Proper Eats screams small college town co-op, like they're that little shop that knows what's been going on in the organic and natural world. Don't miss dishes such as The Proper Plate from the cafe side.
A happy hippie mecca in the middle of downtown St. Johns, you’ll find organic produce, household items and a devotedly seasonal vegan organic café all in one here—make a meal of the avocado spread, tempeh Reuben and a house-brewed kombucha.
Listen to Motörhead while shopping for quinoa in the most Portland-esque store in St. Johns. Proper Eats provides a nice date atmosphere with affordable dishes and no reservations.
Favorite restaurant in Portland – This is my favorite restaurant in Portland. Everything we've ordered there has been wonderful. We almost always get whatever the special is. It's always good, and amazing that it's vegan as well. Lots of interesting, fresh vegetables prepared in interesting ways. Very good vegan "meats" of various kinds. Entrees, salads, sandwiches, soups, etc. Large beer selection. Addictive house-made date fudge.
yum, yum, yummy – I have never had a bad meal at this place and I have tried so many things on the menu. I usually go in because I am craving a particular dish, but I almost always end up getting one of the specials instead because they sound even better, and are.
i like the beer selection, including draft beer.
there is also decent live music sometimes.
my only complaint is the atmosphere- it's a little drab. i am hoping they will lighten it up a bit some day. but not really a big deal considering the super food.
Vegan food everyone will like – Proper Eats: their name is also their mission. My girlfriend and I are not vegan ourselves, but we love this vegan restaurant-grocer and we regularly take other non-vegan friends there. I remember when Proper Eats opened. My girlfriend's office was right above them and we were among their first customers. Two guys shared a dream of a business with a conscience that sold vegan foods, grains, fresh produce -- as much as possible organic and from local farmers -- and had a vegan restaurant that used nothing that was detrimental to the environment or any group of people. It would feature cool live music from local artists and would be more affordable than most similar establishments. They made it happen. The food in the early days was a little hitAndMiss, but I know better than to judge a restaurant by its early days. These days they have ironed out most of the kinks and the restaurant food is generally excellent, with my personal favorite being the super yummy peanut noodles and the many soups they serve. My girlfriend has a whole bunch of favorites (I hate mushrooms, peppers, onions and most nuts, which limits me). They have good beer, wine and quality sodas, and the vegan desserts are super yummy. Some nights, particularly in summer, they feature live music, and others they have free speech nights, showing documentaries not generally seen. The decor is minimalist, but comfortable. Proper Eats was a marvelous addition to St. Johns and remains a comfortable place to go and enjoy yummy food that's good for us. Highly recommended.
I dream of the vegan rueben... – And I'm not even VEGETARIAN! This place is awesome for anyone who likes good, wholesome food (vegan or not!) I have to go here at least once a month for the wonderful soups, sandwiches and desserts! And the natural foods market in the front is just a nice bonus!
