Very so-so--disappointing overall – We are locals, and we've eaten at many fine restaurants. We thought this would be another
Initially, they would not permit anyone to sit in the back dining area, and since we didn't want to sit on the patio, we were seated in an area that resembled a foyer, which connected the kitchen and dining areas. It was crowded and cramped, and servers kept squeezing through the small array of tables. It gave us the feeling that at any minute someone was going to drop something or bump the table. Later, one did drop a tray. In addition, two gentleman came into the already cramped area and began dry mopping the clean floor. Why they did this was a mystery. They spent a good five minutes dreamily swirling the mops and getting in the servers' way. It added to the oddly bare bones and
The food, which is key, however, didn't live up to the promise. The appetizer was excellent, but they served a small burnt bread in a wrapper, followed by pasta that was just oka and way over-priced. My pasta was supposed to have ricotta in it, but instead it was topped with a sweet cream-like substance. I'm assuming it was a version of ricotta, but the sweetness didn't go with the tomato and
Service was civil but scanty, and I was surprised to see paper place mats on the tables. We ordered the gelato, and it was very good, but again way overpriced.
Nothing had garnishes or flair or presentation, which some how you expect, when you're paying fairly high prices.
I was also surprised that gelato was the only offering for desert, since most Italian places offer pastries.
With the great eateries in town, we won't be going back.
Enoteca San Awful – Two words: RUBBER BAND. In the food. Which ain't cheap, by the way. The waiter and management tried to make it right and took the dish off the bill and threw in some dessert, but YUCK!
Good Italian Food – Four of us went because I am a fan of Mario Batali. The restaurant atmosphere was warm and inviting. We ordered the antipasti Prosciutto di Parma. The prosciutto rolls were warm and crispy with sprinkles of cheese. The pasta special we ordered was cooked to al dente. My friends, who are more of a fan of The Olive Garden, thought the pasta was undercooked so this restaurant is not a place for people not looking for authentic Italian. The dish was flavorful and I would imagine one can get a dish like this in Italy. We also ordered homemade gelato and biscotti. Although a bit overpriced, they were also excellent. Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and she did a good job recommending things to order.
What a horrible "treat" – My new fiance and myself had planned a beautiful evening to spend together and treat ourselves. We aren't from LV, so maybe this place is just a scam because is surely felt like the wool was pulled over our eyes. The food seemed like it came from 5 gallon buckets of military food left over from the Gulf War, the service was worse than a fast food joint, and we figured it would be a romantic setting with character but it was cold loud and not intimate. We had planned on spending some real money on the evening but our experience was completed in less than a half hour and we hardly ever saw any wait staff. I was freezing, btw I'm from MN so LV is balmy for me, so I ordered an overpriced americano to warm me up that I had to drown in sugar to choke down after it took as much time as the "meal" to come out. After all this, we were left kicking ourselves because we canceled reservations at another place to go here instead. If you want bad Italian food with poor service at a high price, this is your best bet.
Worst Experience Ever! – I would give this restaurant negative 5 stars if I could. It is just a complete rip-off. My husband & I were walking around the Venetian, looking for a pleasant place to eat... we decided on one restaurant but the wait was 45 minutes, so we walked over to San Marco & were seated immediately. You have to BUY bread, and if you don't, the waiter brings you a red bag of thin, awful breadsticks. The wine is so ridiculously priced, there is no point. They will give you 2 ounces for $5-25, and the best way to go would be an inexpensive bottle of Chardonnay for $35 - but I did NOT want to drink an entire bottle of wine! Moreover, we ordered two pasta dishes, priced (we thought) reasonably at about $16 - 20 a plate, but when the pasta arrived - it was boring, tasteless, & uninteresting - not to mention that the portion size was tiny & it tasted as if it were cooked in the microwave after being poured straight out of a can! The whole meal lasted us 20 minutes for a $45 bill. The next day we had a 2 hour gourmet champagne burnch at Le Village Buffet in Paris for $50 complete with seafood, crepes, and every dessert under the sun. Just give San Marco a skip! It's awful.
SALTY, SALTY Italian food – Being a huge fan of Mario Batali and his two LA restaurants Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza, we were so excited to try his new restaurant at the Venetian. The squash blossoms were bland and not seasoned, a big let down since the squash blossoms at Pizzeria Mozza are absolutely amazing. The fried prosciutto meatballs were decent. I ordered the bucatini with cured ham. The flavor was very good, but just incredibly waaaay too salty for 1 person to eat. and I am known to love my salt. The anchovy pizza was the same. All in all, the food was only subpar. Service was way too slow. Our lunch was 2 hrs long. I'd say to avoid and try all the other fabulous restaurants in vegas.
