Customer Service Sucks!!!!! – i went to africa kine a few weeks ago and it was a disaster. i will never, ever go there again. in fact, i urge anyone who may be even remotely interested in senegalese food, or african even, not to go there. i was with my fiance, and unlucky for me, i got him to try it. i should have known that there were going to be problems when after arriving, the host looked at us and instead of greeting us, walked away. when she returned 10 mins. later, she directed us to a table all the way in the back when there were plenty of other tables available. when my father requested the booth by the window, she didn't say anything, instead speaking in her native tongue to two other women. the table wasn't cleaned, and the hostess didn't explain anything to us. instead she begrudgingly assisted the other two women to clean the table. we sat down and instead of a waiter immediately coming over, we had to wait 10 mins. for yet another unenthused woman to come to our table. all we wanted was water, and it took 15 mins. for that. then she left again, and 10 mins. later, she came back to the table to tell us that everything we wanted was unavailable. i had to go through three different entrees until i arrived at something they did have. as we waited yet another 20 minutes for the food, i noticed our waitress waiting by a microwave. she was taking plates out and putting others in. pretty soon, i realized that plates were coming from a downstairs area and were being microwaved and brought out to the customers in place of fresh food. when my food came, it was cold and needed to be reheated. thus, it went back into the microwave. when it came out, it was terrible. the chicken was dry, the couscous bland and the fish smelled fishy. so we waited an hour for bad, unfresh food. i'm reading other reviews from this place and take it from me, an african-american, the staff here is rude period. the inefficiency of this place has nothing to do with ethnicity, it has to do with bad mgmt. DONT DO IT!

Senegal's best culinary ambassador – [their website has great african music BTW] okay this place ROCKS! incredible food. i'm a white chick from texas but i know this ethnic niche well because a close friend (and roommate) is from The Gambia so i was thrilled to see dishes me made at home actually on a menu for once! that was cool. maybe because i knew a little about what i was ordering the waitress was nicer to me and my group (i was there with a foodie group of 5 white gals who planned this via meetup dot com) than some other reviews i've read. it was SO SLOW so do not go here if you are in a rush. i am serious. you won't get in and out in an hour. just bank on spending at least 90 minutes. it's right off the subway stop so it's easy to reach but some in my party acted like this was new unchartered land (OMG!) because they'd never been so far uptown, and i did roll my eyes. but you get what you give and i was nice and enthusiastic so i got us great service. we were the only white people in there. everyone else was clearly from west africa. i think that speaks to their authenticity. the 5 of us ordered 3 dishes. the fish was to die for. YUM. the whole fish, eyes, head and everything. flaky, fresh fish with nice spices but not overdone. fish rested on coucous and the carrots were deliciously perfect. i got the chicken dish with plaintains. again, tons of food, huge portions, and deeee-licious. i almost licked my fingers. THAT GOOD. the other dish the table ordered was lamb and i can't stand lamb so no offense to this restaurant, but i didn't try it. but the entire table RAVED about the lamb dish. again the carrots are cooked perfectly. really delicious. then for drinks, i guess it's BYOB so our party ran to a nearby store and got a bottle of wine and they all drank it. i was the only 1 who declined because i got the ginger drink instead. again, PERFECT and delicious and refreshing. it was like ginger ale but FRESH and using real ginger. sweet, refreshing and not too interfering with my dinner. again, my server gave a great assistance in helping me choose a beverage. she also had a nice smile. she wasn't fast though, really this place is SO SLOW but honestly that's what i was wanting, so if you want an authentic, West African dinner in an easy to get to location, uptown away from the usual bustle with a laidback (some would phrase it SLOW) service, then go here. the food is FANTASTIC and unlike anything else i've had in the city. the only reason i put it 4 instead of 5 stars is that our party has to get wine elsewhere and bring it in. plus it is really slow. those 2 points are kinda downers for some but personally, i think of this place as 5 outta 5!

