Why go anywhere else? – Finding a good automotive shop is like finding a twenty dollar bill on the sidewalk. Finding a shop like Hookset is like finding a treasure chest filled with gold.

I'm no car guy, but when JC explains whats wrong with my car, or what my car needs to run efficiently, I understand what he is saying. If I dont understand what he is saying, then he walks me back to my car and like a professor, he explains it and points it out. Most shops are burdened with heavy schedules and have no interest in taking time for you to understand your car. These guys have a very different approach. They want you to understand your car. They want you to be informed about this beast your putting money into. My Subaru will run for another 10 years just like it did when I bought it, because these guys are on the job.

Incredibly trustworthy – My wife and I have been using hookset for the past several years and have found them to be very trustworthy and friendly. I have a ford f150 and my wife has an acura mdx and they have handled the service for both vehicles very well. When they say they treat you like family, they mean it. We always say hello to the shop dogs and know everyone in the shop on a first name basis. At first, I took my truck in for the oil change special that I had a coupon for. I felt very at ease talking to JC (the owner) about issues I was having with my truck and he looked into everything for me. They have always helped me decide what work I needed compared to what work could wait. When I needed an alignment they referred me to the line up shop. I have referred several friends and they have all found hookset to be trustworthy. In fact, when my brother was visiting from Eugene his brakes were grinding so I suggested he have hookset look at them, particularly because his tundra wasn't stopping well. When hookset called they said that "someone" had apparently been 4-wheeling in the truck and the brakes were caked with hardened clay mud. They cleaned the rotors and told us to come get the truck. NO CHARGE. I have never had a mechanic before be so trustworthy. I wouldn't hesitate to refer anyone there. I feel like they have given us incredible service and been very honest and I couldn't ask for more in a mechanic.

BEWARE of the good reviews here... – I've been a customer at Hookset for several years. I have thought of JC (the owner) as being friendly and knowledgeable. But at the first sign of a problem - he totally turned on me.

Here's the story: since Hookset doesn't have the equipment to do wheel alignments, JC who says he is a front-end expert, took my car to another shop and did the alignment himself. I also bought new tires from him at about the same time. Those tires showed incredible wear within the first few months. In order for tires to wear like that, there is obviously something wrong with the alignment. More time went by and more extreme wear on the tires. When I asked him about it, he said to make up for the problem he would sell me a new set of tires at his cost. I made some calls and found that I could get the tires and installation for just $25 more at another local shop - and that also included a coupon for a significant discount on the needed wheel alignment. So there was no actual savings on the tires from Hookset.

So I called JC and asked if he could offer me a better deal as compensation for the problem with the alignment. He accused me of stabbing him in the back after he bent over backward to give me a good deal on replacement tires. He said the alignment he did was done correctly and that I must have lent out the car or hit a pot-hole to wreck the alignment (neither of which happened). Instead of nicely telling me that he couldn't do more for me, he totally chewed me out and told me he didn't want me for a customer any longer!

So beware, JC comes across as a nice guy and everything is fine - until there is a problem.

Honestly though, I have had doubts that Hookset can handle anything more than oil changes and tune-ups all along. The shop and office are grubby and piled with junk. They seem disorganized and the mechanics somewhat inexperienced.

Terrible experience. I was overcharged for their mistakes. – .I took my wheelchair accessible van in for service. My vehicle had less than 50,000 miles on it so I knew the problem would be minor. Hookset refused to look for a low cost solution and immediately diagnosed a high labor 'fix'. After completing this $700 ‘fix’ the problem still existed. Did I get s refund for their misdiagnoses? Heck no. So, I asked them to look for the low cost solution. Did they? No! They went for diagnoses #2 -- a $2,400+ ‘fix’. Every other Dodge mechanic I called said there is no way my vehicle had the problem Hookset said it did. I would not let them do the work they recommended so they retaliated. They first said my engine was put together and ready to drive. But, after I said I was picking it up suddenly “another 3 or 4 hrs of labor were needed to put it together”. So, on top of charging me for a ‘fix’ that wasn’t a fix at all, they bilked me for another 3-4 hours of labor when I refused to let them do another $2,400+ worth of work on it. So, I took my van to a reputable place. What was needed? A tune-up. That’s right. A tune-up. This dealership looked at the chain Hookset replaced for $700 and said it wasn’t bad. They also said the values that Hookset wanted to charge me $2,400+ to ‘fix’ were not bad. With the tune-up, my van runs great. AVOID THIS PLACE. They will suggest high cost ‘fixes’ to overcharge for their services. They will also retaliate if you refuse to let them spend all they want. They are either incompetent or crooked. Based on the extra labor they charged my opinion is that they are crooked. A final note. Read the ‘positive’ reviews of Hookset. Do those seem legit to you or do they look like an owner or employee wrote them? Those look like self-reviews to me.

Honest and hardworking – I've been to Hookset a few times and have only positive things to say. As a single lady, I'm always super duper wary of being talked down to or taken advantage of when it comes to car care. But here I know they're being straight with me. Do I expect them to be 100% perfect every single time? Well, no probably not since they're humans not robots. But I'm confident that they're being honest with me and I'm also confident that they'll stand by their work and make it right if something were to go awry (which it hasn't for me). To me, having been straight up lied to and swindled in the past at other shops, that's huge.

