Awful Experience – We had a reservation via Open Table at Beehive. I also called Beehive to confirm that I had requested a table downstairs in front of the band for the Sunday Jazz Brunch. I explained this was a special date for my husband with the theme 'celebrating the arts', so the focus was music more than the food. I wrote this in the Open Table comment box as well, but to be sure, I explained this to the staff member I spoke with at the Beehive as well.
They ensured me a table for two downstairs near the band at 1:15. I asked advisement on the time as well, as we needed to be out in time to attend a 3 o'clock show & wanted to have plenty of time to have breakfast and enjoy the live Jazz. We were punctual for our reservation and checked in at the host stand near the door. We were told our table was being cleaned for us and it would just be a minute. 20 minutes later (no offer to sit at upstairs bar, or hang our coats) we were told by same girl the people at our table aren't paying and there is no table for us. She offered us a tiny table upstairs squished between walk-ins, at the edge of the overcrowded bustling upper room- nowhere near music. She never apologized for the situation and then went further to say, “this is the table I like, you don’t have to worry about the music- you can talk”.
When I then went to the bathroom downstairs, I saw 2 open tables being held near the music. At his point we had been there 45 minutes and now it was just about ordering and quickly eating so we could catch a cab in time for the show and get out of there. It was another 10 minutes before someone offered us water/drinks. They served no bread and we never had one particular waiter.
When the drinks were delivered, the drink order was wrong. He took them back and then eventually delivered my screwdriver (watered down, not fresh juice) and my husband’s bloody mary. We love bloody mary’s, especially the spice & horseradish. This one was so overpowered by the mix, it was gross. He couldn’t drink it, which is so unusual for us; we love everything that goes into bloody marys! Even the celery was wilted and rubbery, flopped over the glass.
We both ordered the same eggs & polenta. It was ok. Could easily whip this up at home in 15 min. And it is definitely not an AFRICAN dish!! Moreover, there was a piece of black hair in my husbands dish; we didn’t even bother telling them at this point. Our table was also wobbly, wait staff tried to push a wedge under table legs, but it was two legs of the tiny table, so there was no hope of stabilizing it.
Eventually our check came, by someone we had received no service from. It was pricy for marginal food and bad drinks.
This restaurant did not validate the time I took making the reservation and spending time planning this surprise for my husband although the woman on the phone assured me they would. The girl that was working that day took no accountability and said things to us like “we don’t guarantee tables’, “ “the two sisters at that table near the band haven’t seen each other in forever so they are going to be a long time” and “the people at YOUR table have been here for over two hours and have not paid their bill yet! So sorry!” She put things going wrong on everything and everybody else (guests) rather than taking accountability to show some sense of wanting to help us/make the situation better. We will not go back to this place and recommend you find a different spot for Sunday Brunch! The whole experience was awful and a waste of my time.
Great music and menu! – It's not often that you find a place in Boston that has great live music and great food, but the Beehive has both!
I went there for Sunday Brunch with friends. They had live jazz playing the whole time and the food was the best I've had for brunch in years. We loved it so much we're planning on going back for their New Year's Eve Party this year!
major food poisoning! – 3 out of 4 people in our group were soooo sick following dinner here. Never seen anything like it. Very bad news. Cool looking venue but...but...but...don't do it.
Don't Tell My Boyfriend.... – I'm cheating on him with the Beehive!!! Well, not really but I feel like it every time I eat or drink there (and maybe the French bartender is easy on the eyes...shh, you didn't hear that from me).
Every time I go I order the following, in this order: Beelini, Truffled Pierogies, the Moroccan cigars and the Mezze Platter....followed by several Beelinis.
The jazz bands are top notch, it can get a bit loud given the openess of the levels but I usually forget about that anyway...it's very minor compared to everything else there that makes me oh so happy.
Also, I appreciate the crayons for drawing on your paper place mats when sitting at the bar...usually brings out some good laughs the next morning when I see it staring me in the face on my fridge!
Great date location...RESERVATIONS a must as this place is jammin' constantly, or you can risk the bar which is equally as great. If making reservations, do a late dinner....8:30-9:30'ish!!
Good place to drink & music...ehh on food. – If you're in the South End, the Bee Hive is a great place to end up. The bar scene is good. Pretty lively. The line to get in can get a little long. One of the key factors is the music have always been good.
However, each time I go, I always leave unimpressed with the food. It's ok...but nothing to write home about.
Instead, Sibling's is right next door (REALLY good - but more upscale), Picco's (really good - more casual), Mela's for Indian, B&G's and if you're willing to hoof it, Toro's is about a 5 minute walk.
Great for drinking & music...ehh on food.
Beehive Bust – Walked in the door and headed straight to the bar. Wine Riot was starting in about an hour and needed some hair of the dog to help with all the wine that was coming my way.
I ordered a bloody mary and my friend ordered a mimosa. Both took some time to make, not really sure why. Bloody Mary came and boy was it spicey. I LOVE SPICEY but atleast give me a warning before throwing that much spice into something that is supposed to help my morning after issues!
And here somes the bad. The bartender (she) double charged for one of the drinks. I brought it to her attention and it was fixed but my account has not been credited the first amount that was charged! Still trying to deal with the management on this one. I hope I reciee better service from the manager then the staff!
Over all a neat place but bring cash.
great dinner and drinks spot – looking at these reviews you'd think the service is terrible, but i've found the waitstaff very attentive when i've been. it's always crowded and a fun scene. food is also quite good so id recommend.
A great place for food and music – The Beehive is a great place to hear music, that isn't a crappy indie rock bar. The schedule is always changing, and you really don't know who is going to be playing there from one night to the next. Unfortunately, the food can be as unpredictable as the music. I have had great meals there, and I have had mediocre, but I don't necessarily go there for the food first. I go with friends, for drinks, dancing, etc. The food is secondary. I've always loved the atmosphere of this place, and that's what keeps me coming back.
Great place to drink with friends, eat, and meet people. – The Beehive has a very cool and friendly vibe. It is a great place to bring almost anyone.
Beware: 2 hour table limit - they will kick you out! – I went here to celebrate my birthday since I had heard it was a great place. The restaurant itself has a great young vibe to it. There was 6 of us and we had an evening reservation on a Saturday. I had the pork which was a little dry and there were little shards of bones I had to pick out of my mouth, but the overall taste was fine. I tried my friend's steak which was much better. We were downstairs next to the live music which was fun, although it was hard to hear conversations around the table. Even so, the music was good and were enjoying ourselves. After finishing dessert and ordering another round of drinks, we were approached by the manager and asked to leave since reservations were only for "two hours" and the other party had been waiting. We had never heard of this 2 hour limit before and everyone was stunned. Up until that point, I was having a good time, but getting kicked out was extremely rude. We weren't "squatting" and had spent $400 with the intention of spending more. This has never happened to me before and the manager was unapologetic. I will never go back to this restaurant. I will steer everyone I know away from the Beehive.