save yourselves! – i went to africa kine last saturday and it was a disaster. i will never, ever go there again. in fact, i urge anyone who may be even remotely interested in senegalese food, or african even, not to go there. i was with my parents, and unlucky for me, i got them to try it. i should have known that there were going to be problems when after arriving, the host looked at us and instead of greeting us, walked away. when she returned 10 mins. later, she directed us to a table all the way in the back when there were plenty of other tables available. when my father requested the booth by the window, she didn't say anything, instead speaking in her native tongue to two other women. the table wasn't cleaned, and the hostess didn't explain anything to us. instead she begrudgingly assisted the other two women to clean the table. we sat down and instead of a waiter immediately coming over, we had to wait 10 mins. for yet another unenthused woman to come to our table. all we wanted was water, and it took 15 mins. for that. then she left again, and 10 mins. later, she came back to the table to tell us that everything we wanted was unavailable. i had to go through three different entrees until i arrived at something they did have. as we waited yet another 20 minutes for the food, i noticed our waitress waiting by a microwave. she was taking plates out and putting others in. pretty soon, i realized that plates were coming from a downstairs area and were being microwaved and brought out to the customers in place of fresh food. when my food came, it was cold and needed to be reheated. thus, it went back into the microwave. when it came out, it was terrible. the chicken was dry, the couscous bland and the fish smelled fishy. so we waited an hour for bad, unfresh food. i'm reading other reviews from this place and take it from me, an african-american, the staff here is rude period. the inefficiency of this place has nothing to do with ethnicity, it has to do with bad mgmt. One of the worst restaurants I have ever been to – I went here on Saturday night with my girlfriend. The website looked great and I always enjoy trying new cuisines (I've never had Senegalese before). The entire experience turned out to be a disaster. The place was poorly lit and dirty. Many of the seats had tears in them and were uncomfortable. I've never had worse service in my life. It took the waitress twenty minutes to get to us and after we ordered we had to wait another 30 minutes for our appetizer and another 20 for our entrees. The waitress could not have seemed less interested in serving us. Our plates were never cleared from the table, our bread basket was never re-filled and we were never offered water. Half of the items on the menu weren't available. Our entrees weren't terrible, but they weren't very good either. I ordered a chicken dish, but was given some type of beef. The sole redeeming quality of the restaurant was the nem appetizer which was pretty good. Still, it wasn't so good as to make up for the rest of this disaster of a restaurant. As we were leaving, I wanted to go out to dinner somewhere else just so I could replace that experience in my mind with a more enjoyable restaurant - one that actually cared about customer satisfaction. I didn't think ethnicity had anything to do with the poor quality of the restaurant, but after reading some of the other comments on this board, it explains a lot. My girlfriend and I are both white and there were several other African couples around us who arrived after us, but were served their food first.

If you want good African food, check out Awash at 106 and Amsterdam. Its got great Ethiopian.

Horrible experience with prejudice – I went to Africa Kine for the second time (the first time was better) and it was terrible. The waitresses seemed to have an attitude serving my friend and I, even gave us the evil eye. We wanted a table that needed to be cleaned, there was mumbling and a sharp "you have to wait" as a response...which lasted for almost 10 minutes! We waited a while for our food but when my friend requested water to eat her food (spicy mind you) the waitress ignored her and walked off in a huff. So we decided to leave. I tried to explain to the waitress that she was rude to us from the beginning and only served the other customers who were from Senegal. I even asked her if it was because we were American that's why she was rude to us. Although she denied it, I find it hard to believe that in 15 minutes she served 4 customers from Senegal, leaving us waiting for water. We refused to pay since we barely touched our food. Instead of the waitress apologizing (which could've prevented this review) she takes out her cell phone to call her manager and ran out after us as we leave the restaurant. I got scared the way she ran after us, and threated to hurt my friend if she didn't pay. I never experienced this before. It took the cook and another gentleman to push her back inside as she cursed and said nasty things to us. I will NEVER go back to this restaurant, the staff is rude, prejudice (if you're not from Senegal), and unprofessional. Unless you want to be aggravated, don't go to this restaurant.

A bad experience with prejudice – I went to Africa Kine and the waitresses had a bad attitude when serving my friend and I. We wanted a clean table and there was some mumbling and attitude about cleaning the table we wanted. When we ordered, our order took a long time and when we requested something to drink, the waitress walked off ignoring us and assisting other guests. At the time, we were the only American people there and were ostracized since all the other patrons were from Senagal and were treated well. When we complained to the waitress, she cursed and almost started a fight with us, even chasing us out of the restaurant! It was a scary and terrible experience. It's a shame since I been there before and the food is good. This waitress and staff have lost customers simply because of rudeness, disrespect and prejudice. I DON'T recommend anyone to go to this restaurant unless you want bad service.

great food from Senegal – This is a great neighborhood place. The Mafe and whole fish are delicious and spicy. However, you have to go early (maybe for lunch?) because they run out of stews. Service is pretty slow, so be prepared to wait. They also have great take out.

Editorial Review – This little Senegal favorite serves traditional dishes in a roomy second-floor dining room.
