Good comfort food and an awesome (though small) craft beer selection. Get the Ziggy Snacks, herby/spicy shortbread cookies, so addicting!
Simple, healthy, and delicious – My girlfriend and I just ate at Ziggy's for the first time, and either we are really lucky or all of the other reviewers are terribly unlucky, because it was some of the best "health food" that I've had in Houston. I use quotes because in my extensive experience trying to find vegetarian-friendly restaurants, "health food" generally means "tastes like dirt", but Ziggy's is definitely an exception. The entrees are simple - basically what I cook for myself when I have the time - but are done well and served in a cozy relaxing atmosphere. Our server(s) were very personable and attentive. Everything was pretty much exactly what I hoped for - this is definitely on my list of best places to get a healthy bite in Houston, alongside Hobbit Cafe and Bluefish House.
Underwhelming health food – In the last few months I have been to Ziggy's 3 times and each time was underwhelming to say the least. The first time, my girlfriend being a vegetarian, ordered the vegetarian meatloaf. As she was eating it she commented that it tasted just like meat and she was impressed how accurately they had emulated the taste. The explanation for this was simple - they had actually served her the regular meatloaf. Talk about an unpleasant surprise for someone that has not eaten meat for 8+ years. To me as a non-vegetarian it's not a big deal, but for someone who does it out of conviction or religious reasons it is a huge deal. In all fairness to Ziggy's they apologized profusely and even comped us the meal.
The second time, I ordered the Grilled Salmon and my GF the Sunday special Tofu stir-fry. The salmon was ok, but then again all grilled things are. The stir-fry sounded better on paper than in real life - essentially it was burnt - my GF loves tofu in all shapes and forms but this was inedible. For an extra $1.50 we added the acorn squash thinking it was something special, it wasn't. The dish was just a bland acorn squash with a few nuts thrown on it as an afterthought.
The third visit was merely out of convenience as it is within walking distance from where we live. I had the chickpea burger which was tasteless my GF's nephew had a pizza which was drowning in gooey cheese that turned into a congealed mess while he was eating it.
There is a green restaurant in the area that serves healthy dishes that are tasty and cheap. So it is possible - however, Ziggy's has failed to accomplish this. While their menu sounds good in print - the dishes consistently fail to deliver, they are boring and tasteless. I really wanted to like Ziggy's as it is within walking distance from my home - but I would rather drive the 10 minutes to the other green restaurant and have some awesome fare.
pretttttttty baaaaad!! – When we told the server that all the food we ordered seemed either stale or overcooked, he simply stated "well that's because it's healthy food". Talk about LOL! I cook nothing but healthy food using the same ingredients/methods that Ziggy's uses (whole wheat everything, ground turkey, lowfat cheeses, baked vs fried, etc etc) and my food does not come out tasting "stale" and "overcooked". Also, I'm not sure who deemed over-salted and over-boiled Velveeta as healthy eating (this was what they used for the queso)...My dining experience here was one I will never forget (although I wish I could!!!). If you still REALLY want to try this place out...just please don't order anything with ground turkey or wheat "chips" or "queso". I guess their mac/cheese was decent although, again, not sure it was healthy even though it was made with WW pasta.
Poor service, poor food – I have to say that I REALLY wanted to like Ziggy's Healthy Grill. I had heard many positive things about Ziggy's before from friends and coworkers. Unfortunately, my first and only experience left a LOT to be desired.
I dined at Ziggy's with a friend for a late dinner (still 50 minutes before closing time). There were only two or three other tables that were being served while we were there. I finished my water very quickly (within the first 5 minutes of my arrival) and the water was never refilled despite the server coming back to the table repeatedly throughout the evening.
We ordered the wheat chips/queso and many of the wheat chips were completely stale. Yes, I know that they are supposed to have a different texture than other chips, but there were clearly some "normal" ones and then a whole lot of stale chips. The queso had ground turkey in it, but that was also poorly presented as the turkey chunks were way too large to be eaten without cutting it with a knife. Some of the turkey "chunks" were almost as big as a meatball.
We also ordered two of the pizzas. We specifically ordered the pesto chicken pizza. When they came out, the server put down the "pesto chicken pizza" minus the pesto. He said that the pizza had been made with marinara and then asked us if we'd like the pesto on the side....He didn't offer to take it back and have it re-made and seemed unapologetic for the error. Of course we'd want pesto if that's what we ordered!!! The other pizza (spicy turkey) was completely dry and inedible.
I will say that the server did comp us for the dry, turkey pizza and was nice about it. I don't know if the poor quality of food and service was due to the fact that they were closing in an hour or if this is the way they always serve their customers. Even with the comped pizza, it was still a very bad experience and I doubt I'll be back.
