They hired very very pretty, 20 something muscle-boys who spend more time admiring each others faces and bodies then dealing with customers. They wanted to cater not to families but to other very pretty muscle boys and hot girls. Very often there would be more staff walking around then acutal people working out. This strategy will seriosuly back fire when LA fitness opens. Pretty boys and girls are FICKLE. Thye will flock to LA fittness and this gym will be closed with 2 years of LA Fitness opening. To bad too this could have been a great family gym.
Overall pretty good. Nice ambiance and friendly staff (I have no idea what that other people are talking about ... the front desk staff ALWAYS greet me when I walk in). I am from LA and don't like the "home depot" megagym concept myself. This is a comfortable smaller gym with newer equipment which is well maintained. I have to agree that the locker rooms are not in tiptop shape and are a bit small for peak hour rush and that the wiping down of the equipment could be improved upon. Overall I like the place and don't find it's price tag at all too much.
So much potential.... High price for limited space, machines, locker rooms, classes, etc.
A joke..... This gym tries to be modern, it makes the attempt to be modern, to give the "royal oak experiance" in a gym...it fails miserably. Small settings, dirty conditions, impolite employees, lack of equipment, the list could go on. For all those who live and exercise in royal oak, lets hope that LA gym is built and opened soon, and this abomination is demolished and replaced with more floor space for hollywood video. Dont waste your money, and more importantly, dont waste your time.
Completely Unsanitary.
I belong to the Detroit Athletic Club, where I admit I am used to being spoiled, but as a matter of practicality I can't always make it downtown to workout, so I joined World Gym. The gym is nice, and has a great ambiance, but it is completely unsanitary.
I have never seen an employee wiping down a machine; most members don't seem to either after they're done using a piece of equipment.
They seldom, if ever, have Clorox wipes available. Instead they expect you to use some TOXIC spray with a gym towel (the same towels--I mean washcloths--they provide you to use as a courtesy). Hence, any time you grab a "towel" to use to workout, there's a good chance it permanently reeks of toxic cleaner--great!
Having lived in Chicago and being used to pay $120+ for a gym membership, World Gym is way over priced at $50/month. At least for $120 you get showers, toiletries, real towels, and a clean workout environment.
