I expected better.... – El Indio catered our wedding. There were a series of problems with their management and communication. This email was sent to El Indio dated 11/17/11. As of this date these issues with their catering have not been resolved. If you are considering using El Indio as your caterer for an event, please beware and read on:
I want to get back to you with some disturbing feedback in regards to your catering services for our wedding reception.
While the flavor and preparation of the food was good, we had some very concerning problems with the customer service, presentation and lack of management.
The rental company Martha used for tables was extremely slow, and Martha kept us waiting. As you can imagine, we have enough to do on the day before our wedding, and waiting on you and calling you repeatedly was not on our list of priorities. We expect you and your affiliates to have seamless organization.
After this incident, Martha failed to show up to our event. Up to this point, she was planning to be there and we did not receive a phone call to explain her absence.
We had also spoken with Martha and Rudy on at least two occasions about the food being presented on trays and bussed around the event by your wait staff. This did not happen. Instead we were given a 'buffet' style dinner which
lowered the tone of the evening. We did not pay to have our guests stand in line for food. It is my understanding that typically switching from "waited" staff to a "buffet-style" setting should result in a reduced cost.
We had given specific instruction to Martha and Rudy that the wedding toast would be a tequila shot. The staff then opened SIX bottles of Champagne (which we paid for and supplied to the bartender) most of which went to waste and was thrown away. We don't expect your staff to be wasting our money.
There were also considerable issues with the barman you supplied. We had discussed with Martha (through email dated 11/2/11) and Rudy (at our site visit on 10/8/11) specific orders that the bartender stop serving drinks at 8pm and clean the bar area. This did not happen. He kept serving drinks and the area was left with trash everywhere at the end of the night for us to clean up.
We also had some very disturbing feedback from our guests in regards to the quality of service. We received complaints that he was drinking and that some guests had received beer that had been mixed with other drinks.
Additionally, we had given Martha specific instruction that the kegs of beer were to be 'self service'. Again, I want to reiterate, we purchased and supplied all of the alcohol for our event!! Instead, the bar man pulled them into area behind the bar, forcing our guests to ask him to pour the beer, which he did badly. We had numerous complaints that our guests received a beer that was mostly foam.
Each of your wait staff was generously compensated for their time on top of the flat fee charged by El Indio. Myself and my Grandfather personally gave them $100 each as a tip. Your bartender also used one of our cups as a "tip jar" (which I found to be in poor taste especially when we supplied the alcohol and he drank some of our offerings that were intended for our guests)!! Consequently, I don't expect to have a laundry list of problems, poor customer service and lack of management. Myself, my wife and other couples using your services expect and deserve better.

I've eaten many versions of "mexican" food and although not a professional critic, i know what good mexican food is. I ordered the carnitas plate and recieved about 2 tablespoons of overly salty pork meat with some tasteless beans and even more tasteless rice.
They neglected to tell us they were closing and after our food arrived they began slamming the chairs on to the tables around us. Then they placed the trash cans next to our table and made it very clear we were not welcome.
My girlfriend ordered the chicken fajitas and recieved a very small portion of greasy boiled chicken with some burned bell peppers thrown in.
The guacamole was great and well worth the money but the chips we purchased were stale and rubbery. Our meals were around $9.00 per plate....not a lot of money...but i've paid less and had food that was at least edible. We paid a total of $25.00 and had a very difficult time parking.
If you're looking for frozen T.V. dinner food this is the place for you.
Mediocre food that tourists will like – Having grown up in S. Cal in the 60's/70's, I have come to understand that over the years, both Calif and Arizona have "dumbed down" good Mexican food for tourists and residents who have relocated here. Sonoran style is generally the most mild, cheesy and greasy - but there are complexities to good mexican food you aren't going to get at El Indio. Caliornia needs to take a lesson from New Mexico regarding sticking to authentic flavors and spice!
We had seen the review of this restaurant on "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives" and sadly, this happens to be the 3rd restaurant that Guy Fieri has struck out on. I love him, but no longer trust the show's content....given that another restaurant reviewed on that same episode was directly next door - how convenient for the film crew.
The Salsa has no spice to it. The Chili Relleno had been pre-frozen ( a common practice to prevent the cheese from leaking out)...however, the cheese was still cold and had a "Velveeta" consistency. The red sauce lacked flavor and had no smokiness to it at all. With all the really good, family owned restaurants in San Diego county - this is at the bottom of my list!
Tasteless plain Mexican food – I don't know why this place has such a good reputation yet the food is left without much taste. The staff is not attentive and rushes you through the line...but most of all, the food is awful. It was a big disappointment to me and my significant other that the food was less than average. We have eaten good mexican food many times but the food here is cheap and very plain.
Mmmm Mmmm mexican – My boyfriend and his family have been going here for years and he finally took me this past weekend to this very busy, very tasty mexican joint. The line was long but worth the wait for our beef tacos, bean burrito, fresh beef tamales and of course the delicious, spiced tortilla chips and guacamole. We took our meal to go and ventured towards Downtown where we had a picnic by the bay- the food really made it the perfect lunch.
very disappointed – Like the other reviewer, saw it on foodtv and drive with my wife that same day for a little taste. Luckily the line wasnt too bad. We ordered beef tacos, tamales, and rolled tacos and all were a big let down. It may have been one of the worse tasting mexican foods we had. Ingredients seemed fresh enough, but flavor and seasoning were not there in any of the dishes. The tamales, one of my favorite dishes, especially was a big disappointment. It was covered in chilli (tasted like canned chilli).... is that authentic? Not sure. We were both puzzled as to why this is a legendary place.
Long line to get in! – After it was fetured on DDD, I went and gave it a try...food was average and service slow. The tortillas they make were good and I brought 2 dozen home to Montana! Cant say I would travel 1600 miles to do again.

The imported, Mexican ceramic tiles that colorfully line the floor at this friendly no-frills eatery have been in place for decades, as have many of the kitchen staff in back. Get in line by the rod iron gate under the colorful Mexican flags and be sure to grab your chips, salsa and guac before you order. The carnitas, carne asada, rolled tacos and enchiladas come in combo plates with refried beans and rice.
