One of Brooklyn's best bookstores, indie spot WORD's small basement hosts author readings, humorous talks by OED editors and networking events for writers. The food, fiction and children's sections are small but well-curated. Don't hesitate to ask -- the smart, young staff will always offer great recommendations. And join the Frequent Reader program for book discounts.
Citysearch Editorial Review – Word is like Meg Ryan’s Upper West Side shop in "You've Got Mail"--a charming, independent bookstore trying to survive in a world overrun by Goliath chain stores. By patronizing this Greenpoint shop, then, you don't just get to browse shelves of literature in a clean, bright setting; you get to take a stand against the Man. In addition to books, there's a wide selection of fine stationery and gifts like puzzles. A bright orange wall in back marks the children's section. Although the prices at Word may not be as deeply discounted as at its chain store competitors, its neighborhood charm--and the satisfaction that comes along with supporting a local business--compensates for the minimal lack of savings.
