catering my daughter's wedding reception. From the taste and quality of the food to the superb waitstaff/bartenders I could not have asked for more. In addition to the evening reception, the Q Shack also catered a breakfast that morning in the North Hills restaurant. The breakfast was a full-spread buffet for the wedding party and family (60 people). The food was excellent and the service was superb. The Q Shack's flexibility in putting together this event was exemplary.
The wedding reception was for a large crowd of 250 and was handled flawlessly. The food was excellent. The service (servers/waiters/bartenders) was impeccable. The Q Shack employees were very professional, worked extremely hard and genuinely were there to help make the occasion perfect.
I could not have asked for a better catering experience and highly recommend the Q Shack. Their flexibility, quality, service and genuine interest made for a memorable (and troublefree) celebration.
Thanks to Tom and his excellent staff (including the cooks that prepared the excellent food)! You contributed to a great and happy celebration.
Outstanding, professional catering - highly recommend! – I've worked with Tom on a number of occasions over the years - first, as manager of business events for a museum and now as a manager within a large organization, so I feel well qualified to assess Tom's expertise with catering events. His experience at overall event organization is very evident, and he goes above and beyond to ensure an excellent experience for the customer.
Tom was the first person I thought of for a very important, large event we are holding in just a few weeks. I needed the event to be in professional, capable hands. Tom's extensive experience in catering relieved a lot of stress for me as I knew every aspect of the event would be covered down to the smallest detail.
The food at Q Shack is very high quality barbecue - we've had a number of compliments from business and professional guests at events, and a number of attendees requested his business card for future events.
Tom also has a new restaurant and catering business in addition which sources local and organic foods and sounds delicious. Can't wait to try it. I recommend Tom's professionalism and high quality food very highly. Tom will make your event an experience that your guests will warmly remember.
It's Final - Will never go back – Today I read mixed reviews on the Q Shack and thought maybe we should try it out to judge for ourselves. We had a craving for some smoked brisket. We ordered the tailgate #1 thinking leftovers for work. Not so. I do not quite know what we received but what was supposed to be brisket. It was a tasteless piece of meat that looked like a roast and not cut as brisket but pieces pulled from the meat. The second meat the pork was dry and not sure what they were trying to do with this. The ribs were OK but again dry. The side of greens was griddy with dirt and the side of macaroni was not good either. No smoked flavor or taste in any of the food. The sauces were awful. Will never go there again.
Dear Tastebuddy: Thanks for coming in to the restaurant- I appreciate it. I will take a look to see what could have gone wrong for you. I am wondering why you didn't let us know while you were there so we could have replaced anything for you- it would have been our pleasure. I appreciate that the internet gives folks immediate power to write reviews, but I am more interested in pleasing guests than worrying about reviews. I am sorry you had a bad experience and wish I could have (or you'd allow me) to make it right. Have a great day.
I am so sorry that you are having stomach issues. But I can assure you that it didn't happen with us. It takes your body 24+ hours to digest food- that is scientific fact. The culprit wasn't at Q Shack, but something you ate the day before for lunch or breakfast. I appreciate all critiques, good and bad, but this isn't a critique I can own and frankly, it is a bit discouraging to see that someone would assault a business owner for something he didn't do. Our ribs are farm fresh and come from a USDA inspected facility and taken from pigs that are raised in a natural manner. They are smoked at 250 degrees for 4 hours and then spend another 6 hours, minimum, in a 180 degree holding cabinet where they continue to cook slowly. They are cooked to internal temperatures of a minimum of 180 degrees before being placed in the holding cabinet. Our ribs are pink because the wood smoke applied and the natural reaction of meat to wood.