Food/Service FAIL – This is the second time we have ordered carry out at Ziggys. The first time we had an issue with getting the wrong order, but no big deal, mistakes happen.
This time I ordered a burger with CHEDDAR cheese and my fiance ordered a stuffed avocado salad. When I arrived and paid I checked my burger in the car(from our last experience) and saw a large lump of feta cheese on it. I took it back inside and politely said that the burger was suppose to have cheddar cheese on it rather than feta. The gentleman inside looked at me and told me that I was simply wrong. He told me he was sure I ordered feta cheese on my burger(which I have never even heard of before). I told him I was sure I remembered saying cheddar on the phone at which point he smirked at me and told me he never confuses feta and cheddar cheeses... what? He took it in back and very loudly yells at the chef that I "changed my mind" and wanted cheddar all of a sudden. Not to mention once they corrected the cheese mishap, when I got home and started eating, my fiance's avocado salad did NOT have any avocado in it... which seems odd.
There were absolutely ZERO customers in there when all of this took place at close to 7pm which makes me believe I am the last to figure out how poor the service is there. The attitude is simply what put it over the top. Mistakes are made, granted. However do not presume to know what I said when I politely correct a mistake.
Easy to see why the other Ziggy's closed down.
Delicious & Great Price – We LOVE LOVE LOVE ziggy's! We'd eat their every day if we could.
It's a really good deal depending on what you order (we LOVE the half meatloaf entree order with a salad and sweet potato fries). The burgers are good...the fries are good... the veggie loaf is GOOD! Love the Greek Salad. And the Butternut Squash Soup.
They had a different Greek Dressing that was DELICIOUS! But I guess they were cutting costs, and started making it in-house. Their first few batches were AWFUL, but now it's really good.
The soups are served randomly, which is too bad. Love the Butternut squash and the Buffalo Chili...but who knows what days they are served??
The items are USUALLY consistent when we come in to eat...but occasionally, some things are different. For example, the Turkey Sausage at brunch has changed a couple times. The Chicken Pecan salad sandwich filling has changed a few times. The black beans have changed a couple times. Maybe their chefs turn over a lot??
Eclectic mix of servers. Some are better than others (I'd list the good ones if I could remember their names...) but they're generally super friendly. (We've had a couple that have been quite oblivious).
good vegetarian options – If you're looking for a place to have a nice leisurely lunch this is it. Pretty quiet and quaint. Nice options for vegetarians. I will return.
TERRIBLE SERVICE!! – Normally I LOVE this place for a quick Saturday lunch. Recently Ziggy's on W.Alabama went from a counter top ordering to servers which is fine by me, however, this was the most horrible service I have had and will not be going back to that location. The server we had was disgustingly horrible, big attitude and got into it with another server, nachos (seriously, nachos) took 20 minutes to get out and while we're waiting for our food, the server with attitude doesn't 1. tell us the nachos will take 20 minutes 2. come by the table to explain the delay 3. apologize until, of course we ask for the check (yes, we had to track her down first to get the darm thing)
So disappointing. Please Ziggy's, fix this.
Good neighborhood cafe/sandwich shop – Nice neighborhood eating spot in Montrose. On the edge of Montrose, it is endangered of getting customers from Midtown that don't quite get the difference between fine dining and eating in your neighborhood. Good sandwiches, burgers are still my favorite item here. Sweet potato fries are a must with the burger; salads are a healthy yet still tasty option.
Might have been a bad day – Well, we were going to the main Ziggy's, but directions got us here, I guess this is the same owners, satellite location. I'll give you the good stuff first. The food was pretty decent (and healthy), nothing really remarkable. The location was pretty cute. Also, the place is not expensive.
Now for the bad: I ordered wine and the glass had remnants of lipstick all over it! I know sometimes dishwashers don't get that stuff, but the dishwasher and the waiter should have both caught that before it got to me. My wife got a side of spinach with her lentil loaf, and it didn't come with the food. I ordered spinach quesadillas and did not receive all the sides the menu mentioned, salsa, pico, guac. So we had to ask to be brought all the food we ordered. The salsa and pico came in contact lens-size containers. The quesadillas were pretty uninspired, but then this place doesn't advertise as a Mexican place. The lentil oaf was filling but bland. The side of mashed potatoes were instant.
I think this place can probably be pretty good if you don't get the waiter we got and is you don't expect much. One person in our group got a sandwich that looked really good.
We don't use instant potatoes - only real potatoes made from scratch. No butter or cream so not the traditional version since we try to stay on the healthy side of a typical Houston menu.
