Cozy Thai resto appeals to vegetarians, monks and rebels. – A sign outside this little pink house reads, "Welcome Spicy and Veggie," making it clear that there's room for spice lovers and vegetarians, too. A waving lucky cat, pictures of the king of Thailand and a dormant, not-in-use buffet steam table occupy the small waiting room for takeout. The dining room is tranquil and decorated with traditional Thai artifacts and flowers. Monks in orange robes and musicians in black sunglasses are likely to rub elbows as they quietly enjoy coconut curries. Be it larb or crispy fried tofu with peanut sauce, monks or rockers, the restaurant's cuisine is a great unifier in South Austin.
Best Thai in town? – Not sure about that. Haven't tried everything yet. But, I'd say it's probably the best fried appetizers I've had. The texture of their fried food has always been very crispy. That's a big plus for me. If you like fried cheese, try their Butterfly appetizer. It is crispy on the outside with cream cheese on the inside and served with a sweet sauce on the side. I know it doesn't sound like much, but, they put some other yummy stuff in there too. The egg rolls are also good. They also have Thai Jerky as a dish. I thought that was an interesting choice and something I had not seen before. The location and atmosphere are not trendy. It's more like a mom and pop restaurant. Don't let that throw you off. They put the effort into the food.
Four and a half stars for Subsin's!
Best Thai Food!! – This is the best Thai food in Austin. Very friendly owner and staff. Wonderful cook! Try the "chips and salsa" - made from fried wonton and dipped in the sweet and sour sauce. Very large selection of vegetarian options. Try the Pud Mou Mou - a spicy, wide, flat noodle dish. Delicious Tom Kah soup. Great mango and sticky rice for dessert. YUM!
It's never crowded and has great service. Highly recommend this place.