Insult to BBQ – Awful the meat was dry and tasteless, the coleslaw was cabbage and mayo, the "sweet Tea" was bitter and instead of hiring locals the owner imports non-english speaking immigrants nobody there could understand what we wanted and our order was wrong. I emailed the owner and he called me and harrased me on a sunday night. There is NO southern cooking here or customer service, this yankee thinks he is still in brooklyn. Dont eat here go somewhere else.
Mr. Poole: I am sorry you didn't enjoy your experience with us. I post my phone and email prominently in the restaurant and my staff is trained to make any bad experience right for our guests immediately. That is our culture and my promise. Your satisfaction is why I am in business and it is my pleasure to provide it.
You chose to curse my manager with foul language in front of other guests and to write a poisonous email to me stating that you hoped my business would fail. I didn't think either was appropriate. We would have been happy to have made anything right for you on Sunday. We had hundreds of happy guests and wanted you to have been among them. I wish you had given us the chance. I took your criticism to heart and have already shared your comments with my managers and staff for future problem-solving.
I wish you you the best and hope you find a restaurant you love.

Great Catering Job – Tom and crew catered my sons Bar Mitzvah party this past weekend. The brisket and smoked turkey were a tremendous hit. The kids absolutely loved the mac n cheese as did the adults who raided the kids buffet. Desserts were very good, particularly the cupcakes. In addition the food served during cocktail hour was also great. Tom was a pleasure to work with. His staff was friendly and sweet. I could not have asked for more. Thanks to Tom and his staff.
Thanks so much! We love a good party and if we hadn't been serving food we would have been dancing with your son! We appreciate your business and thank you for taking the time to let us know we did it right. Be well. Tom Meyer, Owner
I thought I was gonna be WOW'ed.. did not happen – We ordered 2 combo plates: the chicken and the pork butt. Both visually looked the same but more importantly, they tasted the same. Both meats were over flavored with seasoning and were very dry. For the sides, the collards were served with too much liquid and I personally prefer chopped collards. The collards still had a lot of stems/ribs in them which makes for messy eating. The fries were very good. The sweet potatoes were over flavored. I'm not sure what the seasoning was (perhaps cinnamon or allspice but it dominated the flavor of the potatoes. We could not finish them as they were too strong tasting. The place is in a great location and was very clean. I think the cooks may just want to cut down on the flavor enhancements and let the food speak for itself.
Thanks for the visit and for the feedback. I will make sure to let our guys know to mix the sweets a bit more thoroughly. We follow our recipe each time, but we mix the sweets by hand with a whisk. Sounds like they didn't whisk it enough to blend it all the way through. That spice is nutmeg- and a little goes a long way.
I want a few stems and such in the collards, as I make them a knife and fork style. Both the collards and sweets are organically grown for me in Hurdle Mills, NC and we wash and stem them by hand. Over the years, my guests tell me they like that style and so we leave them that way. Always happy to chop them for you the next time- just let us know!
I appreciate your comments and look forward to meeting you sometime. Be well.

Great Business & Great BBQ – Here's a follow up on the neighborhood party. The food arrived on time and the delivery staff were very nice and very helpful. The food was packaged very well and was delicious. Everyone raved about the quality, tenedrness, and most of all, the flavor. We will be using Q-Shack again for our outings. Many thanks.
Contacted Q-Shack to arrange for BBQ for a neighborhood party. I was having some difficulty getting through to place my order because they were so busy. After reading several reviews here, I contacted the owner, Tom Meyer directly. He returned my call within a few hours. He appologized for any difficulty and then made all the arrangements for my order himself. He was extremely nice and very professional. He threw in several very nice extras for my trouble so I was very pleased with the arrangements. I have eaten at Q-Shack several times in the past and Tom's business plan includes sourcing as many supplies as possible from local farmers and businesses. It shows in the quality of his food. My wife and I went there again last Friday and were very pleased. The ribs were fall off the bone tender but still had a good chew and portions were just right. The french fries were excellent and cooked to order. My wife loved the mashed sweet potatoes. The restaurant was clean and the help was very friendly and prompt. Can't go wrong with North Raleigh Q-Shack . I've been to them all in this area and this one is arguably the best.
Thank you for the review and for your support. I value the input we receive from our guests and appreciate the time you took to share it with me.
