We went to Macadams for lunch on 11/12, here is my review: bad food, bad service. The turkey noodle soup: The noodles tasted like they were straight out of a top ramen package, and the soup was barely warm. It was so chunky, my sister referred to it as, "dog food." The grilled cheese sandwhich: bread was dry and you could taste the burn marks from the grill, no butter or olive oil or anything was used to grill it. The cheese: dry (although the cheeses they chose to put in it are naturally on the dryer side), no flavor. Our friends were not impressed with their food either (breakfast burrito which was mainly egg), my husband said his burger was OK. Service: Our waitor didn't know what the soup of the day was, nor what the sandwich special for the 1/2 sandwich/soup/salad was. Instead of finding out for me, he stood there for a while explaining, "well, they just put the soup out, so I don't know what it is yet...I'm just not sure. The sandwich special changes every week, so I don't know what it is..." blah blah blah--as if he wasn't going to find out for me. I just stared at him until he said he'd go find out. (didn't mean to put him out.) Lastly, after paying our bill, we ended up sitting at the table for a good 30 mins longer as our conversation continued. Had they been full and people waiting, we would've been out of there, but this was not the case. When we did leave, a blonde waitress walked by us on the way out and said sarcastically, "And they leave..." I couldn't believe it. We will NEVER go back, nor would we ever recommend this place considering the vast variety of other [awesome] Portland bar and grill options.
BILLY JACK HAYNES??? – I've never been to this restaurant, but I am a die hard wrestling fan!!! Rumors are surfing the web saying local oregonian wrestling legend Billy Jack Haynes owns this restaurant!!! True??? Not True??? Can anyone elaborate??? My personal email is Christophergarcia082785@gmail I would really appreciate the truth on this rumor, thanks:-)
A favorite sports bar – I love coming to Macadam's when I am in town. The place has a friendly atmosphere and always serves up a great drink. It's a great place to see the game because there are many well placed TV's around the place. Also a good spot to play pool or shuffleboard.
I have also been there when they have live music and while it can be hard to hear conversations, that's pretty much standard when attending live events anywhere.
I've recommended the spot to several friends and they were all thankful afterward!
Watch out for the Grilled Cheese – Overall, I like this place, but I have been unhappy on a couple occasions with the food. Example: I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich this last time and it was, by far, the worst grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had. How it is possible to mess up such simple fare is hard to believe, but they managed nonetheless. First off, the cheeses used were all fairly tasteless, the bread was thick and grilled dry and the warm melty goodness of a grilled cheese was completely absent. If they had buttered the bread and toasted it, it might have helped. If they had chosen some type of cheese that melts and had flavor, like cheddar or American, it might have helped. If they had added some salt to give what was there some flavor at all it might have helped. As it was, it was awful and I left feeling like I'd just eaten half of the Sunday Oregonian instead of a sandwich. I'll go there again, but I won't be ordering any more grilled cheese sandwiches that's for sure. The fries were good though.
Best Onion Rings Ever! – Just went to Macadam's Bar and Grill for the second time. First visit was good - near closing and just stopped in for a couple drinks. Good service, and awesome mac and cheese (especially when expecting typical bar food). This visit I had the opportunity to listen to some live music and enjoy the shuffleboard (my first time playing on a regulation length table in Portland!). My significant other asked me to grab a burger for him before heading home, so I chose the Dagwood with onion rings on the side. When I got home and he bit in he was in heaven! I tried an onion ring and just about died! I usually hesitate on onion rings because I can't stand the soggy mess of frozen, but these are delicious and very fresh. Huge crunchy onions with an exterior crisped to perfection! For a place that doesn't brag about the food, they are really good. I plan to go back and try a steak dinner next time!
great burger – Great place to watch a game, get a burger and a couple of cold ones. The service is excellent and the shuffleboard kicks ass.
Quality food - great place to kick back and watch a game! – This place is great - probably the best sports bar around. I've been coming here for about a year, whether to meet with co-workers, clients, friends or to cheer on the Ducks I've had nothing but great memories and good times there. The food during lunch is great and their happy hour rocks. I haven't had a chance to have dinner there yet. Their menu specials is constantly changing, and their soup is made from scratch. I've been eating there for about a year for lunch and I'm yet to be tired of it.
go for the game - and nothing else – It's your fuctioning alcoholic co-worker that only talks about sports.
Sports bar plain and simple. The what's what of food straight off of the Sysco semi-truck. Happy hour is decent cause you're sucking down drinks not noticing how bad the food is. Atmosphere is a gazillion plasma screens each with a different sports game playing at full volume. Menu is way way overpriced due to zero quality foodwise. If you eat at Burger King on a regular basis, then and only then will you be impressed by the menu.
Unless you're sitting at the bar, the service is mediocre at best. At the actual bar - they are spot on. If you sit at a table and don't like the food, the service is trained to pout and whine until the customer gives up, instead of taking care of the problem. Twice this has happened to me, each time with a different group of people. The first time the pouting happened when our server asked how the food was, and I said "it's fine." The server said "only fine?" then pouted at the table until I gave up and said "it's just fine." She walked away, not to return until I had to go up to the bar to ask for another round for the table. The last time I ate here (& the reason for this negative review) the server actually said to my friend "but it will hurt the cook's feelings if you don't like it and I have to send it back." Direct quote about a salad entree drowning in dressing with undercooked chicken.
If there is a huge game i.e. Super Bowl, World Series, World Cup etc, go for the atmosphere of semi-rowdy sports fans, cheap non-local beer, and heart attack appitizers. Otherwise stay away.
As a restaurant owner, I try hard not to take negative reviews personally, but it is sometimes hard to separate the two. I obviously cannot speak intelligently about the service you have received because I was not personally involved with the situations, I can say, however, that the statement about "food straight off of the Sysco semi-truck" is false. With the exception of our French fries and two salad dressings, everything on our menu is created in house with ingredients delivered by Sysco and our six other food purveyors.
My husband and I wanted to open a restaurant with, among other things, some of your classic "bar fare" that was made from scratch NOT from truck to fryer. If you do not enjoy bar fare, I would recommend trying one of our more involved dishes under the House Specialties section of our menu. I would not describe our menu as elegant gourmet by any means; it is simple, fresh and flavorful SW American Cuisine.
Centrally Located - Great Place to Meet! – Macadam's has become a favorite place to meet friends since it's centrally located with lots of free parking and easy access to freeways. It also has a great atmosphere, not too loud, excellent TV's, nice bar, just a great casual place with outstanding food!