Are the digs fancy? No. If you want slick waiting lounges and lattes and sky lights this is not the place for you. But there are comfy chairs, wi-fi, a nice TV and even some sweet and well-behaved dogs behind the counter you can say hi to if you want to.

All in all, I'm happy and will continue going back for sure.

Trustworthy and Reasonable – The first time I went to Hookset was because I had a coupon for an oil change there. I liked the people and the service I received there so much, that I've been going to them for over three years now for all my car repairs. It is a relatively small shop, and the quality of service reflects that. I know the owner and mechanics by name now, and they know mine.

As a woman, it has been difficult to find a shop where I don't feel like I am being talked down to or treated like an idiot and told that I need repairs that are unnecessary. I found the respect that I was looking for in this shop - they've never tried to recommend services I din't need, and they take the time to explain the problems and what my options are. The times that I've had more than one issue at a time, they have helped to prioritize the repairs so that I can take care of them in the order that makes sense safety-wise and financially for me.

The owner, JC, is a straight shooter. If there is a service that the shop doesn't specialize in, they refer me to someone who does. I have had all types of services on my car- from oil changes to getting a new clutch. Atlthough they seem steadily busy, I am always scheduled shortly after I call, I always get my car back when they say I'm going to get it back, and I'm always charged a reasonable price for whatever the service, and if they make a mistake they acknowlege and correct it without charge, which is a rare quality in mechanics.

I have recommended this shop to my friends and family and would recommend it to anyone out there looking for a reliable and reasonabley priced mechanic.

Very Dissapointed – A few weeks ago I called Hookset auto have a car looked at due to the engine had vibration, possible bad motor mount and it needed to have the brakes replaced. The car was dropped off the day before and Hookset Auto had it all day to work on it. I was told when I picked up the car that it was still running a little rough and that they believed that the computer was adjusting to the new timing belt. I was told that the old belt was longer than the new one and it was probably the original belt and had stretched. I was told to run the car for a week and see if it improved, if not bring it back.

I called and said that the car was still not running right and that it needed to be looked at. They said fine and I brought the car in to be looked at. The car was in all day and they said that they found nothing really wrong with it. They said the timing was good and that the O2 sensors were a little slow and that maybe the injectors were clogged and that the spark plugs were not the best for the car and that with this combo of events this was causing the rough idle issues. They said to change the spark plugs and try some octane boost and see how it works and that he didn’t want to start to do other services because they felt they were expensive for her problem and that the car was fine to drive as is and it would not do any damage. I said OK please do an oil change and change the spark plugs.

The car still had the same problem with running rough and a bad / low idle, so the next week I put the car into a Ford Dealer in Beaverton and they said to drop it off and that they would look at it.

I reported the car had a rough Idle and that it had been previously worked on at another shop and that the timing belt was just changed and that the other shop (Hookset Auto) said that the timing was fine. Ford called me early on that next day and told me that the car had a bad motor mount and that was causing the issue with the shaking. I said OK to that but said that the idle was still an issue. He told me the tech did not report that but would pass it on and have a look. The tech then took it for a longer drive and noticed the issue and after looking at sensors and what not found the timing off by 1 tooth. I told the Ford Dealer to fix the car since it was at the shop and needed the car back.

I then called Hookset Auto and spoke to JC and told him that the car was at the Ford Dealer and that they found the timing was off. He told me to bring it to him and that he would fix it for free. I told him that the car is in the shop now getting worked on and that I needed the car back and working, I couldn't afford to have the car in the shop for another day and that I already brought it back to you to look at it and fix it and that you said the timing was fine after you did the fix and when I brought it back to be looked at. He said he was busy and said he would call me back. Later that afternoon I called back and he told me he was working with the parts distributor and insurance of some sort to see if he could get me some money back and that he would call me. It made no sense to me but I said OK. I then worked all week and did not have time to deal with this. The next week I drove to Hookset auto to talk to JC and I was told that he was not in and that he had the day off. I said OK and asked to leave a message that JC call me back in regards to this issue. I received no call back. The next day I called Hookset Auto again and spoke to JC and said that hey we still have a problem about the bill and asked what he planned to do about it. He told me he tried to get money back from the parts people and that there was nothing he could do for me and that “I did the work I need to get paid”. I said thank you at this point and he said “Sorry I can’t do anything for you”. End of conversation.

I'm not bringing my car back there again...

Great all the time – WOW Is all I can say. I have finaly found a place in portland that I can trust to work on my car. These two are great. One is named Adam and the other I think is JC. You are always greeted with a smile by one of them and there dog. They have the WII and a big screen to watch and play so the kids stay happy. There prices are way lower then who I was bring my car to. They don't even charge me diagnostic charges for some reason? Anyways you should see these guys at work fast, friendly and always on top of there game.

I told them I would tell everyone about them and I am going to. Never take your car anywhere else.
