A bike-centric, beer-authentic, family friendly brewery that will charm you. Black bean burger, pint of pretzels and kids meals that my kids love! Very funky bathrooms for both the women and the men.
The staff is great and they have good pretzels (the cheese dipping sauce is awesome) and lots of beer options!
Still not "The Place" – Lets review some...
Back when Christian E. was brewing beer at Laurelwood, I can remember thinking that Mike was going to loose this young brewer to someone with vision, or Christian would strike out on his own. I couldn't imagine a talent like that paired with the poor service and sub-quality food delivered at the Laurelwood public house. Then we all saw the dream come true, Christian put together a wonderful physical plant to house his new Hopworks Urban Brewery. A very exciting time, and a good chance for Christian to pair his fine beers with a quality menu. First, I would like to say I am a Hopworks fan, and I remain hopeful that the team at Hopworks will become a great Brewpub.
Christian, the food does not hold up, it is falling far below the potential and abilities that your beer maintains. I have patronized your brewery every month since you opened and have found that the food, and the service is starting to fall into the Laurelwood realm. Yesterday in fact I took several guests to enjoy a few IPA's and some food. Our waiter "Dustin", when we could understand him,(cause he mumbles), didn't even know what the soup of the day was, and there are only 2, one of which is always the same...right? Our pizza was soggy, the crust squishy in most places and tough in others. Each and every time I have had a meal at Hopworks, it has been poor, or mediocre at best. There has been only one "Brewpud", in the history of my travels that has actually made the connection between good service, good food and good drink, that was the old "Spanish Peaks Brewery" in Bozeman Montana...god bless that stupid Italian Mark who let his personal life destroy such a great place...*snif*
Anyway, get on the stick HOP's crew! There is still time to break away from the others in the pack and shine!
I give 3 stars, one for hope!
Great Food, Great atmosphere!!! – Best food on this section of Powell.. the greek salad is my most favorite. Everything is organic, beer is great. Its trendy and SO not trashy like so many other bars on Powell. It attracts great customers, they play funky music, and its cozy. Although the service is a little slow, this place is still FAIRLY new so i give them the benefit of the doubt.
TERRIBLE..TERRIBLE..SERVICE – Well me and some friends decided to go to hopworks today what a bad idea. First we were seated and then proceeded to wait for our server which by the way never came. I had to actually find her and ask her to come to our table to take our drink order. Then she finally eventually came and took our food order 20 minutes later . I will actually say that was the last time we saw her. Our food came out after 45 minutes yes 45 mintues. We had to ask for silverware and anything else we needed. Of course since we waited so long our drinks were empty, so we put them at the end of the table hoping that someone would come and refill them. Of course no one came so I personally went to the bar and got all of us refills. A lady behind the bar came to our table to bring the drink back to us. At this point we told her what a bad experience we had and to just bring us the bill. She said that she was sorry that the kitchen usually takes 25 minutes for the food and she would bring us our bill. At this point we were just fed up. We ordered slices and salads which I think wouldn't take that long. Anyways she came with the bill and comped our sodas. Thank you.. NOT. I believe she should of brought the situation to a manager. By the way 1 server on the bar side with 3 people behind the bar. I think its got good food but definately not worth the hassle of the service. So if you have time on our hands and alot of patience you should go there!
Fantastic Pizza, Great Beers, "The Submarine Room" – Hop Works is dope. The beers are above average, the food is pretty dang good ( I had a pizza & the Hummus plate, fries are rad, burgers & chicken sandwiches looked real good!) The seating in this place is ok, good patio seating, bar doesn't look too good, tables look sketch also (I like big comfy chairs). The place to get here is what we call the "The Submarine Room". It's a one table 6-8 people room off of the floor. You can still hear the music but can also hear your party. I'd reccomend this place if you wanna have some good food & drinks, don't expect much from the waitstaff but some of them are good.
Offensively long wait times for service at Hopworks – Today was my third visit to Hopworks, and my last. Every time I've had the same experience: hostess seats us, AND WE WAIT, AND WAIT, AND WAIT. Apparently the hostess can't take a drink order, and the servers are veeeeeeeery slow. This was Saturday afternoon about 2:30 p.m., place wasn't crowded, lots of empty tables, two employees sitting and talking near the entrance. It took 20 minutes to get a beer to drink, which is about the wait of our other two visits. Food is average or slightly worse, a bit overpriced and a little tasteless. Beer is not bad but not as good as Hedge House, Lucky Labrador, Roots, Green Dragon, Belmont Station --- all nearby. In short, no great reason to go there and an offensive experience WAITING.
One of the best – Portland is the home of local breweries and I've been to a few and I definately think Hopworks is one of the best so far. The beer is great and the food is reasonably priced and they have a great selection to fit a lot of tastes. I got the Portland Bella burger and it was delicious! The fries are great too! I've been raving about them ever since. The outdoor seating in the back is great in the summer time. It gets pretty busy on the weekends but the most I've had to wait was around 30 minutes or so and that was for a big party. Last weekend my parents car was broken into while we were eating at Hopworks. They parked in a small front parking lot which was near this strip club next door (go figure). So this would be something I'd be careful about since it's right on busy SE Powell near bus lines, a Motel 6, and multiple strip clubs. Nonetheless, I would recommend this for a group of friends, family, or couples.
Awesome food/beer, great for parties! – I brought a large group (30+ people) to Hopworks for a photography meeting last night. We were all raving about it afterwards. Our waitress, Brianna, remembered names (wow), kept everyone in beer and food, was polite and smiling the whole time, and split checks for us without concern. She handled the group better than most high-end restaurant waiters! Her assistants who brought up food and beer were super-polite and friendly. We were all so impressed, and some of our members bought growlers, they liked the beer so much.
Go Hopworks, go!
BAD EXPERIENCE – My family and I, 8 people, went for dinner last night, saturday. We got there at 5:10pm and weren't seated until 6:30. The host and hostess kept taking smaller parties , never thinking to put 2 tables together. We asked them several times but finally had to sit at 2 seperate tables across the room from each other. I will never go back again eventhough the food was very good. The saving grace for the evening was our waitress, Lauren, who served the children quickly and who was very plesant and cheerful. However, the disrespect the host staff had for us sealed my opnion.
Awesome beer food and service!! – We love Hopworks. We've been a few times and the beer is absolutely incredible. Definitely one of the best brewpubs in Portland. The food is great as well (try the calzones!). Service is great. It's so refreshing to have water and beer refills taken care of without having to think about it or flag someone down. We love this place!
Beer good, Food good, very busy and parking was a pain – In short, this place is suffering from it's popularity. You need to get there early to get a parking spot even though there is quite a lot of spaces altogether. The joint was packed and it did take around 30mins before my Olive Garden style vibrator went off to tell me my table was ready. Although I'd asked for outside seating I found that wasn't going to happen and I was show to a (tight) booth. There was barely room for the 4 of us (and we're all average size peeps). The staff were very friendly though. Drinks came pretty quickly. The food was pretty good. I had the steak sandwich which was delicious although the fries let the meal down.
I know it's a family friendly place so if you're easily annoyed by ankle biters stay away.
Oh and don't park at safari next door.... they don't like it.
