My favorite Thai Restaurant in Portland. – I have been to My Thai Bistro several times and every time I have been very impressed with the food and the service. The servers/hosts are always very friendly, the drinks are delicious, the ambience is soothing and the food is beautifully presented, very fresh and full of flavor.
Very sweet place with good solid food – I was starving and was wandering Hawthorne and stumbled onto this place. I was greeted right away and given a good seat. I always order Pad Thai in a new Thai restaurant, it is the defining Thai meal for me. Their pad Thai was excellent and fresh tasting. My food was brought quickly and was delicious. I also enjoyed their Thai ice tea, it was made with coconut milk and very delish! Great service as well.
Horrible Undercooked Food – I was there for just chicken pad thai and my chicken was nearly raw! NEVER GOING BACK. The service was slow, the staff rude and I felt as though my time was worthless to these people.
Why is this classified as French? – My friends have been raving about this place for quite some time, so I figured what they hey why not check it out. I even read the reviews no here first and kind of knew of what might happen. Well unfortunately my friends being college students obviously liked this place because there idea of gourmet food is burgerville. The food was served lukewarm, my chicken was undercooked and I also got the excuse the previous guy had about there excuse of being "Short staffed". Not too mention the crying child in the backroom was terrible. I will NEVER go back.
Terrible inconsistent Service – So my times at My Thai have been varying. The first few times I went on a Tuesday and it was incredibly slow in the restaurant, but service was great and the food was okay. Nothing too memorable about it, but it was bad. However every time I have gone on a Friday or a Saturday the service has been terrible, and the food even worse. I once called in my reservation and still had to wait 45 minutes to be seated, it took another half hour to get my appetizers and when my food arrived it was cold. When I spoke to the hostess about this she kept saying they were understaffed. They gave me the same excuse on four other occasions when the service was horrible. I am beginning to think this is just a standard line.
After my last few visits being absolutely horrid I will no longer be a returning customer. They have become just another dive on Hawthorne.
Parking was horrible, Night was a disastor. – It took me a good 45 minutes to find reasonable parking. This night was not starting off well. I ordered the Pad Thai, but absolutely no shellfish products could be on it. I told them this and they seemed to understand, however as soon as I bit into it my throat swelled up and I ended up using my epi pen. To top it off they offered to comp my meal for the evening but charged me for everything else. never going back
Worst service I have ever had, food was bland. – My experience the other night was absolutely horrible. The food was not as great as some of the other reviews may lead you to think. The pad thai was bland and lacking any originality, and the pad ruam mit was waaay overspiced. It seemed that i was lucky enough to experience both extremes that night.
The service was equally as bad. I had to wait an hour before my food came, and when it did arrive it came appetizers and all at once. The fact that the appetizers were cold led me to believe that the staff simply forgot about them. The only highlight of the night was the wine selection, but that was not nearly enough to save this terrible evening.
Awesome sweet and sour chicken – The food was INCREDIBLE! I ordered the sweet and sour chicken and it came pretty spicey at spice level 4, but was to die for.. Best I have ever had. The service was good, perhaps the building could use a little work on lowering light levels and make it more romantic, but overall very clean and nice. Would (and will) recommend this place to anyone and everyone. I will be back soon (can't wait). Truly a treasure for the Hawthorne district.
They have their own agenda – I used to frequent this restraunt on a weekley basis. It was my haunt every thursday or friday night. Its an an awsome location with lots to see. Both window shopping and people watching. However, latley something has changed. I dont know if it is because they had to raise their prices or a change in managment. but i just havent been impressed. For the price they want a plate. Which is kinda high for their location, i kinda expected better service. They dont know how to mix drinks either. One thing i will give them credit for is their food though. As it is VERY good! But if you are like me i also like to be treated like a person while eating there. And well they seem too occupied with other things. Like their daughter lisa who is always crying from the kitchen. Not romantic at all! Food service is average. It takes them about 30 mins to get any given meal out. If they are busy expect to wait 45 mins though. Over all i wont go back as i just get a bad vibe from this restruant. Almost like they are trying to hide something. That and i think the manager lady who seated us was skimping tips from the other employees. Everynow and then she would slip something into her pocket while working her way over to the till.
Went there on a double date see comments below for more info from the other party
Highly UNDERrated. – The food is absolutely amazing. The executive chef was born and raised in Thailand, growing up amidst the food culture that they had to offer, and has brought what I have tasted to be the closest to authentic Thai cuisine you can get on the west coast.
Now to get down to the actual critique:
The atmosphere gets an 8/10. It is an open inviting collection of Antiqued art pieces that I have been told were shipped in from Thailand. However the small place leaves a bit more room to be desired on a busy night.
Service gets an 8/10 as well. They are polite and prompt, however on crowded nights service slows down to a crawl, often forcing the hostess to assist in seating customers.
Quality of food gets a 10/10. This should be, without question, the standard to which all Thai restaurants in Portland live up to. Presentation gets a 9/10, as the food is definitely some of the most appetizing in appearance by far.
My personal recommendations after dining here multiple times; Order the catfish. By far the most amazing curry dish on the menu and its absolutely stunning to look at.
Also ensure that you make a reservation on Friday or Saturday as it does get crowded.