A Vegas Disaster – I am familiar with Batalli and his restaurants, and I knew going in that this was not supposed to be fine dining. The dress code of business casual is not enforced at all, but I expected a lively ambiance. We walked in after calling and asking if they were taking walk-ins. It was a nice table, we were pleased it was well out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the canal. Our server was prompt at getting our drinks going, then all hell broke loose.
The loud and pushy manager suggested that I let him order our appetizers because I was taking my time and considering pairings with wine. He made a suggestion that seemed reasonable, we ordered three cheeses and three meats and they were brought to the table promptly with the packaged breads and wine. We were enjoying our appetizers when the server reappeared and said, "we need to clear this table by 5:30, weren't you told that?" She then pressured us to get our entree orders in right away. I reluctantly but very angrily ordered and then the manager had the gall to reappear and ask about wines with our entrees! I told him that I was not in any mood since I had been told I had 20 more minutes at my table. He said loudly, "SIR, I rearranged some of our reservations, it is fine!" Note: He never apologized for the mistake, got loud with me when confronted with HIS mistake, then continued to try to up-sell the check by adding the wines! This idiot is relentless. I calmed down, ate my dinner, did order wine, and deserts and held the table for another hour and 20 minutes. However, the experience was marred by the cattle herd mentality, rude treatment and openly pushy "manager" who clearly doesn't care about the dining experience. All of this from an "Italian" restaurant.
This place was a disappointing joke. Chef Batalli, take your good name off of this trough. Tourists, locals, don't reward them with your business. Canaletto is right next door and we were treated very warmly there last time.
Sat at the bar and had a wonderful evening... – Having just gotten back from a few weeks in Tuscany, I was missing the food already. While waiting for my wife, I ordered a wonderful Rosso di Montalcino (a bargain) and waited. When she arrived, we settled on the Verdure Grande which was a variety of small plates of vegetables: Mixed Marinated Olives, Aspargus w/Pecornio, Lentils with Salami, Cauliflower Siciliana, Roasted Beets with Grated Horseradish, Peas with Priscutto, and a couple of others. We had no room for anything else after this and the bottle of wine. It was perfect. But we naturally had to find room for just a little more. We topped that off with their all natural fresh gelato (mine was made from fresh blackberries and fresh blueberries, my wife's was made from fresh cherries) and a little expresso. I will be back. It was wonderful.
Great Meal in Las Vegas – This is a relatively new restaurant owned by Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich (Lydia's Son). It's a wonderful restaurant in the Piazza with an "outdoor" section under the painted ceiling and lighting that makes it seem like endless daylight!
There were 8 of us and it was all wonderful.
Here's what we shared for Appetizers:
1. Verdure Grande: A Variety of small plates of vegetables: Mixed Marinated Olives; Brussels Sprouts w/Pecornio; Lentils with Salami; Cauliflower Siciliana; Bitter Broccoli w/Spicy Lemon Oil; Brilled Eggplant and Roasted Peppers; Roasted Beets w/Horseradish.
2. Vongole--better known as Mozzarella, Clam & Chili Pizza
3. Artichokes with Pressed Ricotta Salad
4. Mozzarella & Anchovy Fried Sandwich
All this with wonderful bread and bread sticks.
Next the main courses that we each tasted (except for our one vegetarian)
1. Pennette Alla Norma (tomato, eggplant, ricotta)
2. Bavette Cacio E Pepe (black pepper pasta w/ pecorino & olive oil)
3. (2 servings) Cavatappi with lamb ragu, pecorino
4. Crispy duck w/raisins and black Italian Kale
5. Marinated Chicken Paillard, with arugula, eggplant & ricotta
6. Veal & Ricotta Meatballs w/polenta and tomato
7. Braised Pork Shoulder w/apple reduction and cucumber
We shared two bottles of Joe's Rosso and one Bastianich Bianco. VERY reasonably priced! There wasn't a bad item on the table. Everyone enjoyed the food and wine immensely.
Service was wonderful perfect and friendly.
Delicious Italian Food... but I wish I could have had more – Mario Batali's 2nd restaurant in the Venetian is Enoteca San Marco. After dining at his NYC restaurant Babbo, I was curious to see what his food would be like inside of a Vegas mega-casino. The food was excellent. We ordered a 3 cheese sampler and a cold meat appetizer to start. The prociutto is just amazing. For an entree, I ordered regenete with sausage. I could taste the freshness in the ingredients with each bite. The pasta and pizza entrees won't really break the bank. The only items that were above $20 was anything that had veal or a big cut of meat in it. I'm not much of a wine drinker but Enoteca San Marco boasts a bottled wine list that is 3 pages! They also have a 1 page list of wines by the glass.
