It's almost impossible to find without specific instructions, but the effort is more than worthwhile to get into this one of a kind cocktail bar, whose strong and imaginative drinks fuel the sexy, romantic, secretive vibe here.
The Violet Hour is like Alice finding Wonderland: magical, mystical and extremely hard to find.
Skip it – We had a group of ten and were forced into the back room- where you cannot buy a single cocktail...you are forced to pay 90 bucks for bottle service. That would have been fine, only the bottle was a mixed cocktail with very little booze in it. The second one we ordered tasted horrible.
On the way out, a silly man wearing a hat who was also the doorman told one of the men in our party to take off his hat. When asked why, the doorman said there were no hats allowed. When we pointed out that he had a hat on, he said it was a fashion hat. Apparenly, you can wear a "fashion" hat but not a baseball hat. Its one thing to be a classy establishment- but this was not. It was a poser bar for fools. Im only sorry that we were fools for the night.
Best Kept Secret – Amazing atomosphere, great service and delicious one-of-a-kind drinks. The striking doorman will remind you to silence your cell phones as they are not allowed to be used once inside, which is great because you wouldn't be able to hear the background music and soft whispers that surround. I recommend the broiled duck meatballs as an appetizer, delicious. If you're looking for something with a little kick, the warmed wine in the Sanagree is fantastic.
The best cocktails in Chicago – An amazing place. Pure and simple. The Violet Hour crafts custom cocktails the way they should be made. A knowledable and caring staff speaks elloquently about these old school drinks. Try the Sazerac and the Southside. Incredible.
Locals with an appetite for stylish ambience and unfiltered cocktails flock to this Wicker Park saloon with classy substance. – Prohibition era abounds at this sexy gathering spot, from the non-descript warehouse exterior to the flowing gray curtain partitions that suggest hush and secret--a hidden bar. Modeled after the English club and French salon, high-backed chair and booths convey intimacy, while the mirrored back bars displays an admirable collection of fine liquors. Cocktails are complex, and made from scratch, the emphasis placed on fresh ingredients over mixes. Sipping a concoction called Three Dimes Down, made from Kentucky bourbon and Frutabomba bitters, Mavin Gaye playing sensually in the background, it's easy to forget it's a Monday night.
